Classic SF...opinions....

Just so you know, folks, I am keeping track of suggestions made and some of them have been added to my list for consideration.

I have another one. Cyborg 2087. I'm not sure it's on DVD though. It stars Michael Rennie and Karen Steele (Eve from "Mudd's Women").

Silent Running's villain protagonist is the least of its worries. It still amazes me that something so dull could have inspired something so fun, in the form of MST3K.

I'd suggest

The Day The Earth Caught Fire (1961)

British film that envisages a scenario where nuclear testing goes wrong. Prescient allegory of humans mucking up their own world.

Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (1969)

Gerry Anderson movie that postulates that Earth has a twin world on the other side of its orbit, where everything is mirrored.

The Shape of Things To Come (1936)

British film that envisaged the future unfolding over 100 years, with a prescient, and dark vision of a WWII that last 30 years, and future society re-building a utopia therafter. Screenplay by H.G. Wells

Journey was good, (I couldn't remember the name) and I already suggested the Wells movie. IIRC, it had a lot of predictions about war and society that have either come true or been mirrored..

I never suggested Silent Running in my original post because it seemed obvious. Huey, Dewey and Louie predicted R2-D2 by a few years...

Do monster movies count? I really like the British monster movie Gorgo that came out in 1961. It is worth a view.

Speaking of British made films, another I recommend is 'The Day the Earth Caught Fire'...

Two words: Janet Munro...

(And Michael Caine is briefly seen as a traffic officer in one of his earliest roles)...

Destination: Moon (1950)
When Worlds Collide (1951)
Them (1954)
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea (1954)
Conquest Of Space (1955)
This Island Earth (1955)
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956)
The Time Machine (1960)
Silent Running (1972)

I've seen about half of those (probably more, but I can't clearly recall those others). Of them Silent Running is the best. One of a small handful of films I've cried at. And I'm not an emotional person, normally. No joke; get it.

The "protagonist" is a terrorist---a murderer. You really enjoyed this film? :wtf:

The Rebels in Star Wars were terrorists.

From a certain point of view....

;)

These are the films I'm focusing on for the moment:

When Worlds Collide
The Time Machine
Capricorn One
Silent Running
First Spaceship On Venus
Them!
Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers
Destination: Moon
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
(1956)
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978)
The Mummy (1933)
Dracula
The Wolf Man
The Bride Of Frankenstein
12 Monkeys
The Andromeda Strain
The Final Countdown
Marooned
The Right Stuff
Greystoke: The Legend Of Tarzan
Tarzan, The Ape Man
(1930's)
The Creature From The Black Lagoon
The Invisible Man
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

I love older sci-fi flicks. Many of the films already mentioned are great choices. If you like strange, schlocky, obscure stuff, then check out Moon Zero Two.

Just got notice from Amazon.ca that the following have been shipped and I should have them in a few of days:

Dracula
The Wolf Man (1941)
Them!
Silent Running

...and because SF isn't the only thing I watch:

The Sting
JAG Season 4

Next ones on order:

First Spaceship On Venus
Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956)
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978)
Greystoke: The Legend Of Tarzan
Destination: Moon
Run Silent, Run Deep
The Man Who Saved Christmas

Indeed.

Some, who had a bad feeling about that, thought because they were part of the Rebel Alliance, they were traitors...and had to be taken away!

Too many people with delusions of grandeur...

Today I received my order including Dracula, The Wolf Man, Them! and Silent Running. :techman:

And more stuff on the way.
