Why isn't Tron out on DVD?

Does anyone know if there is a way to watch the film between now and when the sequel comes out? Maybe it's available, but I don't want to buy it and it's not worth just watching once. I just want to watch the film before Legacy comes out and hopefully that happens some how, be on Netflix, On Demand, or on Cable somewhere.

I just checked the iTunes Store...they don't have it for sale *or* rent.

It seems like Netflix has it in their database. And the deluxe edition DVD is available on eBay for $36.

If anyone wants to see the original Tron, it's on Youtube. I just saw it.

I think I understand what Disney's worries are, but man, as a child of the 80's/90's I don't care about what the graphics look like. I loved this movie, and the creativity, and the graphics. Nice to see Boxlietner in something other than Babylon 5, and now I can really look forward to seeing Tron Legacy.

So Glad I just did that. And the end song is by Journey. Fantastic. ;)

Edit:

Was Power Rangers based on Tron? I ask because the only thing I found corny about this movie (Even by my standards which are small) was the end scene with the MCP. Let's just say the one thing the MCP reminded me of was Zordon from the original Power Rangers. Either that, or something I saw in South Park (Or some other animated series), but PR was the first thing I thought of.

They took some ideas from Tron, but it's mostly just put the Japanese show through a shredder, glued the remains back together, added American actors and slapped a new label on the whole thing.

It's not a very impressive relase for me with crummy menus and special features.

What!?! :wtf:

Dude...the special features are fantastic! It shows all the animation work Lispberger did in his career leading up to Tron, and has an extensive making of documentary that is like 2 hours long, with old and new (at the time) interviews. It's a great set.

There may have been better features in there than what I watched. I only kept the disc for one night and glanced at some of the features. I may have just glossed over the "good stuff" but, really, special features don't do much for me.

Blink and you'll miss him, but Peter Jurasik was in there too. ;)

So why complain about them?

He was the compound interest program in the cell next to Tron. I think the character was called Crom or something similar. He might have been the one in the ring game with Flynn but I'm not certain.

South Park did a take of the MCP. Think it was from a very early ep where Kyle goes to Jewbilee Camp.

How is the transfer on the existing DVD? Disney can be a bit inconsistent about that. I'm still waiting for a non-shitty version of The Rocketeer.

I'm not sure I buy Disney's logic that seeing TRON will decrease audiences for TRON LEGACY, but if one subscribes to that line of thinking, holding the re-release of the original is a smart move.

If Disney thinks that about Tron, then they probably shouldn't have, you know, MADE A FUCKING SEQUEL TO IT!!!!!

I bought my copy of the 20th anniversary edition in an HMV about a year ago, so it's not that rare. Unless you live in the boondocks I'd recommend calling around to local shops - both new-release and shops selling PV copies - before starting to pay collector prices for this. Same goes for other Disney "vault" releases, which don't magically vanish regardless what Disney says (though to the best of my knowledge the so-called "vault" policy ONLY applies to Disney animated films. As far as I'm aware, for example, the Mary Poppins DVD never disappeared, except for a new edition coming out a year or so ago).

It mostly seems to apply to their classic animated films. It's still pretty easy to find some of their newer CGI releases like Meet the Robinsons & Monsters Inc. Then there's their live action films that seem to be in fairly continuous release, like Hocus Pocus, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, & The Mighty Ducks.

I was going crazy looking at all the used stores to find a copy of The Little Mermaid for my sister. All I could find was the DTV sequels. But somehow I lucked out. An ex-coworker of mine happened to remember seeing a copy just come in at the store where he worked, sold to them in brand new, unopened condition. I think I ended up paying less than $8 for it.

I seem to recall that, in the months prior to Salvation, there was a distinct lack of Terminator DVDs out on the shelves -- and I looked, too. Though I don't think it was to the extent that we see for TRON, I do think the film studios are deliberately withholding reissues prior to new flicks. Why? Who the heck knows.

There wasn't a really big push to rerelease or re-market the Terminator films last year but they were around quite a bit. In particular, I saw tons of copies of the new bare-bones single-sided release of The Terminator with the holographic cover. (Yet another in 20th Century Fox's long line of endless rereleases where all they do is reduce the bonus features & mildly tweak the packaging.) Meanwhile, when Terminator 3 first came out in theaters, Artisan made sure to cash in on it with a new Extreme Edition of Terminator 2.
