How to instantly ruin a good action sequence!

I hate when the hero jumps from high up and lands in a crouch and then stands up all slow and cool. Ex; when Batman did it on a car in the start of The Dark Knight.

I love the scene in the first Men In Black when Will Smith does that, then he says "NYPD, means I will NOCK YO PUNKASS DOWN!" :guffaw:

Well, one way to ruin a good action sequence is to add a silly slide-whistle sound effect to your signature car stunt! (SEE The Man with the Golden Gun):klingon:

Cars flip and explode in TV shows and movies because it's a cheap thrill, both perceptually and financially. It's that simple.

Yeah. Like sound in space, inexplicably exploding cars will always be with us.

yea, the "slo-mo hero walk from explosion" is totally over used now.
Didn't you hear? Cool guys don't look at explosions.

I used to think it was cool. Now, whenever I see a shot like that in a movie, all I can do is start singing the song.

Cool guys don't look at explosions
They light the fuse and they walk away
Big fire; slow motion...

You would think that they would run faster from an exploding fireball of death. :p

Nah, outrunning is lame. Outwalking is way, way, way cooler.

That clip never gets old.

I love that he takes off his glasses for the sole purpose of putting them on again.

As for cars exploding: Looks pretty. Action movies are frequently very loud, silly affairs, and scientific realism would probably dampen that.

car action stunts

I was watching the season finally of "Burn Notice"

...car in a high speed chase that hits something and pops into the air rolling to one side".
This was a dated effect before the "A Team" was canceled.
Why do effects teams still fall back on this cliched visual?
Television series are on budgets. That's why.

By 2010 most things car action sequences and explosions have been done every way you can.

Episodic series cannot afford the elaborate Michael Bay 'splosionfests' you get with the big-budget feature films.

Occasionally over the years car-action sequence firsts have happened such as

In the James Bond 1974 movie "The Man with the Golden Gun" Bond was driving a car and jumped a river and did a 360 degree barrel roll en route.

I remember Alias had some high speed stunt driving in the first few seasons. No memorable car stunts though.

To me the worst explosion scenes have always been the 1970s & 1980s TV episodics with a helicopter explosion behind the Southern California hill. [off screen with smoke & sound effects only].

EDIT: I just saw The Borgified Corpse post after I posted. Ha!
