I think the person who really wanted to see this show most was George Takei, to be honest ...
Takei's performance in "Flashback" was horribly bad, and his performance in TUC wasn't much better. Frankly he doesn't have the acting chops to be the lead in a series like that. I think the show would have been a disaster.
Which is a shame, because I would have LOVED a Trek series set in the TOS movie era. It's absolutely my favorite era of Trek in terms of design, and had a lot of potential for storytelling in the time bridging TOS and TNG. But I just can't see a Sulu series working out.
I really liked the idea of an Excelsior/Enterprise-B series. It would be an interesting time frame to base a series, what with the new alliance.
Also I love the Excelsior-Class as a ship, she kinda deserved her own series I thought.

What if STAR TREK:EXCELSIOR cast a new actor as Captain Sulu? What actor would you suggest to play Captain Sulu?

What's the point? Why attach yourself to the baggage of a previous character? If your not going to use George Takei, just create a new character.

JJ Abrams recast Star Trek TOS characters, including Sulu.

But if this is a Prime universe series... you're essentially stuck with Sulu's twenty plus year career as helmsman of the Enterprise as the characters background. A new character allows you to flesh out that background in a way that serves the story.

I just think same character history in the prime universe set after UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, with Captain Sulu(cast a new actor) of the Excelsior.

I'm confused here: So if it's set after TUC, then why would you need a new actor to play Sulu? Why wouldn't Takei be able to do it?
(Not that I'm endorsing a Sulu/Exclesior series here. Honestly I think that's a bad idea.)

A discussion of recasting the actor. Some think since UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY and VOY Flashback episode were years ago, so they might have to recast Captain Sulu with a younger actor.
"Flashback" was filmed 14 years ago. I remember seeing Takei at Shatner's roast just a few years ago, and he looked just fine. Why couldn't you just have the new Excelsior series take place 14 years later? And why am I even arguing about this, when I think it's a bad idea?![]()
The only other Excelsior class starship 23rd century series could have been Captain Harriman of the 1701-B.

Why? I don't understand this compulsion to put minor character in the center of the action. Plus, I'm absolutely sure that Starfleet will build more than two Excelsior class starships.
If your set on placing it on the Excelsior, you can always just say that Sulu retired.
