That update look excellent. I'm really interested to see what new bridges and ships will be available.

So I just got promoted to Lt. Commander and got to pick my cruiser, and looking at the three cruiser choices given me going the engineer path they are sorely lacking. Not only that, but every time I tried to use the randomization feature to create a unique looking ship combination, my game would crash! So I gave up on that and decided to just decide between the three ship designs as they come from the factory, new ship smell and all. Here were my thoughts as I went through my process:

First, I love the design of the Constitution refit may be the best space ship design in the history of science fiction, but every self respecting Trekkie knows all the Connies should be in museums at this time of trekdom. Instead of the Connie, I would have loved to have seen the Constellation class as an option here as there had been rumors that it was going to be before the launch of STO. Now there's a tier 3 cruiser called the Stargazer class which looks nothing like the Constellation.

Next, the Vesper class. I tried to find some redeeming qualities about this ship and I just simply couldn't. Why oh why couldn't they have given us the Excelsior class as a choice here instead of this eyesore that has parts that only serve to remind us of the Excelsior class? I don't think I've actually seen a Vesper class starship being flown in game yet. Even the Computer run ships in certain missions use Excalibur class ships! Oh Cryptic... Poor sad Cryptic... Next time... Just use what the good ILM gods have already given you....

And finally that does bring us to the Excalibur class. Now after looking at her, I kinda started to like her and she's a perfect modern "retro" look for the Connie. The lines are for the most part smooth and the overall design works for me, though the impulse deck appears a bit blocky. They could have ditched the Connie and have had the Excalibur as your Connie look alike option. But regardless of what the designers did with the other ships, they did a pretty nice job with Excalibur. After weighing in the options I decided to go with the Excalibur as my Tier 2 cruiser and I namer her the USS Falcon.

So I'm officially at tier 2. Cryptic now have 1-2 tiers left to get the Nebula class in here somewhere depending on how they want to classify her before I can get it. Let's go, Cryptic! I don't wanna have to settle here. The Nebula class is my dream girl!!!

Well you could check the C-store after they add those new ship variants to see if a Nebula class is there in about a week or so.

You also dont have to stick with Cruisers just because you're an Engineer. I am an Eng, I bought Escort for Tier 2, will prob try Cruiser in T3, Defiant T4. Why? Because I can.

Also there is the advanced button where you can mix and match one piece at a time as opposed to spamming randomize till it works for you. That might solve your crash issue, incidentally - maybe your pc can't handle flipping it all at once but might manage one piece at a time?

Yeah, I tried cycling through the advanced menu a bit and nothing mixed well to me at all.

I got lucky with the random mix I got with my light cruiser, but nothing felt right with the cruiser except the Excalibur as it came from the factory.

I know I can cross careers when it comes to ship choice, and the only somewhat attractive choice in any other path would have been the Nova, but I'd rather have the second engineer slot at tier 2 than a second science.

My copy of STO arrived today, so I'll be playing tonight. I started playing with a buddy key and made it up to LT 8. Hopefully I can continue from that point. At that time I had a lot of mineral/space samples, so I think my first order of duty is to fly over to memory alpha and get upgrades for my ship. As I recall, my shields weren't that great. but I did have a couple of nice weapon pick ups.

When I hit Lt. Cmdr. I took a connie with Excalibur struts and nacelles. To me that looked great. Classic lines with a more modern touch.

I got my copy yesterday and I played for a couple of hours. I'm at L9 now, but I feel like I'm not optimizing my ship, kits and skills as best I can. Is there a good guide anywhere that explains how to use the kits, upgrade your ship, train bridge officers, and use the collected anomoly samples? This is my first MMO, so I'm new to a lot of this. The manual that comes with the game does a poor job of explaining how do any of the above.

Thanks :)

what's a manual? cant say I've ever read one of those:) with my skills and ship I've been mix and matching to see what gives me a better result.

I hit lt commander a week back and got this little ship, modified connie with different pylons and a different neck

also got an escort to use as a 'sunday drive' ship when I want a different style of play

Unfortunately, BECAUSE it's an MMO and stuff gets changed/updated all the times (things buffed, other things 'nerfed' (MMO term meaning 'made less powerful (soft like a Nerf ball)' usually due to players doing something in a way not foreseen) - and content and new features added and updated on a regular basis; most MMO manuals are useless after the first few content patches.

Also, 'optimization' here would depend on a number of personal factors (such as your playstyle and preferences - everyone's a little different usually).

All that said there are a number of sites gathering and posting STO analysis info, just Google 'Star Trek Online, and a lot of those sites shoukld come up. STO is stil VERY new in MMO terms (by comparison World of Warcraft and many older MMOs have had YEARS of player analysis; and as a result, more player build/skill/gear analysis). Hopefully STO will last a long time and more people will 'crunch' and 'post the numbers'.
