Trekless :(

I think I'm experiencing something that a lot of you have been through before... I've finally finished watching all the episodes of all the 'trek series'.

TNG was on TV still when I was a kid and I remember watching it a lot though it was in it its final days when I started to pay attention to it and I saw about 3/4 of the series in reruns. Recently a bout of nostalgia caused me to seek out the entire TNG series and watch the episodes in order from beginning to end. This took me a couple of months and I was really pretty sad at the end. I just wanted there to be more and more... you really fall in love with these characters after a while. The movies were ok but I don't think it's any secret that only the first two TNG flicks were any good.

In an attempt to fill the void that I had created in my daily routine without having any TNG to watch, I then started on DS9 and watched ll of them in order over a period of a few months as well. I remember this being on TV when I was a kid too, and I had seen about half of them. I once again fell under the show's trance and wished there was more to watch.

Once again I found myself missing having a Trek episode playing in the background while I was on the computer, on my phone plugged in to my aux input in the car on the way to work, etc. I found Voyager, which I had never seen before, and watched the whole series over about two months. Yet again I grew attached to the characters and didn't want it to be over.

Finally, I found Enterprise and watched the entire series. This series I got through in about a week and a half. I really enjoyed this one quite a bit and felt as though it still had several years of life left in it. I couldn't believe it only lasted four seasons.

The recent Star Trek reboot flick was good and that held be over for a bit but now I'm stuck... Trekless... with this unyielding addiction to the franchise that just cropped up out of nowhere after never having really paid any attention to it. I don't really watch TV at all and now I'm left with this sense of really missing having a new Trek to watch every night when I go to bed, etc. Are there any hidden Trek gems I've missed that might keep me going for a little bit longer? Any other shows that might be worth looking into? Anybody got any ideas to recover from acute Treklessness?

Thanks!

How about a TOS marathon? That's three seasons. You also got six movies to go along with it. TAS? I think that's a season.

Go to the source, the original, the best - STAR TREK. When you're finished, watch again - you will never tire of this truly amazing, incredible show.

The original series seems to be conspicuously missing from your playlist. Not to mention the previous ten movies.

I'm going to echo several others here: Watch Star Trek, the original and best. You could easily follow that up with Star Trek: The Animated Series and the first six movies. There's no reason not to watch Star Trek and every reason to do so. The only modern Trek that really feels like a worthy successor is Deep Space Nine.

Try renting "Galaxy Quest." Then there's all the Saturday Night Live parodies. The pilot (only the pilot) of Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda.

Also the pilot/movie The Questor Tapes from 1974, you'll see a lot of Commander Data there.

:)

I agree with everybody who mentioned TOS, TAS, the movies, and the novels. There are several novel series with original characters and settings, such as VANGUARD, about a Starbase at the time of TOS, and NEW FRONITER about the missions of the USS EXCALIBUR currently concurrently in the DS9/VOYAGER era, and the Starfleet Corps of Engineers (known commonly as the S.C.E.), also running concurrently with DS9/VOYAGER. I'm a little behind on that one, but from what I remember, it has Scotty running the S.C.E.

Fan films are good too, at least the ones I've seen. Of Gods and Men is recommended. I've only seen three episodes of Jim Cawley's Phase II, but they were quite good.

Anybody got any ideas to recover from acute Treklessness?

Thanks!

I found that meeting up with Trek-minded friends and getting involved in Trekish and fannish activities really helped me. For us there was a TOS film coming out every couple of years, but really it was the friends I made that kept Trek alive.

TAS has at least 6 great stories that would be worth your while. ST Phase II has improved over the years.

RAMA

There's still books, fanfiction, all kinds of stuff.

It's actually much easier these days to get your Trek fix with all of the shows and movies, plus of course with Trek all over the internet

Imagine the poor fans of the '70s and '80s, first with nothing but rerurns of seventy-nine episodes and a handful of cartoons, then a new movie coming out only once every two or three years. They had it rough.

We Trek fans got spoiled in the nineties. Two TV series, a film series just getting started..

Watch Star Trek: Of Gods and Men. It's like an epilogue to TOS, starring Nichelle Nicols, Walter Koenig and Alan Ruck.

Read the Star Trek novels. Watch Babylon 5.

The "Star Trek New Voyages" or "Phase II" is really decent fan fiction. Definitely give those a run. All are downloadable for free from links off of the main website.

Listener4 also recommended Babylon 5 and I agree too. Great series, epic in nature. Sad how it fizzled out, though. There were a few episodes released after it had officially ended and the direction/acting in them was terrible.

It sounds like you'd gotten yourself into a rather intense watching session with Enterprise. You got through it in only a week and a half? Ummm... with that kind of pace, no wonder why you're high and dry. ;) If anything you can start again, but this time slow the pace. Start with TOS. Watch an episode a week. Don't even skip the "lesser" ones. They each have their own merit. And then you've got TNG again... 7 seasons. That'll take you a good long while. :)

Also, forgot to mention... as far as sci-fi shows go, definitely give Fringe a watch. There's already 2 seasons down. It keeps getting better. This 3rd season is really intense. You can watch previous episodes on-line or download them via torrent servers.

The novels, particularly over the past decade or so, are of considerably high quality (at least, for the most part) and are worthy of checking out. You can continue the stories of the crew after each series wrapped.

However, maybe taking a break from all things Trek and moving on to something entirely different would be good for you. There are plenty of other amazing things out there to immerse yourself in.

If you haven't already definitely give the original a try. But seeing how far you have already come with Trek and how much you like it I would be amazed if you hadn't by now. Outside of that TAS is something worth trying. But don't have too high expectations the episodes are short, badly animated and some of the story lines are a bit boring.

With regard to the fan productions. Stay away from them if you prefer to live without a cringe induced seizure condition. I have seen a few and the mere thought of them still gives me the heebie-jeebies. The acting, writing and directing of these so called shows is the most embarassing and laughable thing you will ever get to see. I know I'm being harsh here but unfortunately outside of production value (sets, props, costumes, effects, musical score) these are merely basement role playing sessions that somehow found their way onto camera. If at least they would approach it with a bit of humour, but they don't they take it dead seriously. By far the worst one is where they try to play act the original show, I believe it calls itself Phase II.
