Evans probably got a better offer than that. He's not an unknown actor with few opportunities.

Really? Sorry about the mis-information folks, I could've sworn...

That was one weak-ass crop of actors to choose from. Evans is an entirely average choice. He doesn't suck, his look isn't dopey or un-Cap like. He's fine.

And he was the best out of the bunch. Surely better than Tatum or Phillipe, better than Krascinski (who i still liked as an off-the-wall choice), and everyone else on that first list.

Basically it was a very weak list of actors, and the average one turned out to be best.

The deal calls for Evans to star in at least three "Captain America" movies, with the first hitting theaters on July 22, 2011.

How the hell can Marvel not be planning to release Captain AMERICA on the July 4th Weekend?

That seems like a complete fucking no-brainer to me.

Because Transformers 3 is slated for release on July 4th weekend and going up directly against it would be suicidal.

Now that it seems final with Chris Evans I can live with that choice over some of the others.

Anyone think that Chris Pine would've been a good choice, or at least above average considering the crop that was in the running?

I dunno, I think the one time of the year where we have the highest level of patriotism in the US is the 4th of July and having a movie called Captain America and it being the origin story set during WW2 with the US fighting the good fight against the evil of the Nazi's.

I think Captain America would win that.

At the very least they should bump it up then to Memorial Day. It just seems a waste of 'patriotic bump' to bring it out in the middle of july.

It could be worse, it could have been better. I certainly enjoyed him in Fantastic Four.

I thought he was a very good Johnny Storm. I'm not sure how he'll manage a less wise-cracking or tongue-in-cheek hero. I haven't seen Sunshine but I understand he does well in a straightlaced role.

Not my ideal Cap, but they could have done worse.

In the end, people won't care about patriotism. They'll just want mind numbing, soulless masturbatory-Michael Bay bullshit. That guy is more American than Cap himself.

Not only that, the studio is concerned about marketing Cap to a worldwide audience. They probably want to open the picture day and date around the world, and probably think that doing so on July 4th might be a little much for the foreign box office to swallow.

Perhaps Marvel should remove the word "America" from the title. Fewer eggshells to walk on and apologies to speak.

Chris Evans is Captain America. I just want to say again. Chris Evans is Captain America. I like the way those words play over my lips. Chris Evans IS Captain America.

    WHOOT!

Of all the actors in this world there were a million bad choices for the part. They just so happened to find a GREAT choice!

They picked one of the two actors that actually worked in the otherwise lackluster Fantastic Four movie series and decided to cultivate that asset into their leading man and...

    I couldn't be happier! :D

There are damn few times that sci-fi fans are anything but miserable. For me this is not one of those times. This is a time to celebrate.

I mean I nearly had a fuckin' stroke when Will Smith's name came up for the part. Now if I die I can die happy for they cast the right man for the part of my nation's greatest non-caped or webbed costumed hero. :D :D :D

Probably, it wouldn't surprise me if they had Red Skull as the bad guy in the first movie then have him appear to die. Then later on they do the "Captain America no More!" storyline where it's revealed Skull is alive in a new body created from Rogers' DNA. They'd need USAgent for that story.

Ask and ye shall receive. Don't know if this was DarkHorizons doing or not. Its a crappy costume, as if they shopped someone's head off a homemade costume from Comic Con.

Chris Pine was my top choice. I knew he was unrealistic from the getgo, even more so after I found out that Marvel was looking for an unknown, but then they cast Chris Evans, so... whatever.

I'm happy with Evans -- he's a genuinely good actor, with tons of personality and charisma -- but I hope he steps up his game for Captain America. He's the Superman of Marvel superheroes, I mean, the title speaks for itself... He's done good work in the past, but now it's time to really blow everyone away.

Anyone here who's seen Sunshine shouldn't have any doubts about his acting chops.
