Just going to chime in and say that the absolute worst thing about the amazing Rebuild movies is the disgusting lack of Asuka :(

They have to throw in the new girl somewhere. :p

I would just like to thank you peeps for bringing up Evangelion. I've had the dvds sitting on my shelf for the last 2 years and completely forgot about it. Time to finally watch!

Apparently you will either find it a revelatory experience like 2001: A Space Odyssey or you'll hate it.

Umm....you're welcome I guess.

Started watching The World God Only Know. This seems like it will be a fun fluff show good for some laughs.

Yeah, I'm not sure about the obvious nerd/otaku shows this year. That and OreImo seem... I dunno, almost designed to appeal to a very specific aspect of otaku desire. But that's probably thinking about it too much.

SoreMachi, Arakawax2 and Squid Girl are great though, so the comedies are hitting their stride. Just waiting for the second noitinimA show to start up at this point.

Also, Rei vs Asuka, go! (Misato is the correct answer).
Indeed it is. Given the choices, it wouldn't be the soulless doll with no personality or the abrasive violent girl, it would be the sexy cradle robbing cougar. Though that's just me.

Pretty much, the viewership on both is similarly fractured. People seem to either like it or hate it, I'm in the middle I guess since I just found it mediocre. Speaking of 2001, I can't stand that one either, it was good up until the psychedelic stoner light show though. I don't know, I guess I don't appreciate abstract concepts without some type of explanation. I am a really big fan of psychological, philosophical or moral-bending works though. For instance I love Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Monster, Kara no Kyoukai, Death Note, Elfen Lied, Welcome to the NHK, Perfect Blue, Paprika, Koi Kaze and others. They some of my favorite works. NGE just doesn't hit the mark for me though.

You should watch Ghost Hound, I like similar shows and love Ghost Hound.

Ghost Hound does rock, not to mention it's very informative on the subject of psychology. :techman:

The studio execs are actively pandering to hardcore otaku. One of them admits it here.

....which is smart in a way since they're the only ones who'd be willing to buy their overpriced DVDs and BD. The Japanese equivalent of a marketing scheme for anime is to only put 1-2 episodes on a disc and sell it for $60-70. Whereas you can buy a whole series for that here. :wtf:

Imagine all the wasted space on a blu-ray disc that only has 2 anime eps on it. That still gets me how they do that over there. I know sometimes they usually have an extra OAV or something on there but that is still a ton of wasted space. We are spoiled when it comes to getting full or half anime series at a time but it comes at the expense of having to have a series fully released over in Japan so they dont reverse import.

It's just funny because I think one of the pictures they use in the header is from PreCure, which is as far from otaku pandering as you can get. I can understand pandering to nerds - I think the girl from Chuck has been filmed half-naked like a dozen times already, so it's not even limited by culture - but it just seems like there are a lot of shows *about* nerds this season... and not only about nerds, but about nerds creating relationships in very specific and unrealistic situations. Like the first season of The Big Bang Theory, now that I think about it.

The bit about outsourcing to China is funny though, especially considering the Banksy Simpson's intro the other day. I guess the big fear is that without the "grunt work" positions, there won't be any room for Japanese creators to grow and make it to the director positions. But really, that just might mean a change in paradigm more than anything else.

Bandai is doing the 4/5 episodes per disc thing with K-On! over here.

It's designed to exploit the collector mentality as well. Very often the discs will come with some kind of poster or card or CD or something physical that appeals to collectors.

People who don't care do reverse import though. There are sites that teach Japanese people how to navigate Amazon.com or RightStuf or whatever.

I think Bandai is doing that more because they're hurting financially than because they're trying to exploit collectors, but I suppose it ends up being one in the same. :(

There was some big anime news recently.

It looks like all of the major anime labels are getting together and have created Red Box like anime renting kiosks to be placed arround the states here. The venture was lead by Media Blasters and will be branded with their RareFlix logo. The tester is New York.

