Unpopular Trek Opinions — What Are Yours?

We had a similar thread a looooong time ago, which was a really interesting read. So I figured it wouldn't hurt asking again: What are your unpopular Trek opinions? In other words, opinions about the various series and movies not shared by the majority of Star Trek fans.

Here are some of mine:

I loved Pulaski and wish she would have stayed on The Next Generation
I like Enterprise's second season
Neelix — when employed in a decent storyline (Rise, Fair Trade, Mortal Coil) — was a rather likeable character
I like Star Trek V and don't think Sybok was a bad character at all
I consider The Animated Series a part of the official Star Trek continuity
The Way to Eden is one of my all-time favorite episodes of Star Trek; I love the songs!
I like TNG's Sub Rosa. And The Dauphin. And a hell of a lot more episodes from TNG's abhorrent first and second season
I like the theme song from Enterprise

So, what are yours? Come on, I know you have them, too. You'll feel better afterwards!

I'll agree with a few of those already mentioned. I like Enterprise's theme song. I like Neelix. I like Star Trek V.

I'll get really controversial and say: I didn't think Nemesis was all that bad.

There! I said it, and I'm not sorry.

I agree, I liked Pulaski, much better than Crusher. At least she had some chemistry with Stewart.

I also didn't mind Wesley all that much. I mean, he was being a kid afterall. And sometimes kids can be annoying.

DS9 was bad
VOY was really bad
ENT was very, very disappointing.

1. Picard was in character during the wedding reception scene in Nemesis (The man laughed after being stabbed in the heart, pretended to sing for Lwaxanna's love on the bridge and went commando several times during TNG's run and the movies).

1) I think Neelix can be good sometimes too.
2) I'm not too hot on the Enterprise-E.
3) Generations has some redeeming qualities.

Hell, I think you're in the majority on that one. Every time the topic comes up, there are always many posts that say how much the design sucks compared to the D and how terrible it was that it went down.


For me:

I think TWOK is a terrible movie whose only redeeming aspects are being tied to better TOS movies and a scene or two not directly tied to the main plot.

I think the TOS Ent is a disgusting toy of a design.

I think the Enterprise-E (Sovereign) is far and away the best canon ship design.

I liked the ending to Sacrifice of Angels.

I think the direction Dukat took after it was perfect and was a great story that continued his antithesis to Sisko.

I loved The Way to Eden and Spock's Brain.
I think Trek V is goofy good fun. (triple-breasted cat woman! Woooooo!)

I don't believe that Vulcans were ever really supposed to have any emotions, mate at any time other than their 7 year Pon Farrishy thing, and were not at all nice. That was the whole point of Mr. Spock! It was his HUMAN side that made him special and sympathetic. We weren't supposed to like the Vulcans--those green-blooded alien bastards!

That one didn't even survive all the way through TOS. But I've
never liked the continuing fluffinization of Vulcans. Mean, heartless, emotionless, merciless computing machines is what they were supposed to be! demmit.

(I's glad they went and blew up the planet, before it got any more simperingly NICE! blech.)

OH. And I loved Enterprise's take on Vulcans and thought that it was as close to the original concept as we'd seen in decades!

Boy howdy, it sure feels good to get these things off me chest! yup.

*The Visitor is over-sentimental, and over-rated....and I would have had another older, 'handsomer' actor portray the older Jake. (Or at least an actor who resembled Cirroc Lofton).

*Far Beyond the Stars is over-sentimental, preachy. (I would have preferred it don't another way....I just don't know what 'way' it is).

I think Admiral Dougherty was in the right in Star Trek: Insurrection.

I don't think Jean-Luc Picard is the moral authority everyone makes him out to be.

I love Star Trek V.

I don't think Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I consider Star Trek: Enterprise the second best series the franchised produced.

I also think that Adm. Daugherty was right in Insurrection. The Baku seemed pretty selfish and petty to me.

I like "These Are The Voyages..."


I thought introducing a new Dax for Season 7 was unnecessary and unsuccessful.


