The Worst Fan Film Award Goes To...

just watched the dark hope film, what exactly is so good about it? please fill me in. the trailer was ok, thats only because they must have actually hired a real trailer guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfZD3styRj4

could someone please tell me what the big dark twist really is, whats so darker about this then say the crappiest show of all, voyager.

Man, you really feel the need to trash other people's efforts don't you? Something to consider: you are not being charged for your patronage. People who ponied up at that theater and/or video store or paid to download a product have every right to trash a product that doesn't live up to expectations. (For a real hoot check out Roger Ebert's "Your Movie Sucks".

Put another way, these fan productions are very much in line with community theater productions where you might have a core group of professionals in key spots, but most of the other spots being held by volunteers with little or no experience. I doubt if you would walk in to a production of say, the Sound of Music, and then tell whoever put it on that they produced the worst version of that play in history. What you're doing here is just as insensitive and rude as that would be.

What you also don't grasp is that the people behind these productions are often extremely self-critical and open to suggestions of how to improve. That was certainly the case with Exeter and Phase II. While their early efforts held a lot of promise there were moments in both that I'm sure caused a lot of head shaking in both camps. I know that's certainly true in the case of the audio production I work in as well.

The best model I've come across for offering people guidance is "praise, correct, praise"...you're idea seems to be "trash, ridicule, belittle" If you would style yourself as a critic, perhaps you should remember this aphorism from the notebooks of Lazarus Long. A "critic" is a man who creates nothing and thereby feels qualified to judge the work of creative men. There is logic in this; he is unbiased — he hates all creative people equally.

People who put their product out in front of God and everybody are (or should be) aware that not everyone will like it and that not everyone will sugar coat their reaction. However, those who would consume a product for free, without coercion and then belittle the producers of that product, should consider what it says about themselves that they would be willing to trash someone else's efforts, which are not even meant for sale, but for sheer enjoyment at no charge. If you don't enjoy the product and you think you can see how it might be made better, by all means speak up. Such suggestions are always welcome in my experience. Telling somebody they have no talent and ridiculing them crosses a line into cowardly bullying.

deepspacearea51,

I agree with you and will back you, in that you have every right to express your opinion here. But as I have not seen the alleged bad fanfilm, I cannot comment on it. But I do back your right to express your opinion, and not be beaten down for it.

However, by the same token, TRP had a good point... why not while expressing your dislike, offer suggestions on how you would improve it, to make it better, in your view?

This is actually starting to bother me, which surprises even me. The technology we had in 1999 was laughable, is that an excuse? No, I was 15 years old. Do you think Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins looks fondly back on this moment? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRPvucIncPM. No, I'm sure he giggles. I had no idea others in the world were producing fan films, I considered mine to be the only one, that is until the invention of places like this.

Before you go tearing apart what I believe to be one of the best fan films ever made (and that's not because I made it), try and have some decency. It's obvious even in the trailer that the "dark twist" is about 'evolved' 24th century Starfleet humans losing their token perfect society. I wrote this story to elaborate further on what I believed to a big missed opportunity on Voyager, Equinox and Year of Hell. Am I a criminal for not making a completely original story? Hell no. I once spoke with Billy Corgan about musing other works. He had a lot of great insights on the matter. We all want to make an idea better, or continue on with what inspires us. The love of making these films, and telling the stories is what fan films are all about. I spent 4 years on Dark Hope, for this? This is exactly why there will never be another voyage of the starship Encarta.

phase II clearly is the only fan film that should be watched by anyone.

Ridiculous. What I've seen so far of "Phase II" is excellent, but there are many other fine contemporary fan films out there, not to mention many others from the 70s and 80s, made on Super 8 and VHS with no intention of ever being able to present them to a world audience. I have several of my own I'd love to share, but the participants - those I can track down - are reluctant to become Youtube megastars.

Which brings me to this point: the fun of fan films is in the creation of them. That you can then share them beyond your production team is cream, and a relatively new phenomenon. The ease of distribution changes the nature of what's being made, rather like the photocopier brought possibilities to the world of the fanzine.

You, deepspacearea51, certainly don't have to like fan films. But don't insult them, especially all those fan films you haven't see, but assume are all as bad as each other.

picard alpha: there was no dark twist, show me the dark twist. So your captain decides to maroon his crew? why is that dark? what is so dark about that? you shouldnt bill things in trailers that dont happen. your space battles were kinda cool, and your ship landing was ok, but its like it's been done before, why do it again? every star trek has a ship battle, why did you have to, is that supposed to be dark? come on dude... geez .... i watched the rest of this dark hope movie just to give all these people the benefit of my criticism, and i've gotta say that dude if your mission was to create an even crappier movie than nemesis than you succeeded. stuart braid and rick berman are probably looking for you right now wanting to hire you for their next project. i've gotta say that phase II clearly blows anything dark hope tried to do into pieces. I also watched another one called star crap intrepid. that guys movie is actually worse then yours, so the worst fan film award moves to star crap intrepid. but still encarta blows chunks compared to phase II, but i guess its light years ahead of intrepid.

This is not the expression of an opinion worthy of any respect whatever, but simply childish provocation for the sake of provocation. Enjoying yourself?

your certainly entitled to your opinion but this kind of childish BS really doesnt help anyone. criticism is one thing but this is simply annoying.

I liked Encarta. i haven't seen them all but dark hope was quite good. there was two things i found annoying. one was the sound. you have to keep raising an lowering in order to hear everything. and second the borrowed special effects from the series and movies. (landing, explosive decompression part) it would look way more professional if you rendered them too.

deepspacearea51: ^ see? this is how you criticize without offending someone...

And then let me rebuttal.

Your talking about 2 effects sequences amongst thousands, I'd like to see your ass try! I'll insert them into a directors edition when your done.

What audio problems are you talking about? I've never heard that one before...

Why does everyone have to pick on me!?!?! ;)

C'mon man, don't be like that. i'm not saying you did a poor job. i just pointed out what i though you should fix until next time. read my post again for Christ's sake. i was merely saying that there is no point of using clips when you can render it as well as you do.

and the sound part. i take that back. it was a bug in youtube. the downloaded version was fine.

I was poking back at you in a friendly manner silly...notice the *wink face*.

Of course I'm protective of my baby, even if it's been 2 years since it was released!

oh yeah, sorry about that then. it didnt show up as a smiley on my cell and i missed it. anyway when is the next one coming? there's gotta be something for them to do. even if dark hope came quite close to a finale.

This is bullshit!

I haven't even completed *casting* on "My Immortal: Vampire Secks ROCKS!111!!!"...so at least wait until you see that to judge worst fan film of all time!!!

Sheesh...some people...

ETA: BTW, I'm also currently casting for "My Imortal: Vampire Secks ROCKS!111!!!", so if you are a female between 16 and 19 and enjoy wearing dark clothes, dark makeup, cutting yourself and shopping at Hot Topic, please send an audition video to my Facebook address link...

Geez, I find it impossible to take deepspaceassbag seriously. Just a punk without the intellectual or artistic chops to express himself in an meaningful way. Seems fond of
the word "Crap" for some reason.
And Intrepid is extremely well written and acted. The low budget CG can be forgiven when you have that.

Excellent, another viewer added to the count...
