I was reading up on Carl Sagan on wiki...

and saw an image that prompted me to change my avatar. It's probably been done before, but I don't care.

That's Earth, as seen from Voyager I, 6 billion kilometers away.

That image is neat. I've been a fan of Sagan since I was a teenager. Cosmos was an amazing series. Wouldn't it be neat to see a "Cosmos: Then and Now" series?

They having been showing Cosmos on Discovery recently and it still holds up as a worthwhile series.

Watching it makes me sad that I do not have the necessary mathematical gift to ne an astronomer.

oh hell yes. i sooo want to get into astronomy, astrophysics, and quantum physics, but i suck at anything more advanced than pre-algebra

Pale blue dot....

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.

I vaguely remember reading Cosmos when I was just a little kid. I recall there being a picture of a spaceship with Greek writing on it, but can't remember what all that's about.

Goes to show that you should just try to enjoy life on that little dot and then die.

All the eps of Cosmos are you the YouTubes.

Check 'em out. Start with the last one, #13, "Who Speaks for Earth?" then go to the first and watch them in sequence.

If it is not THE greatest, Cosmos is certainly one of the greatest things televison has ever done for us.

I just bought the Cosmos CD set for my Niece and Nephew for Christmas; I hope it will serve as an antidote to all the mediocrity that everybody else is pushing on them. Carl Sagan was a great man, and it's a terrible shame that he's gone.

I'm generally opposed to gratitious thread bumps, but this thread is about Carl Sagan, so we just can't let it die.

On this board, how does a thread about Carl Sagan have only 9 replies in a day?

Hello McFly!

Have I discovered another subscriber to Anu Garg's Word a day? This was part of today's quote from Dr. Sagan.

Another great PBS series was "The Ascent of Man" hosted by Dr. Jacob Bronowski. Absolutely brilliant. Talking about the responsibilities of scientists while standing outside one of the Geman concentration camps, he reached down and picked up a handful of muck and spoke of the ashes of his ancestors.
