Autosocks!

nacelle

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Does anyone have or ever use these?:
http://www.autosock.co.uk/
They are like socks for tyres instead of chains
I only found out about them when i was researching chains. They look awesome for not getting stuck in the snow.
I swore after getting trapped down my stupid lane for 2 days last year and the year before because of heavy snow i wasn't going to let it happen again this year! Nobody will clear the lane or the roads around the village and the stupid lazy council won't even clear the roads to my village.
Last year someone died because the ambulance couldn't get through because they won't clear the roads.
The thing is though the main road outside the village was drivable, not completely clear but you could drive on it. But what is the point in having a clear road outside the village if no one can get to it because the roads in the village aren't clear?
I had a good laugh at my neighbours trying to drive up the lane though. I was watching from my window as they went forward about 1 foot then slid back about 10 feet:guffaw:
Then another idiot was trying to do the same about 5 minutes later. Eventually some people came out with shovels and got them moving.
Meanwhile another idiot was trying to get out of his parking space but certainly wasn't going anywhere as all that was happening was that his wheels where spinning:rommie:
I wish i had known about the autosocks last year. I would have been able to get out then. I did google them to death and have read nothing but good reviews from people who have actually used them.

I don't know. If you've got maybe a couple blocks to drive in the snow, it may be practical, or as an emergency thing if you live in an area where snow is very rare. But using those things instead of winter tires as the ad says on top of the page, is absolutely insane imo. And chains are easy enough to install anyway, so I'm not really seeing the necessesity to replace a product that works perfectly fine with something that looks extremely unreliable to me.

I've used 'em on a -99 Skoda Pickup. It was slightly better than without. And as stated above, this is for an emergency. If you get stuck in the snow somewhere.

FYI: Chains are far better. They've been using 'em at work for years now.

Why not just get a set of winter tires if you're that worried about snow? They make all the difference in the world.

I'm disappointed that this thread is not about futuristic socks that roll on and off your feet automatically. :( One of them will inevitably get lost in the au-to-wash.

I haven't used those autosocks, just chains for driving up in the mountains.

Autosocks! :borg:

Deceptisocks!

Transformersocks: Dark Of The Clothes Hamper.

I am poor. :(

Maybe I can raise funds with the Misc. faithful here. ;)

I am poor too.:( More than poor actually.
They are only 50 quid compared with god knows how much for winter tyres, probably hundreds. I also don't have the room to store a set of tyres. They are not worth it for the two or so days of snow we get here. If anyone bothered to clear the lane i wouldn't have a problem.
Snow chains will take too long to fit and will take longer than the autosocks to take off once i get to clear road which is only a few hundred yards. Chains are also a good 20 quid more than the autosocks. I am on a very tight budget. I am also part disabled with back problems and need something quick and easy. The cold also affects my health badly and i can't kneel down fiddling with chains for half an hour or so.
If they were illegal then they wouldn't be selling them in the UK.

The reason chains are often illegal is that they can damage the road surface. But if there's a layer of snow or ice on the road that doesn't/shouldn't matter.

I've got Spikes-Spiders http://spikes-spiders.com/

You attach a hub to each of your drive wheels at the start of the snowy season... it just clips onto the lug nuts... and then when there's snow the claws just snap onto the hub in seconds. They're brilliant. One recent winter Jeeps and 4x4s were sliding off the road... the fire trucks that came to rescue them were sliding off the road... and I was breezing by it all... in my Prius.

They do cost a packet, though.

Never seen those before, but yes, I would imagine they are illegal here. You're not allowed to put anything on your tires.
Interesting. Where I live, chains are mandatory past a certain altitude when there's snow. You don't leave them on when you're not in the snow, of course.

As for cables, I found them nearly useless. They're why I took the step of shelling out for the Spikes-Spiders.