I wouldn't wanna watch TMP ever again....even if someone paid me.*


Not one single main character who lasts throughout TOS or TNG gets on my nerves (I don't count Wesley, Pulaski, or Tasha as "lasting main characters"). I genuinely like all of them.



*Amazingly, that doesn't mean I think TMP is actually the worst movie -- TFF? INS? NEM? Each makes a strong cases in their own right --but TMP is just the movie that I would least want to have to sit through all over again.

1. I hate Worf, and TNG Klingons in general. Worf's sole purpose was to get beat up to show how tough the alien-of-the-week was. The TNG Klingons had a one-word vocabulary: "honor". They were thrown into that mindless rut and never emerged for the entire rest of the franchise with the brief and refreshing exception of the Augmented ones in ENT. This is the reason I hate Worf in DS9. He switched from impotent growler to honor-lecturing bore. Klingons are supposed to be mustache-twirling villains, dammit!

2. I think the Temporal Cold War would have been a really cool idea if they had actually gone ahead and done it instead of just half-heartedly referring to it a few times and then forgetting about it completely.

That's not an opinion. That's not knowing/refusing to acknowledge the facts.
(And for those, check out any interview by Trek writers such as D.C.Fontana, who stated that the Vulcans were most definitely meant to MATE ANY DAMN TIME THEY WANTED, and everything else was just a fan misinterpretation. For having "no emotions" - heck, check out the episodes themselves... Amok Time, Journey to Babel, All Our Yesterdays...)

The only thing that you're right about is that they're "not all nice". Well of course they aren't. They have violent emotions that they have to work hard to suppress! They nearly destroyed themselves in the past with wars and aggression! And they're arrogant about their "logic".

OH. And I loved Enterprise's take on Vulcans and thought that it was as close to the original concept as we'd seen in decades!

I liked ENT's take on Vulcans (at least since they fixed the continuity problems in season 4), but how on Vulcan can you possibly claim that it was close to the "original concept" while erroneously claiming that there original concept was that they had no emotions or could not mate outside of Pon Farr? The Vulcans in ENT were extremely emotional, and I'm not just talking about T'Pol as an obvious example (the bad guy V'les looked like he could hardly restrain himself from shouting and punching everyone in the room!) and *cough* we definitely know that T'Pol mated out of Pon Farr.

I'm also at a loss as to which post-TOS series/movie made the Vulcans look "nice" and "fluffy"?

TNG - the only Vulcans in it were Sarek, a TOS character, and Selar, who was in one episode and we barely got to know her.

TNG movies - I don't remember any significant Vulcan characters.

DS9 - the only Vulcans were 1) a Maquis terrorist who participated in blowing up a ship full of people, and tried to force a mind meld on a prisoner, 2) a Starfleet captain who was a real jerk, arrogant and bigoted, 3) a serial killer.

VOY - Tuvok was the grumpiest, most humorless Vulcan ever seen, and he had disturbing, violent impulses that could have made him a killer without his self-control. He also could use aggression and forced melds when investigating a case (Random Thoughts). Then there was also Vorik, who during Pon Farr tried to force a crewmember to have sex with him against her will.

ST09 - every Vulcan character is arrogant, bigoted and prejudiced towards humans, from the teenage bullies to the Vulcan Science Academy. Sarek only gets to be nicer after he and his son have suffered the loss of Amanda. Spock is also arrogant and stiff throughout the first half of the movie and does things like leaving Kirk behind on a planet.

I don't think Mr Spock was a horrible person at all. I don't think he was arrogant.

He was dead cool and someone to be copied.

Oh and as for unpopular opinions:

ENT is actually a rather good series.
I kind of like Archer. He can be a moron, but an endearing one.
I think that Jolene Blalock's acting on ENT was excellent.
I don't really like Kirk that much, especially not in TOS (I like him a bit more in the movies).
I think City on the Edge of Forever is a bit overrated - sure, it's a good episode, but it's not OMG THE BEST EVA! etc.
I think Cause and Effect is really overrated and boring.
I don't care for the Baku in Insurrection, and I think they were annoying and selfish and that Picard was acting stupid.