Back on topic for a moment, I'll just say that Squid Girl may be my favourite show of the season. It's really cute and funny.

Glad you recommended it. I was going to skip it, but you're right; it is rather charming. Not a giant faecal monster or vomitting person in sight. Well, there is the ink, I guess...

Anyone who wants a break from the endless stream of cutemoeblobmaidschoolgirlcatfoxearedgirls might want to check out Kuragehime. All the characters except one are decidely "plain", and the exception doesn't really count. Although it has to be said that the main character is only Hollywood Ugly and one removal of the glasses and a flick of the hair away from being cute; also they're all raging otakus, so it's not quite as fresh as it might have been, but still... something a bit different.

I really don't get the kiosk format. Yeah, the overhead is lower than having a store I guess, but no one is renting movies and TV shows these days are they?

I guess it's appealing to a niche and it seems cheap, so maybe they can do this for the people who can't stream or are too lazy to steal.

I think Kuragehime is where I'm pinning my hopes in terms of the four big "shows about nerds" shows this season. I don't mind the others, but when you have deconstructions of the fanbase in shows like Genshiken or Welcome to the NHK, it's hard not to expect something with a bit of social commentary.

At least it shows a very different type of nerd girl. Yeah, there's still a BL author, but they're more normal like the Genshiken girls than like the girl from OreImo or the typical nerdy girl you find in shounen works.

I think I've seen almost everything this season and my shows to watch would be: Arakawa ^ 2, Soredemo Machi, Squid Girl, Kuragehime and Panty and Stocking.
Most of the other shows I'll probably keep up with casually just out of curiosity (MM!, the three other nerd shows and Star Driver aka Utena 2) or guilty pleasure (I'm still watching the dreadful Amagami SS, for example).

I think most people who want to rent use Netflix. The Red Box that's outside of where I work is also very busy though. As far as a physical renting store, they're a dieing breed. Everything that we had around here is gone except for one and they don't have any anime so if I want to rent that instead of an live action movie it's from Netflix now.

Up in Canada, the major rental chain is tied to the cable and cellphone company, so they just use their video stores as customer service centers for their other services.
It's funny because Blockbuster up here has started selling cellphones in their stores as well, so it seems like everyone is trying to figure out a way to make better use of the space.

I can see the appeal of a kiosk for a company, but I guess I don't see how it's any more likely to succeed - in the long term - than just a standard rental store.

Could really do with a Genshiken or NHK this season. There seems to be a lack of shows with substance in general lately. I enjoy the fluff but man does not live by moe alone... or something like that.

Must admit, I found the maid show unexpectedly hilarious. Kinda assumed it'd just be straight up cute clumsy maids but watched it on a whim and found instead that's more like satire.

Yep, I don't want to spoil Kuragehime for myself too much so I'm not reading much about it, but hopefully it goes in an interesting direction.

SoreMachi is unexpectedly fun. I mean, the description from the charts didn't really say anything but it's a Shaft show so, you sort of know what you are going to get. It feels like a much lower key Natsu no Arashi - especially since the star of SoreMachi was also a character in that.

Yeah, it was and tonally SoreMachi feels very much like it. It's not as playful, since it's based in some kind of reality that makes sense, but it still has its moments. :)

So the rundown is:

Bleach- Currently awesome
Hakuoki II- Pretty good sequel thus far
Iron Man- Interesting but assassinating Tony Stark's character
The Legend of Legendary Heroes- Still going, still good
Naruto Shippuden- Currently in flashback hell and sucking.
Psychic Detective Yakumo- Very interesting
Shiki- Still going and getting better
Sora no Otoshimono: Forte- Same old
Soredomo Machi wa Mawattieru- This is cute and quirky I like
Stardriver- So far it's just "okay"
To Aru Majutsu no Index II- Highly entertaining
Togainu no Chi- Might be dropping depending how much shounen Ai there is
The World God Only Knows- This is good for some laughs, not bad
