Still would have been funnier if he'd gone "Football, is that anything like cricket?"

Considering the Doctor used to WEAR a cricket outfit all the time, and keep a cricket ball in his pocket, you'd think he'd have mentioned cricket by name in this episode.

Imagine if the 11th Doctor did the equivalent of the 5th Doctor and wore a soccer jersey and cleats as his outfit...

The screwdriver gag was too goofy: the doctor has used ordinary tools (even screwdrivers) before. I find it improbable in the extreme that this incarnation has forgotten.

One 'the Doctor doesn't know how things work on Earth' gag would have been ok, but in retrospect this episode made use of that far too often, considering his previous incarnation was quite knowledgeable in pop culture and that the Doctor has lived extensively on Earth by now. It would have worked for the first two Doctors. And even without those gags, the Doctor would have been weird enough as a lodger, talking to cats and people that aren't there, talking in tech gibberish and building weird machines in his room. They could have toned it down a little.

Average. And that's probably a bit generous.

Who said he did? He used it as an excuse to involve himself in their conversation. In case you missed it, he was manipulating both of them into admitting their affection for each other, and to that he needed to get involved with them.

I realise, all too well, it's use in the story. Nevertheless, for the price of an unfunny gag, the doctor is made to look like an idiot.

"Excuse me, what year is it?"

"You don't know what year it is?"

"Look at me, I'm stupid! What year is it?" -- "The Long Game"

The Doctor has never been afraid to make himself look like an idiot if it serves his purposes.

That exchange is much more clever and effective though. And though it makes the doctor look silly to whichever chr he is talking to, there is never any doubt in the audiences mind as to why he says it - it doesn't make him appear stupid to the audience.

ETA - Mr Adventure beat me to it.

I took the screwdriver gag as just a fun little wink to the audience. I doubt the writer really expected us to think he was THAT thick.

"My dear, no one could be as stupid as he seems."

They didn't really use the 'don't know how things work' gag all THAT much did they? All that comes to mind are the screwdriver and a tube of hair gel.

O Muse! Sing in me, and through us tell the story
Of that man, skilled in all the ways of contending,
A wanderer, harried for years on end...

One of my favourite movies. :D
