That's what gives me pause. While Batman has the potential for a lot of different interpretations, I think Superman fills a specific heroic archetype. Routh was doing a riff on Christopher Reeve, which is about as perfect as you can get. To move much beyond that is to create something that isn't really Superman.
Oy - I don't think I will ever understand the Chris Reeve fetish. He was not the end-all, be-all of live action interpretations of Superman.

Ever read Birthright? It condenses the essentials of the origin down to one page, then follows Clark as he travels the world, working out his journalistic destiny. It then explores his first year at the Daily Planet in some detail and does a really nice wrap around with Jor-El and Lara. It's not a brilliant book, but it's a nice, solid look at Superman's early years.
