The Future Of Trek Is A Spinoff

  1. It will be in the Trekverse but wont be called Trek. So it wont be judged before newbies see it.

Why associate it with trek in any way at all? If you think you have a good story, write it, ignore star trek, its in very good hands at the minute.

why is always a "flag ship" why can't they just have a show with a lowly little ship... maybe something that breaks down/need constant repairs

and why does the main person HAVE to be a "bridge officer" just make him a low ranking/NCO person... they have lives too

no, no... not like firefly

That is exactly how Firefly was pitched, so I'd avoid going to the same guys!

You're simply not understanding. I don't want it to be something else, I want it to be Trek. There's an entire Trek Universe to explore and we don't need Starfleet or the Federation to be the ones doing the exploring.
Starfleet and the Federation isn't Star Trek, it's just one aspect of it just like Klingons or Romulans.
If Star Trek is not Starfleet or the Federation, then what is it? Define it. List these "Star Trek rules" out, numbered one to how many there are.

Take a show like 24, and remove Jack Bauer, remove CTU, remove the President's sub plot even... take all those things away but keep the premise that it's still a story that takes place in one day, in real time, in the same universe, is it still 24?
Nope. Without Jack Bauer there is no 24. But 24's premise is more narrow than Star Trek, which can get by without Kirk. However, there are things that Star Trek can't get by without.

First of all, you can do 24 without Jack Bauer, just like you can do Trek without Kirk, regardless of how narrow you suppose the premise is. But that wasn't even the Flapjoy's point, if you bother to read the post, he said it wouldn't be the 24 he would care to watch without the rest of those elements, even if it were packaged as 24.

Caprica has got me thinking. The military side of Star trek has been done to death. They've done on large ships, they've done it on small ships, they've done on space stations. Hell, the only thing they never really got into is the view from the enlisted man. However, this is something they haven't done yet. 700 some odd episodes and 11 movies and we don't know all that much about the civilian side of the federation.
