What is the blue hue???

While watching a few episode of TNG and DS9, and watching the end credits, I noticed a strange blue hue in the lower left and upper left corners. I realize they are playing a loop that was actually used during the opening credits of TNG, after the Enterprise zooms away...but why OR what is causing that blue hue???

I have always noticed that too. But I have no idea what it is or where it is coming from, unless it is a reflection on the starfield. (The starfields for TNG and DS9 were actually produced by filming inside a large half cylinder of black plex that had hundreds of tiny holes drilled into it and lit from behind.)

Well, for moving starfields outside TNG windows, they had a rotating drum draped in black fabric, covered in little aluminum squares, upon which a strong light was shone.

I have one little "star from outer space" which was in "A Baggie Full of Star Trek" charity auction item, by Bjo Trimble, who had collected a range of bizarre floor sweepings during a set visit to the filming of "Encounter at Farpoint".

Degradation of the analog storage medium that was never corrected when it was transfered to a digital medium of storage would be my guess.

It's not as noticeable on the youtube video as it is on a TV but if you look at the bottom left corner you can see it. Depending on the settings of your monitor the glow may not be visible, it is quite faint compared to the TV broadcasts.

I myself have always wondered about the blue glow. Back in 1987 I thought it was our TV going kaput or some kind of magnetic interference on the picture tube. I spend more than a few hours tweaking color settings, moving stereo and speaker equipment trying to get rid of that damn glow. I have to say I failed in that task

I wish they had spend a little money for 'different' ending credits for the shows that used it (I think TNG-DS9 and Voyager all used that loop at the end of their shows)

I've noticed that quite often. In fact, it was there in the end credits all throughout TNG's run, the first three seasons of DS9, and Voyaer's first season. It didn't disappear until midway through DS9's fourth season and Voyager's second.

I alway's wondered what it was and why it took so long to correct it. Seriously, why would something like that take nearly eight and a half years to correct?

I remember reading somewhere that J.J. Abrams worked as an uncredited intern during the early years on TNG and accidently turned one of the lamps toward the camera during the starfield shoot, resulting in a very slight flaring of the lens...

I just finished watching IN THEORY..and it was still slightly there in the opening credits..and very much still there at the end credits...

It almost looks to me like the edge of a camera lense..did they "film" them off a screen back in those days?

That would explain why it was never corrected during TNG's run. But since they were creating "new" end credits for DS9 and Voyager, there should not have been that blue hue.

Well..being that OP, I am glad I am not the only one who has seen the blue hue. When I first saw it all those years ago on my VCR, I just thought it was my VCR screwing up..I actually took it to RADIO SHACK to have them look at it...
