What do women see in Star Trek?

I asked the wrong question. Let me just ask what do woman not like about Star Trek and I'm trying to mean women in general, ie those women and men who don't like it to begin with. I.e., why isn't fandom more prevalent?

Now I'm even more confused than I was by the original question. If you're asking about women in general, NOT fans, aren't you in the wrong place? We're fangirls here.

This?

No. This:

Actually, I love the stories and the characters and great special effects (or even mediocre ones if the story is strong enough).

Well, I'm a guy who is a bit of a hopeless romantic. But I actually liked most of the romantic drivel that has come about on Star Trek. Sure, some of it wasn't perfect. But I enjoyed it on some weird level (none the less).

And yes. I even liked the Chakotay and Seven mess, too.

Sorry dear ladies. I couldn't help butting in. Please feel free to whip out the claws and shred me into minced meat.

What a weird question.

No Denobulan wives for you!
I should've answered "Red, blue, and green luminescent phosphorous compounds that, when strobed in a certain pattern, produce recognizable images on the retina," but that probably would've been too smart-alecky.

As a gay man, I have also found myself condemned if I state that a guy is hot.
As a hetro man, I find I have a problem with that as well. Can I not acknowledge the shirt-less Shat in TOS as hot? Or the shirt-less Bruce Lee?
This culture is all kinds of repressed.

However, the shirt-ed Andrea in "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" really rocks my 'Verse!

(Hadda say that!):techman::guffaw:

I'm female.

I know what men like gadgets, concepts, stories, battles, but do women go for love interests, character interaction, strong women, and emotional investments and involvements, politics and moral and ethical dilemmas.

For me...All of ^^that^^ and fascinating characters like the female Romulan commander in TOS episode "The Enterprise Incident". In the 2nd, 3rd and 4th movies, Saavik. In some episodes of TNG, Sela...well Romulans, whether they're half-Romulan like Saavik and Sela or all Romulan like that unnamed female commander. Joined Trills also fascinate me. I would've loved to have learned as much as possible about one or two of Dax's previous hosts each season for the six seasons Jadzia was on DS9. I would've also loved to have learned more about Dax the symbiont before and after each joining, especially before and after the first joining with Lela. Also after being joined with Joran but before the memory block, which broke down in the DS9 season 3 episode Equilibrium, was put in place.
In Ezri's case I would've liked to learn more about the host, Ezri-(before joining with the symbiont Dax).

^[/QUOTE]You are right in that, more times than not, Trek gets the romance/love interest part wrong.

Dude. Harry Kim IS hot.

Once, I found myself being labeled as racist, merely because I do not approve of the Spock-Uhura make-out scenes in the new movie. My belief is that Spock 'makin' out' in elevators and transporter pads is neither professional, nor Vulcan-like.

I never thought about that but you are right. It IS unprofessional. But also HOT.

Oh Yeah. I've been watching VOY lately and I honestly think Janeway, get her out of that uniform, was unbelievably hot. But it's probably easier for a woman to say that about a woman because of said repression.

Shirtless Shat is all kinds of HOT..

Let's just make this the hotness thread.

Just one more question - Character oriented or plot driven? I should have just asked this to begin with.

You were kidding about C/7 right?

I aint a fan of the romance stuff generally. C/7 made me sick while Torres and Paris bored me. I rather fights with the borg. I'm also a fan of funny episodes like the mirror universe ones.

It is the main problem I have with ST09. Spock the Instructor secretly dating Uhura the Student would find himself terminated in the academic world. Spock the Acting Captain should be more concerned for the safety of his crew than making out in elevators, transporter pads, etc. Then again he was deserting his command and crew by going down to Vulcan.
It is very unprofessional for a human or Vulcan.:vulcan:

And could have been completely avoided by having him make out in his quarters.

^True dat.:techman: It would be much more believable had it been done that way, they could have maintained some form of professionalism.

TOS Kirk was always making out in his quarters. Also there might have been scope for even more making out than shown. Though we do still need to have the element of surprise the transporter pad scene provided.

I love a good story but I'm a social scientist and enjoy watching any character development. I don't just mean romantic development; the early years worker in me loves watching Worf with Alexander and muttering demeaning comments at Worf. ;) One of my favourite TNG episodes is "Family" because in this genre of episodes we can glimpse aspects of characters we wouldn't normally see. That being said, Commander Tucker not wearing much of anything is always a welcome treat.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s when there was a mass of Sci Fi programmes on Tv, so I got addicted to Star Trek from the start, as well as Dr Who, Babylon 5 etc.

For me and my brothers I guess it was the same thing, a story, explosions, techy stuff, etc.

Wow. I am interested in my personal reaction to the initial post. It really irritated me...and I have read far more outrageous and far less polite questions on this and other boards. I am a reasonably senior woman in my workplace, and the original poster has made me wonder what (some) men really think about women.

I apparently like Star Trek for the same reasons that the OP "knows" men like. I also like Star Trek for some of the reasons the OP postulated that women might like...except politics and strong women. I love current and historical politics but rarely enjoy fictional politics in any setting. I rarely am drawn to shows with disproportionately strong women (especially at the expense of ridiculously weak men)...I like shows with a balance of male & female characters. I do not "of course" like Star Trek just because of Picard & Janeway...although I like both of the characters just fine.

I love the idea of space and space exploration. I always wished I could have been an astronomer, but I am unfortunately not gifted with the requisite math or physics abilities...but Trek helped me dream as a little girl, TOS still has a high nostalgia component...and having first watched it on B&W TV, I never get over how colorful it is.

One of my early attractions of TNG was Levar Burton (because of my familiarity with his role in "Roots"), and was disappointed when they covered his beautiful eyes with the visor. I have always loved Deanna, and while I do not view her as a "strong" female...she is a feminine character who is successful in her chosen career path in Star Fleet. I am glad I was initially unaware of some fan's distaste for her character. I loved Guinan for her mystery. I am neutral about Crusher & Pulaski.

I continue to enjoy Trek because I am comfortable with the Trek universe and while I do not like all of the shows equally, I enjoy watching all of them on TV...and I look forward to new movies and hope for a new TV series at some point.

I don't know. It was all that chopping of those vegetables that got me all fired me up. Cooking can be very sensual art if done right.

What's a shipper?

A shipper is someone who would LOVE for a male character and a female character to become a couple. Like if you wanted 7 of 9 and Neelix to become a couple, you'd be a 7Neelix or Neelix7 shipper. Become a couple can mean start dating then make love then get married. Or it could mean start dating then get married then make love. I'm a Riker/Troi shipper. That's the only thing I like about the movie Nemesis, the fact that Riker and Troi got married and finally became a couple.

Not neccessarilly just Male and Female characters
Lots of shipper's like to imagine two male characters or two female characters as a couple

The couple you support don't neccessarilly have to have any canon support.
For instance, I'm a Garak/Bashir shipper... this does not mean that I had any thoughts that they'd end up together in canon, that's why I read fanfiction ^_^
