"Avatar" Blu-ray/DVD thread

Re: Avatar DVD/BR double-dip on the way

They've already announced November as the special edition release window. So what's the problem?

It's still a double dip. Also you'll note the report, which is on a major entertainment news website, makes no reference to November. First I've heard of it myself. And if I've not heard of it and I darn near live on the Internet, a lot of other people haven't either, so some will buy this and find out the special edition is coming later. Hence, double dip.

You have people whining about double dips for releases that are YEARS apart, so a few months pretty much makes this a textbook case.

When I first saw the headline my thought was maybe this is being released as some sort of Earth Day fund-raiser. That would be a different story. But no such sign according to this.

Re: Avatar DVD/BR double-dip on the way

I guess the double dip is also to coincide with something I read the other day, about a possible re-release of the film to theaters in the fall, with restored footage, etc. The same article also mentioned a planned 2012 rerelease of Titanic (and in 3-D!!!) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking.

Re: Avatar DVD/BR double-dip on the way

Who cares if it's a "double dip"? If you want the extras just wait to buy it. If you don't care about all that stuff (like me) but do want the movie buy the movie. I'd certainly prefer that they release the movie when they can than wait until stuff that I don't care about is ready for the DVDs.

November. Earth Day event.

Well, I'm a guy who believes established habits should be adhered to. Therefore, all DVDs should be released on Tuesdays, no exception.

The snide comment is because I am an asshole.

Titanic in 3-D? Why? Most of the movie is character drama and romance, not really something that needs to be done in 3-D.

Re: Avatar DVD/BR double-dip on the way

What big film isn't double (or tripple)-dipped these days?

It is standard operating procedure. Don't act all shocked!

Re: Avatar DVD/BR double-dip on the way

It does shock me that double-dipping is actually a viable form of DVD marketing. Are there enough people who actually don't object to buying multiple versions of the same movie that somehow justifies continuing the practice?

I am a little confused. When they release a more extended version of Avatar on DVD in November/December will the deleted scenes be place IN the movie or will they only be viewable as extra scenes on the DVD itself?

Re: Avatar DVD/BR double-dip on the way

Avatar will be released 5-6-7 times at least within the next 10 years, what is your problem exactly?

Re: Avatar DVD/BR double-dip on the way

It's a zero dip for me. I watched it in 3D and enjoyed it, but I didn't like it enough to buy in any home video format.

Re: Avatar DVD/BR double-dip on the way

Is Fox responsible for the home format release? They're pretty notorious for double dipping. When The Passion of the Christ was first released as a bare bones DVD, it was pretty obvious what Fox intended to do with it and they did. And with Blu-ray touting increased storage space, Fox is porting over a lot of their titles to Blu without ANY special features from the DVD version(s)!

I think the most-dipped title on DVD is still Army of Darkness.

Re: Avatar DVD/BR double-dip on the way

Given that 3D support in Blu-ray players is currently in it's infancy (Sony announced some firmware had been developed to provide 3D support a month or so back), there's no point in releaseing in 3D now cos nobody will be able to play it.

You've got to be kidding. This has been standard practice for 10 years now, ever since New Line with their LOTR films announced up front that they would do it. (and even before that it happened frequently - New Line were very open about it, though)

Hey, at least they are up front about it. No surprise releases coming down the line.

I don't think that its been made clear yet on how the deleted scenes will be presented in the extra DVD.

If the deleted scenes are just an add on to the DVD itself I will get the bare bones edition and just watch the deleted scenes on line.

I know the DVD double-dip has been around for quite a while, I'm just surprised it's lasted. I remember in 2003 when double-dipping really began kicking in thinking "this is going to come back and bite them in the ass." But it still hasn't. Weird.

Re: Avatar DVD/BR double-dip on the way

I'm hoping there will be an commentary track or two or else I will be forgoing the extras dvd.
