Hoo-marn.

The Borg Queen

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Why don't the Ferengi know how to pronounce "Human" properly?

Have they never heard anyone say it before, or what?

Maybe people should start calling them furr-en-jee until they learn how to pronounce it properly or they STFU.

If a Ferengi deliberate called me hoo-marn to my face I'd rip his ears off. :klingon:

I think Quark sometimes pronounced "Human" correctly, but I've always assumed it was the way the Ferengi looked down upon humans, seeing them as either barbaric, primitive, inferior etc.

I think they CAN say it right, but they kind of say Hew-mon as sort of an insult. Like "Oh those silly hew-mons and their root beers and ice cream."

Same reason Bush I always said "SAD-um" instead "Sa-DAHM." He knew it pissed the other guy off to mispronounce it.

There was a theory that "hew-mon" is an actual word in the Ferengi language, and so the Ferengi use that wod in referance to humans because of how similar it sounds. This is kind of supported in the Enterprise episode with Ferengi, T'Pol says "human" (pronounced properly) to one of them, and he repeats "hew-mon."

"Hoo-marn"?
where did that 'r' come from?
there's no 'r' in there

Good question. It's written hew-mon in the closed captioning on my DVDs at any rate.

My guess is that they used it as an insult, like the Andorians called humans, even dark-skinned ones, pinkskins.

They say hew-mon as a slur because they don't like hew-mons. Nothing's wrong with that.

Hew-mons and pseudo-hew-mons with ugly noses and foreheads call the Ferengi a lot worse. I.e: Kira often, very maliciously, calls Quark 'toad' and other such slurs, for no reason.

One has to wonder why a Terran amphibian life form is held in such contempt as to be used as a slur.

Though Kira was also probably unaware, not being familiar with Human myths, that she was paying Quark quite a compliment - it implies that he can turn into a prince if kissed by a princess. :p

:techman:

I also like the idea that it's just the way many Ferengi pronounce "Human." To them, "Hew-mon" is the correct way to pronounce it.

Sort of like the way "lieutenant" can be pronounced "loo-ten-nant" or "left-ten-nant" depending on what side of the pond you are, with both being the correct pronounciation where they are, IMO.

I suspect their language doesn't allow the "schwa" sound at the end of a word. (Though I doubt the Trek writers were consistent to that point when naming Ferengi--I mean, "Gaila" is an exception, unless we're to believe the final "a" is more sharply pronounced in the Ferengi language...)

I thought that was a frog. Toads are what witches turn people into. Either that or newts.

I was turned into a newt once. But I got better.

I am offended by this discrimination and denial of toad's amphibian rights. :klingon:
