The Worst Fan Film Award Goes To...

I've been inspired the the Trek comic of Star Trek v Aliens I watched on Youtube to have a go at some stories set in an alternate universe around the time of TMP (assuming that Decker and Ilia were restored by V'Ger so I have an expanded cast). I chose TMP because I like the look of the tech and because there are enough hi-def screencaps of various crew from the Rec Deck scene that I should be able to populate a diverse supporting cast. So the pyjamas have to stay. The downside is that there was so little action in the movie that I think I'm going to struggle to dispaly action scenes.

I was thinking of merging the key races from B5, and Farscape plus the Magog from Andromeda for good measure. I still can't decide whether to just merge betazoids with deltans or revamp betazoids so that they annoy me less. Merging Psi-corps and Section 31 is also a possibility.

The upshot is that I could soon be in the running for a worst fan film award :) Fingers crossed!

I personally think that most franchises and sci fi universes have separate and different types of logic. Mixing them is a mistake. If you don't like them, make up your own. I have been thinking about a short story in my own sci fi future. It's more optimistic than most (not post world was destroyed) but less than Trek (no faster than light travel or transporters). But it has it's own logic. Trek has it's own logic. Babylon 5 has it's own logic. But the logics and assumptions are different. You increase the lack of plausibility when you mix them. Why do a fan fiction at all if you don't like their worlds? Make up your own, and own the copyright outright.

I think that generally the acting in Starship Intrepid is the best, most consistent of any of the fan film series.
. YES!

That's why it's hard for me to give a certain troll much credibility. That was the first observation I had about Intrepid.

Likewise. I've still not had a chance to view any of the Encarta episodes, but I'm quite familiar with all of Intrepid's outings, and would have to agree -- of all the fan films I've seen, theirs is the most natural, comfortable acting I've seen, and when you stop a moment to consider how much this one single element seems to matter to most viewers, it's a pretty nice feather in Nick and his colleague's hats.

So yeah, Dennis said it best in his initial post in this thread.

"Obvious troll is obvious."

Honestly, as someone who hasn't seen a lot of fan films, the trailer just looks like a well thought-out student or amateur film--not something you'd expect from a major studio on a big budget, but not even close to being awful.

When I watch something like this, my attitude tends to be a) I admire the effort, even when the execution doesn't go off flawlessly and b) this is way, way better than I could do. So my figurative hat is off to anyone making fan films.

If you folks are interested, I've reviewed the first two episodes of Encarta and will post a review of the third tomorrow.

You can find my thoughts on the first film, done in 1999, here: http://scifipulse.net/?p=23473

And you can see my review of “Destiny’s Advocate” here: http://scifipulse.net/?p=25555

Each story has a link to the Encarta website.

Be warned that I’ve liked Encarta since I found out about it and saw their fourth episode: ”Dark Hope,” which I’ll review in the next month or so.

Enjoy!

see, ya'll misunderstand. sorry for the confusion.

i simply think phase II is light-years ahead of this stuff. im just very vulgar. just saying i dont think encarta has what its takes against the phase II and i dont think intrepid has what it takes to place against encarta, see, and certainly not phase II. the acting in intrepid is just dreadful, while some of encartas talent was very bad atleast a few of them could read lines and jump around the crappy battle scenes, intrepid...well...they need some serious acting lessons. i am of course a true thespian actress and can figure these things out, you see.

Of course you're a thespian.

And of course, a real thespian would expect thespians to critique/receive criticism properly. It comes with the territory and the industry. Unfortunately, as many others have pointed out, you've been incapable of doing neither throughout this whole thread. So forgive us if we don't quite believe you.

Yep - still, if you are going to rape a franchise, you may as well do a few others at the same time. The Trek/Aliens crossover was so well done, now I just want Spock to mind meld with a vorlon.

Have you got a link?

Search under Star Trek Motion Comic on Youtube - it is quite impressive. Sadly my animation skills are too limited plus I don't have a lot of time. I think I will have to stick to basic stills with captions. I'm not even sure how cutting out character outlines and pasting them into new backgrounds will look I have no idea how to animate the individual items :wtf:

A suggestion for finding people interested in making a fan film in your area:
1) Formulate the idea a little more clearly. Then post looking for help and support on most of the Fan Film forums. Most people interested in making fan films watch them, too.

2) Even though Farragut isn't your era, you might want to help them behind the scenes so you can tell people you've worked on a successful fan film. It will also make clear the size of the task.

3) Work out a plan of action. Sadly, a check of my Fan Film Production Map does not find any DS9 era Fan Films being produced within, say, 500 miles of your location. TOTSF, which has not put anything out in years, is theoretically open to any era. It is a collection of all the ST Fan clubs in NJ. However, you still might want to take a peak at my Fan Film Production map and just see what is nearby.

I was briefly involved with them a couple of years ago, and currently support them financially, (switched from New Voyages to Farragut). Mike Bednar is a class act, and as long as he is involved, I'll continue to support them, even if I do my own fan film.:techman: TOS just isn't where my interest lies.

I'm involved with the local independent movie community (Deadlands I,II...Trenches, more...), plus just finished DPing a short subject, and will Direct another later this summer.

One of the problems I've ran into is the stigma that can surround Trek fan films. Many of the people I know in the local community will not have anything to do with Trek (actors, below the line people....).
But I also know if you do a fan movie really well, it can lead to bigger and better things. (Shane Felux who wrote and directed Star Wars Revelations and Pitching Lucas.. wrote and directed Trenches for Disney Stage 9 before it shut down). It's now available at crackle.com (part of Sony). Plus the places used in both Revelations and Trenches are very close to where I live....;).

As far as being close...I'm actually looking for an affordable warehouse to rent and turn in to a green screen stage, plus practicals. And nothing within 50 miles of where I live can be considered "affordable", so I don't mind going to another part of the country to shoot. Farragut is building a bridge set down in far South East Georgia, close to the FL state line. I"m hoping to find something a LITTLE BIT closer.

As for formulating a plan...I'm a producer/director/bottle washer/cook/camera operator/gaffer..., just not a very good writer. I thought I had found a great writer, but as so often happens, when it comes time to put in the sweat and time, they didn't pan out.

Another thing I'm adamant about is....paying people. Fan film or not, I strongly believe in people being compensated for their work, even if it's only 150.00 a day for the talent and that or less for the below the line people. So raising money is something I'm working on as we speak. But of course you are right, I need to put together a better, more visible plan of action.

The other reason for paying people, is usually, I can get better actors. I don't want to rely on the largess of someone who thinks they are doing me a huge favor just by showing up.
I would have no problem hiring people from other fan film series if they demonstrate the talent and commitment needed for the movie to get made.

To do the movie full justice would take at least a full year of pre production, including the script, CG, location scouting, equipment (will be shot at least 1920x1080p resolution), getting sponsors, auditions, legal advice for a Not for profit company....the list goes on and on...

Any ideas about how to spread the word are appreciated (even the obvious ones, like other sites, facebook...)

P.S. I'm familiar with TOTSF, but I thought they were defunct. New Jersey is only a few hours away from me by car, depending on what part they are in.
