The Disney Vault

RoJoHen

Awesome

I don't know about you, but I hate the idea behind the Disney Vault. I've been on kind of a Disney kick lately, and I really want to start collecting the movies on Blu-Ray, but of course, most of them haven't been released yet and are locked up in the Disney Vault and can't be purchased. I don't understand why a company would willingly withhold their products from the general public.

My only guess, would be that they have decided that is the best way to make the most money.

Bingo. Disney played that game in the 1990's with some of their titles advertising "Limited Releases" before they were locked up again. I had to explain to my then-wife's son that it was a ploy for the company to make money. Like most young people, he said it was stupid, since in their world everything should be available if you have it. I explained to him that the strategy for the company is to release titles for a few months, then "lock them up" for upward of 15 years whereupon a new generation will eagerly swallow the bait.

Well, yeah, I get the money-making aspect of it, but from a customer standpoint it's annoying as hell. They could at least make them available through their website or something, even if they don't want to keep them in stores.

Mostly, I want to watch "Beauty and the Beast," and I'm annoyed that I can't.

^ I'm still disappointed I missed out on getting The Lion King on DVD before it got locked up in The Vault. Luckily I still have the VHS. And I did manage to get Aladdin, so that's cool.

I'm assuming that the Vault system does work for Disney because they have kept it since the VHS days. I do sympathize with those who have favorite movies that are out of print. However, some sleuthing on the secondary markets will usually pay off.

Amazon has Lion King for 18.40 now.

And for you, RoJo, they have Beauty and the Beast for 16.40.

Illegally download their movies.

There, you save money and Disney can go fuck themselves. It's a win win in my book.

I have noticed that since downloading has taken off they aren't as assholic as they used to be with the "limited release window".

its practices like this that encourage pirating, I have a whole slew of Looney Toons episodes and 1940's disney shorts, and it's because I couldn't get them anywhere else

This year, you can expect Fantasia and Beauty and the Beast to be released in Blu-Ray.

I agree, tho: the Vault, and the slow-ass release schedule is absolutely annoying as hell.

This is Disney's strategy. It's funny because that would not work with the Star Trek franchise as the demographic is not age 3-12 and then disappears. Trek's 10-80 demographic is able to purchase at anytime and that's why all of the films and TV series have been re-released many times.
Well technically some ENT episodes were rated at TV14 but generally Trek is PG to PG13 and younger audience starting age bracket reflects.

Trek double dip on TOS TV series?
I love how this guy [comment 5] gives the prices for quadruple dips of obsolete formats:
let’s see how it compares. Here’s how much it would cost to get JUST Season 1 in most of the previous releases: Original VHS Release (1 ep per tape, $20.00 each) – $580.00
Laserdisc release (2 eps per disc, $60.00 each) – $900.00
Original DVD release (single discs, 2 eps per disc – $30.00 each) – $450.00
Original DVD Season set – $160.00, original version only (now sells for around $60.00)
HD-DVD/DVD Combo Season Set – $130.00, remastered version only (now sells for around $85.00)
Blu-ray Season 1 set – $120.00 SRP, usually sold for between $60-90, both original and remastered version in HD.

And now in Q2 2010 you can get TOS series each entire season at $40./season on Blu-ray.

Disney is starting something for digital downloads being "buy once view anywhere" type of model called KeyChest and hopes to get it to consumers by the end of 2010.

this was not intended as a Disney only venture.
Disney officials said they hope to use KeyChest to build momentum for the long-stalled digital distribution of films.
KeyChest will not be a service that consumers access directly.
Rather, Disney envisions KeyChest as a program that retailers can tap into to verify that consumers have already purchased the right to access a movie, and then make that movie available to the consumer across different devices.
Disney realizes that the entire system is useless if it doesn't reach critical mass.

The Disney films being released in HD 1080p will be totally adequate for decades to come. Releasing on Blu-ray will enable them to be available via Ebay in the used market for say 15-20 years. Once Disney stops releasing physical media (probably 15 years in the USA) for it's movies/TV shows they will have even more control for digital download with their 3rd party providers for the download and legal contracts.

Blu-ray could be the last physical media release of Disney's library and they know it.

This really annoys me as well. I missed out on getting Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs when the "Platinum Edition" was available. I only recently got it when it was re-released as the "Diamond Edition."

I've wanted to collect all the classic Disney animated movies for some time now. I hate having to wait months between each purchase.

So no bluray of Song Of The South comig out soon?

 I think that's a safe bet.

I have come to honestly think that the only way that movie is ever coming back out is through some kind of archival collection that Disney can disassociate themselves from, like maybe a Criterion Collection kind of thing.

I've never heard of

Song of the South (1946) before but I've read the book about the tales of Brer Rabbit.
Yes the film would be politically incorrect that even though it won major awards.
Year Result Award Category/Recipient(s)
1948 Won Oscar Best Music, Original Song
Allie Wrubel (music)
Ray Gilbert (lyrics)

For the song "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah".
Nominated Oscar Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture

we won't be seeing it.

I dont understand why they are releasing a dvd/bluray version of Beauty & the Beast when they plan to release a 3-d version of the film in theaters (for 2011.) Wouldnt it make more sense to keep the film in the vault so the 3-d release will be more anticipated(& then release it on dvd/bluray)?

anyway I already have the first dvd release & I dont see any need for this film to be in 3-d. I did see it when it was released on Imax b/c its not often you get to see older Disney animated film again on the big screen, but I think 3d-fying it is pointless. Hercules, Tarzan or Lion King maybe but not B&B.
