Is TOS really part of Trek Canon?

I tend to ignore TOS except for the basic backstories of the characters and their missions. Star Trek properly started with The Motion Picture and Wrath of Khan for me.

The simple straight answer is that everything in Trek is a variation based upon TOS, and TOS is the foundation of it. So if anything's "canon" TOS is.

None of which speaks to questions of consistency, internal contradictions or individual preference - those have squat to do with what's official continuity or "canon."

Then I sir must ignore you!

But not really. That is sad though.

Eh, why, just because I like the design and scope of the movies and everything that came after it much better? ;) I'm just following Roddenberry here. ;) Klingons always had ridges. And in my mind, Starfleet design always looked like in TMP and beyond. ;)

You will also find a lot of people who actually think the new movie is the best Trek ever, and that Pine-Kirk is much better than Shatner-Kirk. So be it.

The show is so old and out of date now that it seems like it would just be easier to leave it out.

Why confuse new fans with two different Captain Kirks or Klingons who don't like Klingons? Why not just erase the cheesy design of the original Enterprise?

With new Trek in place, can't we finally, thankfully drop TOS out of official canon?

HERETIC!!!! :klingon:

Start the Fire, this shall not go unpunished!!!

Sure I'm not the biggest fan of TOS and it's at the bottom of the list for me under Enterprise (in regards to interest).... but That was Gene Rod's baby.... it formed everything we take for granted in all the other star trek shows today.... to suddenly claim the "Bible" of Star Trek is no long cannon is just simply sacrilegious.

Gene shall haunt you in your sleep tonight for even posting such a thing..... and just in case.... I'll summon him right now

Yeah but I said I like the new movie too...so don't think you're being an iconoclast there.

=============================

Actually, I think that Kirk-Kirk is the best, but then I might be just a bit pre-disposed toward that opinion.

I dislike and completely disregard TOS... ...I mean, sorry, but it's just... ...cheap! It was a flop! Cancelled after only 3 seasons, it did worse than ENT. It only gained all the hype through the movies. TOS isn't really Trek, its far too non-idealistic (especially with chauvinistic, aggressive Captain Rambo Tiberius Kirk) and has as much science and logic in it as George W. Bush's brain.

That also carried into some of the movie. I mean, that ring shaped barrier at the galactic core - it's complete unrealistic and unscientific nonsense, especially because, if it would really exist, it should be in spherical form like the core itself. Oh, and what's up with a planet at the center of the Galaxy? Anyone ever heard of gravitational pull? Neutrino mass? No? Then don't write science fiction.

But TNG where weird old men and young teens warp spaceships across the universe with thought is okay? Or the episode where Bevery falls in love a ghost that's been haunting her family for generations?

I hear that Star Trek XII will involve time travel within the JJverse and we'll meet T'Pau as a young girl. The success of this movie will lead to a spin-off TV series that will be universally hailed by ALL as THE pinnacle of Trek. Everyone agrees that this is what Roddenberry had secretly always intended Star Trek to be, and all of Trek that came before will be considered old, obsolete, and violations of the new canon.

...Did I mention that Gary Seven's cat Isis will be Li'l T'Pau's pet? The series will premiere on the Disney Channel and will feature musical numbers....

I AM TURNING OVER IN MY GRAVE.

ORBIT. WHATEVER.

if anything's not canon, it's that fucking abomination of a movie from 2009.

Mall Cop??

Actually, Mall Cop was a more sucessful movie based on rate of return.

Mall Cop
$183,000,000 gross/26,000,000 budget = 7.04

Star Trek XI
$385,000,000 gross/150,000,000 budget = 2.57

XI made more total dollars but Mall Cop was a better investment. For the same $150 million you'd make 5.7 Mall Cops with a total gross of $1,055,000,000.

The better question, perhaps, would be whether the later shows are part of Trek canon. That TOS is part of canon, for me, goes without saying.

1. You've obviously never watched the show.

2. Star Trek was one of the more expensive shows to produce at the time it was made.

That is all.
