I have been thinking about buying some seasons of DS9, which ones?

Urge

I have seen season 1, found it a bit slow.

I am definitely not going to buy the whole thing.

Since I have heard that it gets dramatic towards the end, having the last seasons is perhaps good.

Im thinking about buying two seasons, or at least no more than three.

Will it work to see the last two or three? Will I understand the events taking place?

Starting with season 6 or 7 would be a really bad idea, both those seasons continue story arcs from the previous seasons. You could start with season 5, but it would be confusing and I would not recommend it.

It's a difficult thing to advise about because I'm strongly of the opinion that new viewers should start at the beginning and work their way to the end, not missing a single episode. Season 1 is slow and often dull, there's no denying that, but the show picks up a bit in season 2. It depends on what kinds of stories you liked in season 1; did you like episodes like Duet and In The Hands of the Prophets? Because season 2 follows up on many aspects of those plots, so if you didn't like those episodes then you might not like much of season 2 and you might be better off trying season 3 and 4 and seeing how you feel about them.

^^^ Yep.

If you absolutely had to, you could get by with just seasons 5 - 7, but you'd be missing quite a bit of the story arcs since most of them cover all seven seasons.

I would also recommend starting at the beginning. Seasons 1 and 3 are a bit shaky compared with the rest but it's still pretty damn good especially when compared to Star Trek in general. If you are desperate to save money or get to the famous parts of the series as fast as possible you could start with season 4. At that point the series introduced a new main cast member and the first episode can be seen as a second pilot setting off a whole new chain of plot lines which form the basis for the following seasons.

Yeah will just echo what everyone else said. Season 5 is my favourite. Theres stories there that pay off on stuff from the first series though. They wouldnt have the same impact.

I'd recommend 4 and 5. That's how long it took me to start finding the show consistently strong. Before then, I usually would like a bunch of episodes then dislike a few, but they got into a nice groove starting with season 4 and never really lost it, aside from the occasional stumble.

6 and 7 are good too, but their endings piss me off. I think 4 and 5 are the best seaons overall. They have my two favourite episodes "To the Death" and "Trials and Tribble-Ations" and in my opinion a better ratio of good to bad episodes than the others.

You gotta buy them all. That's all there is to it.

Yup, definitely. The last three seasons are all phenominal IMO, but so are seasons 3 and 4, and 2 was a big improvement over 1 since the show had really found its footing by then (not to mention Jadzia suddenly growing a personality).

DS9 isn't like TNG where you could get the last two seasons and not miss a ton; DS9 is pretty serialized at times, and even when it isn't, it still references a lot of things and makes use of older episode ideas.

Watching DS9 from start to finish is the only way to fly.

If you must start in the middle Season Four forward really is the place to go. Way of the Warrior is as close to a "second" pilot episode as you can get.

While some seasons may be better overall than others, there are good episodes in every season, so don't entirely neglect a season because a few people don't recommend it. And continuity is important as well, especially starting with season 3.

Get them all and watch from the beginning. I think you'd sell yourself short and miss out on quite a bit of backstory. Sure, there are some boring episodes that don't really add to the overall universe, but you'd still miss out on the character development and the like.
