In honesty, how likely are we to see 24th century Trek again?

I think the think that gets me most was how much he was praising Shinzon when he had to be ojectively the worst villain Trek has ever seen.

Nobody is objectively the worst Trek villain. That's purely a subjective thing.

The fact that CM thought his idiotic need to destroy Earth was only a minor nitpick is astounding.

Idiotic need to destroy Earth? Sounds familiar...

Nero had the excuse of being a madman driven by rage and grief. We're expected to believe that Shinzon was a capable, intelligent commander equal to Picard and had a "logical" plan.

Nice try though.

He's driven by rage and grief towards Spock, the one person (well, two actually) that he doesn't kill. (And he's apparently "driven" to do nothing for 20 years.)
Now, we could certainly debate the relative merits of Nero's "excuse," but contrary to popular belief, that's not my main reason for living. The fact is, at the end of the day, big action movies are generally populated by Big Bads who just want to see the world burn.
I wasn't saying that to slam the new movie (the plot wasn't the part that bothered me), nor is my purpose to defend NEM (which I haven't even seen). I'm simply stating that in a big action movie, which NEM and STXI both were, the motivations of the villain is always a minor nitpick, or else most action movies would have to be deemed unwatchable (including most Trek movies). If the villain's plan does end up being logical, that's simply a bonus.

Think about it, honestly. You just made an excuse for the motivation of a villain in an action movie, because you liked it. There's nothing wrong with that; we do it all the time with movies that we like, and I, for one, would rather spend more quality time with the heroes of movies than spend way too long trying to cover all the bases of the villain's motives.

I don't see why a late 24th or early 25th century show couldn't be done. Costs for effects and film editing have dropped dramatically; even amateurs can make relatively slick films with off-the-shelf equipment. Why couldn't CBS let a bunch of obsessed fans make a show and let it run on a cable channel, such as ScyFy? They could allot a fairly modest budget, and if it's run by the right kind of devoted fans (who are plentiful and not interested in being well-compensated). It wouldn't make much money, but it would probably turn a profit and give immense satisfaction to die-hard fans. Now that TV has room for such niche shows, why not?

Problem with that is that CBS might be worried about their reputation if they give the franchise to a bunch of amateurs and it total bombs. If CBS backs some pros and the show doesn't catch on with the target audience, at least they give it their all. But a bunch of fans? They might end up looking like idiots.

Could a Star Trek show be done on the cheap? Of course it could. De-emphasize the FX and cast relative unknowns in the major parts. With the money you save hire superior writers who believe in the idea of Star Trek. What killed Enterprise wasn't the quality of the FX, taken in isolation they were pretty good. It was the writing as a major flaw.

They currently don't want to do anything that might possibly devalue their profitable "new" franchise. I'm sure Enterprise's poor performance is still fresh in everyone's minds at Paramount and CBS.

They wouldn't even release the four STXI follow-up novels for fear they might contradict something in the next movie and upset a couple of fans. They're not gonna risk anything as big as a TV show at the moment.

The story lines have either been distorted or contradicted both before Kirk and in the 24 the century and a little in the future.

Enterprise made changes in the story line, Nemesis made changes in the Romulan government, and the recent movie made further changes to the Romulans.

And with Enterprise not doing as well, it seems kind of hard to see how they could do another 24th century series- the Dominon war, voyager, etc.

IF, and that should be a really giant "if" there, someone wisely decided to do a new Trek series set in the same universe as TNG/DS9/VOY, set a bit more than a decade after the end of the Dominon War (which I do think would be an excellent idea), then I imagine many if not most of the regular actors from the earlier shows would be glad to do a guest spot or two.
I think there would be room to include every beloved character. Have Quark pass though, do an episode where Garak is the central guest, Picard as an old friend of the Captain, Riker and Troi as USS Titan finally found its way home. Do maybe 3 or 4 a season. Try for something better than Relics: make each episode a good episode even if you don't know the backstory of this Harry Kim dude.

The guys who currently hold the pursestrings have decided profit lies in another direction, but they might be replaced with someone wiser.

If anything, it's the hard core "true fans" who have a well earned reputation for some considerable difficulty with basic hygiene.

So true. Going to comic-con next week and not looking forward to the reekage. Granted it's not every fanboy but they really pack you in like sardines there.
