New Radio Times reveals new TARDIS interior

If one extends the 'desktop theme' allegory, then it would be similar to a pc with broken/jerry-rigged software components. Changing the desktop theme on the pc does not fix the problems 'under the bonnet', so to speak - it merely changes the overall superficial look of the thing..

what's with all the red and Maud 60's colors?? are we trying to recreate the set of laugh in or what? maybe its the magazine pic that is off, but I am not impressed..

Lol. I have to admit, the vibrant colors and those flat upper panels DO give the set a bit of a variety show/talk show feel. It just doesn't seem like as solid a structure as the previous one...

Still though, I like the new console and most of the other elements. And I'm sure it'll grow on me just as the Doctor's new costume has.

you are probably right, it may grow on me with time, still, I think it looks funky..maybe it does well to convey his reformat due to the explosion at the end of the end of time episode..and the fact that most of the parts he has to fix it with are modified from earth..

It looks like a modern art installation. This might be a bad thing.

Like: the multi-level design, glass floor, staircases to nowhere.

Dislike: asymmetrical layout, too-clean look, cheap-looking floor and wall materials, and the flat-sided console. The RTD-era console was beautiful; this looks like it was knocked together out of plywood. Ew.

It looks perhaps a bit too busy, and still not sure about the gramaphone trumpet, but on the whole I think I like it a lot. Love the fact that there's clearly passages leading further into the TARDIS, and like the mix of the classic series and the RTD era elements yet it's also very different.

And Sci, considering you think Freema can act I don't think your opinion of actors in the classic show holds that much water...

Thats what i was wondering.

Looks as though we have a new standard shooting angle though, whereas the previous on was a side shot with the doors on the left of the screen, we now have the doors in full view of the camera at 1 o'clock.

I love it though, not too American looking, but in these shots it does look somewhat American sci fi.

But who cares, new Doctor, new Tardis, new companion...

This model also looks too new and sterile. Tennant's had a lived-in look that this one lacks.

Considering the TARDIS has just regenerated it's no wonder the interior is shiny and new.

Love the new console room!! The RTD console room was my least favorite aspect of the show at that point. Granted, that didn't impact my enjoyment of the show much, but it's great they updated it. It doesn't look so dark and dank.

Kinda off topic, but wasn't there a RTD episode where the Doctor (can't remember which one) said that Earth got it all wrong, and that red isn't the galactic equivalent for emergency, but blue , or maybe mauve, was, or something?

Or maybe it was a different sci-fi show (maybe Hitchhiker's?)...

Anyone remember this?

"Mauve alert" is indeed a reference to the beginning of "The Empty Child."

And died a natural death. If they can't make it live - and Davies did - there's no reason to dig it up and zombify it.

The overall Deco design of the new interior doesn't bother me - it's a bit over the top, but I like Deco fine. Certainly the perspex (we say "plexiglas" or "acrylic," the latter being the material name rather than a brand like the first two) is not a problem. That said, sticking a Victrola horn and a 1950s TV set onto the top of the console, while it may tickle some long-time fans of the franchise, goes beyond camp and veers into twee. Blech.

True. There's no real depth to these photos, and in the actual episodes the camera is going to be focused mainly on the console or a small section of the room anyway. Which will make it a lot less visually overwhelming.

There are a thousand and a half time machines in science fiction. One of the things that made the TARDIS interesting the first time I watched "Rose" was that, well, it was as much a time creature as a time machine.

Eh? What in "Rose" gives the impression of the TARDIS as a creature? And anyway, it's not like machines can't be creatures.

The entire concept of the "desktop theme" presents us with a dilemma. If the TARDIS can just generate a new desktop theme whenever it likes, why does the Doctor ever need to repair it? Why did the console look like it was falling apart throughout the first four seasons of the new series? Why didn't he just tell it to give itself a new desktop setting?

Like somebody else said, a new paint job doesn't deal with a busted alternator.

Agreed - and a natural death after 26 years is nothing to be ashamed of in television. Fortunately, Davies did a wonderful job resurrecting and refreshing the thing.

Well, even the last four years of Who have had plenty of occasions with a tint of the ridiculous - a sense of "Really?!" And Moffat after all gave us Rose and Jack dancing on a spaceship tethered to Big Ben in the midst of the Blitz, and the Doctor crashing through a mirror to have the "Meet my lover the King of France/Yeah, well I'm the Lord of Time" exchange.

Well, the TARDIS does tend to make some rather interesting noises depending on the mood of the character(s) or the situation at hand. Also, Rose Tyler looking into the Heart of the TARDIS, the latter of which was not fully explained.

I'm not saying I like the idea of the TARDIS being a living thing; however, we are talking WHOverse.

Thats what ive just been trying to explain to my other half.

Its devoid of studio/mood/FX lighting, SFX for possible features not yet seen and post production addition of either CG elements or 'cleaning up' in post.

So it may look very different, well, feel very different in atmosphere, besides, we also havnt seen the filming angles apart from the trailer blip, so that may a big factor to its appearence also.

For instance, the roundels on the 'basement' floor?

They are dark inside, so maybe in post production they may add additional effects or some wierd swirling thing, or just leave it blank to prey on our imaginations. Or they are recycling bins for glass/paper/radioactive matter/RTDs scripts and plastic.



And ya know what, i absolutely LOVE the randomness of it all, its brilliant and completely left and new everyime you look at it.

We'll all know for definate in four days anyhow...
