No Shatner in Next Film... (possible spoilers)

Just saw this article:

Shatner says he's "Too Old"

I find this rather shocking. The guy can play in countless television shows but won't appear in what made him famous? Maybe this might change, who knows, but this is kind of a bummer if it's true.

I just saw his new show on CBS tonight, I forget the name of it by it was pretty decent. It's been a long time since there has been any decent shows on television lately.

Maybe we need a petition to get Shatner back one last time... I was really hoping he'd be in it...

They don't need him for XII (or, if you like, Star Trek II). They would have to shoehorn him into it, if they did, and his story would basically be a retread of Nimoy's in XI.

As much as I would like to see Shatner give one last performance as James T. Kirk, I think that leaving him out is probably for the best.

He doesn't necessarily have to play James T. Kirk. He can play grandpa Tiberius! :)

Nah, I don't think that'll work. That'll be like a slap in the face to him... his role in Star Trek is only James T. Kirk, he could pass for an alien but I think his best bet is to play what he's known for.

Out with the old, in with the new. It's time for this nuFranchise to set the tone with its own nucharacters and stories.

Including Shatner in the next movie would be pointless. He's already had two curtain calls, in TUC and GENERATIONS. And Nimoy has already passed the torch onto the new cast.

Time to let the new Kirk and Spock have their moment in the sun.

Well maybe Denny Crane can defend Kirk instead of Samuel T. Cogley.

Or, S*#t Grampa Tiberius Says

Since JJTrek is so completely different than the series and movies that preceded it, the best idea would be to leave any of the actors and characterizations from them out of it.

While I've never felt the need to have Shatner shoehorned into the NuTrek franchise, this IS a chance of tone considering how badly the Shat was hoping to be in XI initially. I sincerely hope this isn't a hint at any health troubles.

While I can't argue with the logic of all these "it's better off without Shatner" statements, I can't help but think it would still be cool to have him come back if only for sentimental reasons. The simple fact is his appearance in "Generations" was a disappointing on screen exit for Shatner as that character. I'd only want to see him on screen again just so we can get a more dignified and reverent Shatner-as-Kirk curtain call.

I think it would be fun having him being the bad guy ... prime Kirk, coming out of the Nexus and trying to save his timeline ... or something like that. Of course, that wouldn't make him entirely bad ... but at least we could understand his motivation.

He already came out of the Nexus and died.

"William Shatner was a mediocre actor, who went on to play Captain of the Enterprise; but that was another lifetime." -Nero
