Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

What the hell was with the single scene with a fake pudgy Clark Kent looking all black-and-white-serialy, complete with glasses that Lois (or anyone else) didn't seem to notice wasn't Clark?

^

It was a pretty big scene that they just completely glossed over. I'm shocked no one's so much as mentioning it. If you missed it, it was when Lois handed "Clark" some coffee at the Daily Planet. There was no indication that she didn't realize it wasn't Clark, and he looked a lot like the guy from the old serials.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Really? Didn't seem like a big scene to me, seemed more like a moment of Lois not paying attention because it wasn't something that'd advance her career.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

I noticed that guy too.... but then I've seen some of the old serials...
thought he looked like what a clark kent should look like...

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

That guy actually kind of reminded me of Dean Cain's Clark Kent to be honest...and wasn't he like the editor or publisher with glasses on? I assume that was some kind of gag to explain why Lois never recognizes Clark as Superman. She can't even recognize Clark heh.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Really enjoyed it with two minor complaints. Shanks' Hawkman voice was a bit, I dunno, off. And Stargirl's costume was great... except for the mask. Could've done the mask a bit better.

Neither of those really bothered me, though not having seen Green Arrow on the show, his voice bothered me even more than Hawkman's.

Loved the writing and the homage being paid to the JSA. Hope these guys (plus maybe Alan and Jay, who were mentioned as "still out there") show up again for the upcoming Apokolips threat and show Clark's team what real superheroes look like. :bolian:

Seeing as how this is an AU, they could have Alan pass off his ring to someone (Hal, though Guy and maybe John would fit in better). Not that I don't want to see Alan, but the show seems to be more about setting up the current generation.

Let's keep in mind that one of the perennial enemies of the Flash is Captain Boomerang. With the right amount of intelligence a cryokinetic can be a big threat. Granted, Icicle here didn't come across that way...

I think you meant Captain Cold (Geoff's favorite villain, possibly even his favorite character). Captain Boomerang's the, you know, guy with the boomerangs. :p

Also, Icicle (Sr.) is specifically an old foe of Alan Scott going back to the 40s, so going after him makes sense both in-universe and as a bit of homage.

And another character who died in the comics and in the episode. Fun fact, due to his respect for the Flash, Joar bequeathed half of his estate to the Flash. Since he was the only active Flash at the time, Wally West accepted it and created an endowment in honor of his mentor Barry Allen.

Well, since this is an AU anyway, perhaps in this universe Ted Knight didn't do anything important, and Sylvester Pemperton invented the Cosmic Rod (since he is a genius after all)?
It's possible, though since most of the other JSA members were present and their histories were mostly close to the comics (with the inclusion of Checkmate instead of the House Un-American Activities Committee as a notable exception), I'm going with they just didn't feel it was worth mentioning, not that it didn't happen.

The point is that no one -- including Lois, after looking him square in the face -- realized it wasn't Clark Kent. It's like they tried to slip in some kind of super-hypnosis or something to explain why Clark doesn't bother with a disguise, but then completely failed to address it in any way, shape, or form other than that brief scene.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

After thinking about it I'd have to agree that then inclusion of Starman would have overcomplicated and confused the SSK to Stargirl legacy. Starman's costume lacked the patriotic flair that Sly and Courtney's share.

Hal and Barry are probaby off limits because of the GL and Flash movies. Jade,Obsidian and Impulse might be possible though. If we cant have a Wonder Woman, then Fury would be cool. Hector Hall as the new Dr Fate?

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Just to answer clarify something from earlier in the thread - In the comics, "Watchtower" is not a person. It's a location - the headquarters of Oracle (Barbara Gordon post-Batgirl). She serves the same role as Chloe - the eyes and ears of the Justice League. Watchtower has also been used as the name of the JLA moon-based headquarters.

Oracle's HQ was the Clocktower, not Watchtower.
You're right. My confusion stems from Oracle being connected to both. :alienblush:

Impulse has already appeared in a couple of episodes, but Fury wouldn't be a bad surrogate Wonder Woman, assuming Diana is still off-limits.

In hindsight, this is kind of a problem with Smallville I mean, I think it's cool to try and do these stories where other heroes exist (as opposed to the usual one, with a ton of people from a rouges gallery), but it kind of falls flat when a typical connection can't be used for one reason or another.

I could be wrong, but wasn't Impulse meant to be an early Flash?

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

I thought it was interesting that the Star Spangled Kid's notebook did not show Impulse and Cyborg. Who where not part of the Silver Age generation of characters.

Of all the heroes to appear on the show, Impulse has the most dubious connection to the comics and origin was the least explained. Bart was carrying IDs with the names Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, and Wally West. Now that we know that Jay Garrick/The Flash actually exists it would make sense if there is an actual connection between the two.

That Green Lantern ring gave me a woody.

So it was sitting in a case in Hall's museum.

The most powerful weapon in the universe, but Hawkman picks up a "knife"?

I missed the Michael Holt (Mister Terrific) reference. Where was it?

When Lois comes into the Planet rambling about her day to "Clark", she mentions going to interview Michael Holt.

The Black Canary is in the portrait as well. So there might be a connection her the the Black Canary seen on Smallville.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

And we have to remember, just as with the BATMAN BRAVE AND BOLD, smallville can not be pegged into any of the Earths. In fact, the JSA in this episode only appears to be out of action just over a decade or longer...not since the 40s-50...

I would place it about thirty years ago.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

In an interview Geoff Johns said the original thought was to have Black Canary and to reveal that her mother was in the JSA. But the actress recently had a baby.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

All the hype and it delivered damn poorly. But I expected it to be poor anyways.
