What the hell was with the single scene with a fake pudgy Clark Kent looking all black-and-white-serialy, complete with glasses that Lois (or anyone else) didn't seem to notice wasn't Clark?

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Average for the whole lot.

I have no idea why such a big deal was made out of Icicle. In a normal episode, he's the sort of villain Clark wouldn't lose any sleep over. Hell, Ollie could have dealt with him.

I notice also that Clark just stands there during the final fight and uses his heat vision aggressively, which is something Superman rarely, if ever, does.

Agreed. Before he took the Dr. Fate helmet, Icicle wasn't anything more than the freak of the week.

I figured for a while that they were making some sort of point about the JSA not working as a team so Icicle could pick them off one by one.

Dr. Fate is made to look like a right chump and then they make a big deal about Icicle coming for Alan Scott despite showing us that he still has his ring. Huh ? That guy's supposed to be a threat to a Lantern ? :wtf:

1) A few members missing from the painting"
  • The Spectre
  • Johnny Thunder
  • Dr Mid-Nite
  • Superman (understandable)
  • Batman (embargoed)
  • Wonder Woman (probably embargoed)
  • Robin (part of the bat-embargo)
  • Starman
  • Power Girl (too confusing to use? The Superman connection)
  • Huntress (bat-embargo? Would be fun to see her team up with Chloe and Canary ;) )
The Spectre and Dr Mid-Nite were both in the painting.
I think the painting was supposed to show original members. Power Girl and Huntress were part of the "next generation." And the Golden Age Batman was retconned out of the JSA a long time ago.
So was the Star-Spangled Kid. He Power Girl and Robin all joined in 70s. Hawkgirl didn't join until thr 80s.

Yes, I know the big three were retconned out. I was listing all the members regardless of current continuity.

The Spectre and Dr Mid-Nite were both in the painting.
Thats what I get for not double checking.

Well this episode sure seperated the comic fans from the Smallville fans. ;) So many questions from the "mundanes". :)

With Sylvester Pemberton (and later Courtney) using the Cosmic Staff, Starman might have beening left out doesn't make much sense. If they featured not one, but two characters using Ted's technology, you'd think they would have referred to him. Even a throw away line.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Not sure if you guys have discussed this aspect of the episode but Geoff Johns tweeted that the Apocolypse that Amanda Waller was referring to was indeed "Apokoplis" the planet so wow and interesting. Perhaps we will see Darkseid in the season finale.

TV budget New Gods....hmmmmm. Not to sure about that.

Could have used Ted intead of Sylvester.

Or Jack (which was who I thought it was when he first showed up). Of course, I didn't know he was going to die then...

Had the same thought till I noticed the star pattern.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Well, I am a JSAite. I grew up reading their old comic books from the 40-50, and later 70s rebirth, and I think, with what they had to work with (a tv budget) this was DC COMIC's finest two-hours EVER on TV. This was great writing with great respect to the JSA...

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Wow.

Who Outwatchmens the Watchmen?

Welling was the only thing in this story that sucked.

Every one talks about his destiny and then treats him like he's already there. it's like they need to turn the hero worship uop to 11 for when he finally gets the cape.

same with the "team". It was three people. Three were powerless and one was a non combatant, and since when was the Martain Manhunter a part of the protoJLA? Takl about a ringer.

I loved the glimpse of his fate that was the same as the season on or two bloke who could see people's deaths.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

the story where the JSA got shut down by the government came out years (maybe a decade) before the Watchmen was published.

So true, Nerys. The story about the government coming after them, and also the battle between old/new generations of heros, comes from the JSA. Some of these young whipper snappers just dont understand that some of these stories they love so much were told much better DECADES ago. WATCHMEN and HEROES all owe a debt of gratitude to the JSA...

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Like you I'm a long term fan. I read my first JSA story in the 60s. The first comic I remember reading was a JLA/JSA crossover.

Re: Smallville#9x11 & 12 "Society" & "Legends" - Discuss/Grade <SPOILE

Really enjoyed it with two minor complaints. Shanks' Hawkman voice was a bit, I dunno, off. And Stargirl's costume was great... except for the mask. Could've done the mask a bit better.

Loved the writing and the homage being paid to the JSA. Hope these guys (plus maybe Alan and Jay, who were mentioned as "still out there") show up again for the upcoming Apokolips threat and show Clark's team what real superheroes look like. :bolian:

Let's keep in mind that one of the perennial enemies of the Flash is Captain Boomerang. With the right amount of intelligence a cryokinetic can be a big threat. Granted, Icicle here didn't come across that way...

Also, Icicle (Sr.) is specifically an old foe of Alan Scott going back to the 40s, so going after him makes sense both in-universe and as a bit of homage.

Or Jack (which was who I thought it was when he first showed up). Of course, I didn't know he was going to die then...
Had the same thought till I noticed the star pattern.

Well, since this is an AU anyway, perhaps in this universe Ted Knight didn't do anything important, and Sylvester Pemperton invented the Cosmic Rod (since he is a genius after all)?

Good as this was, I can't agree I'm afraid. The DCAU at its best was better than this, even with Johns' writing.

They already had to establish the connection between Sylvester, "Stripesy" and Courtney. Probably best to simplify the story and leave Ted out. The average viewer will just assume Sylvester invented the Rod, which is cleaner and less complicated.

(I was actually amazed that they included the Hawks' whole reincarnation backstory . . . )
