In an interview Geoff Johns said the original thought was to have Black Canary and to reveal that her mother was in the JSA. But the actress recently had a baby.

That and she was probably busy with Stargate Universe.

Correct. Another series was mentioned but I could not remember which one.

Artist Rodolfo Migliari posted a scan of his painting of the Justice Society used in the episode.

Its odd that Hawkman's wings and breast plate appear purple. It did not look like that in the episode.

Very cool.

This was a pretty cool episode. Too bad Smallville isn't like this on a regular basis. I'm ready for a new live action Superman show already. TPTB - Bring on Metropolis. It's time for the red and blue suit and cape.

And we have to remember, just as with the BATMAN BRAVE AND BOLD, smallville can not be pegged into any of the Earths. In fact, the JSA in this episode only appears to be out of action just over a decade or longer...not since the 40s-50...

Rob
I would place it about thirty years ago.

The black and white newsreel footage was supposed to be from the 1960s, judging from the reference to "student riots."

Clearly, the JSA were all inspired to don costumes by the Adam West BATMAN series! :)

LOL..

Actually, for a TV budget, I thought they did pretty good. I am not happy that DR.FATE died. That guy deserves his own show! In fact, I hope this was a backdoor pilot and we see more!

That Green Lantern ring gave me a woody.

So it was sitting in a case in Hall's museum.

The most powerful weapon in the universe, but Hawkman picks up a "knife"?

So, what your saying is that you temporarily became impervious to Alan's ring? ;)

And this is Hawkman we're talking about. He'd take the melee weapon over the ring any day of the week. Plus, I'm choosing to believe that the battery and ring were replicas and Alan still has the originals.

Seems to me, Al Pratt was more inspired by the Village People, judging by the facial hair! Speaking of hair, the afros during the student riot screamed "70's" to me.

what was watchtowers uniform like anyway?
anybody got a pic they could post?

Second that. I'd like to see what Watchtower is supposed to look like.

Is this her? http://readrant.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/alone-on-the-watchtower.jpg

As previously stated, there is no person, Watchtower in the DCU, but it seems you guys are thinking of former Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, who goes by the name Oracle.

The scan shows Black Canary and others aboard the JLA's satellite, which is called the Watchtower.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

^^^ I wasn't thinking anything of the sort... I've not read any comic's since the end of the 70's....
I was just gathering information... I was curious....
But then... the trunkload of comics I do have is from before that...

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Gotcha. Well, hope my bit of information helped. As others said, Chloe seems to be fulfilling Oracle's role in the comics, in that she's their tech person and the hub of their information network.

Did you catch Clark's look when Lois mentioned that she liked Fate's cape? I think she planted a seed there...

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

^ Well, Clark already owns a red cape. One was given to him by the actress from the Warrior Angel movie from a few seasons back.

They were intentionally vague as to when the JSA operated. Even if that archive footage could be dated, that is just when they were arrested and disbanded. Presumably they were together for a number of years before that. Not even counting their solo years before the group formed.

My guess for a time line - The group formed in the late 60s, early 1970s. Still at a time of war protests. Lasted until the late 70s, early 80s at earliest.

Being vague was best though. Carter Hall certainly did not look as old enough to be of that generation. Yeah I know he is much older, but his mortal body should age and die naturally... presumably.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

With Sylvester Pemberton (and later Courtney) using the Cosmic Staff, Starman might have beening left out doesn't make much sense. If they featured not one, but two characters using Ted's technology, you'd think they would have referred to him. Even a throw away line.

They already had to establish the connection between Sylvester, "Stripesy" and Courtney. Probably best to simplify the story and leave Ted out. The average viewer will just assume Sylvester invented the Rod, which is cleaner and less complicated.

(I was actually amazed that they included the Hawks' whole reincarnation backstory . . . )
I'm hoping they held back reference to Starman so there would be a story for when Stargirl makes her next appearance on the show.

His mortal bodies tend to die un-naturally and often before their time ;) But they tend to age slower than most.

Just a totally random and out there theory I'd like to add to the Clark lookalike that Lois was talking to...what if that it was future Clark? LOL? For some reason he'd come back to the past and needed something from his desk? I'm not saying this is who it was nor do I have a reason why he would randomly come back but he did call Lois "Lane" and did so with a smirk on his face.

Or it was Clark from Earth One.
