What ship do you use? you might wanna do exploration mission first after promotion. You can buy very good items for the exploration badges it will earn you. So you dont have to wait for good drops or buy expensive stuff on the exchange.
If there is a specific mission you have difficulty with, just ask someone else in the fleet to join you on a team. There`s almost always at least one of us online.

Made it to Commander 4 today. :) I'm also getting good drops from enemies, and using that to equip my team and ship.

Bird of Prey squads don't really give me any problems now, and the Escorts aren't too much of a problem. Until this morning, it was taking me ten minutes of fighting to kill a Warbird, but I seem to be doing that OK too now.

Loving the storyline. :D Might do some exploration at some point this week if I have time - otherwise next weekend. (Sunday is Mothering Sunday in the UK so I shall be busy.)

Well, I've got more than one key and it's unlikely I find someone else in RL who wants to use it. they expire by the end of the month. you might as well use on of them and give yourself a minor headstart in the game.

Edit: I'll PM it to you if you give the word.

Something to excite you further - For each promotion, you get a free ship. :)

That is unless you're like me, who just reached captain and got disconnected, leading to me not being able to get a tier 4 ship for free. I'm pondering whether or not to buy it or stick to my heavy cruiser.

    ----

Love PVP, it's both fun and a great place to get experience and energy credits.

The ship is free with the promotion?

    Holy crap!

I'll have like over 20,000 energy credits to use on hardware then, not including stuff I can port over from my old ship...

I need to breath into a paper bag...

    :-P

You can also use some of them to pay for putting the proper number rank pips on your character and any bridge officers your promote.

Ah, yes, Star Trek Online... it's such a mixed bag. In one hand, it's Trek. On the other hand, it's not. Trek that isn't like Trek... what a mess. Shoot first, ask questions later, endless amount of combat, no diplomacy or really any choices you can make. Kinda sucks in that regard. There's some very nice missions, but also a lot of the new lore seems to disregard stuff established in the series. Literally everyone is attacking the Federation all of a sudden, which is kinda overt. Also both the Borg and Species 8472 are quite weak in the game. Sad, but not surprising.

Well, aside from that, it's a bit repetitive, and lacks content at the moment. I played to maximum rank in just a bit over two weeks, at which point there was nothing to do, so I haven't really played since.

Space combat was enjoyable, but ground combat is mostly endured rather than enjoyed. Of course the repetitiveness didn't do any favours for either style of combat.

There's some nice ships, but I just wish the lower rank ships were upgradeable. I don't really like any of the escorts other than the Akira (well, mine is Akira for the two front parts, Oslo for the rear), but it's completely obsolete as Admiral. Then there's the Intrepid, which is my favorite ship in the game. I also like the Miranda-class starter ship (ShirKahr with a Centaur saucer, actually), but as with the Akira, it's not really usable later on ;) Incidentally, my skills are mostly for escorts, but quite a bit of skills for the Intrepid as well.

I have a 60-day game card sitting on my desk. But I think I'll have to wait for several "45-day content updates" before it makes sense to use it. Hopefully, the new content will be good. I really want to like the game, but so far it's indeed a mixed bag.

Oh, and a tip for those worrying about "loot". Don't. You'll be getting more Energy credits than you can possibly use in a sane manner (I've bought the Intrepid and Runabout with credits for example, yet I still have like 800k credits unused) so you can buy stuff from the Exchange if you feel you need something. Also the missions are overly easy, so you can pretty much equip whatever and be fine 99% of the time. Exploration is an easy source of loot, but I'd recommend putting those off for the most part until you reach Captain, since you'll tire of the repetitive missions quite quickly (they're similar regardless of rank - repetitiveness strikes again), yet Captain-grade loot is still useful as Admiral as well.

Would anyone be willing to hook me up with a trial so I can try STO out? I surely want to give it a go, but I want to make sure I like it first. Most MMOs don't grip me.
