Arise, SIR PATRICK STEWART!

I think it's sad when people get so caught up in their politics or ideology that they can't let themselves notice or appreciate any other aspects of life. Who cares what his politics are? There's more to life than politics. And people who see politics only as an excuse to divide humanity into warring camps of Us and Them are corrupting it into something that does no good. It's important -- indeed, imperative, if we wish to survive and thrive as a civilization -- to be able to find common ground with those we disagree with on certain points. And the enjoyment of works of entertainment and great performances is a very good thing for people with political differences of opinion to connect over.

Agreed. I personally don't care what Patrick Stewart's political opinions are. I just care that he's a damn fine actor, and I've enjoyed his performances for DECADES - long before TNG was ever thought of.

This political silliness even invaded my Doctor Who forum when somebody was whining that Patrick Stewart, with his political beliefs, got a knighthood when Tom Baker didn't! :wtf:

Well, I don't care about Tom Baker's political beliefs, either - and yes, I think he deserves to be knighted as well, but why are people complaining when an actor who I daresay most of the members of this forum have enjoyed watching for many years is honored by his own country for Star Trek and other things which we may not even know about?

No offence, but you've grossly misrepresented the british honours system.

Of course it's a political move! His acting and other things will play a part, but the fact that he's stood resolutely behind labour when they're falling in the polls faster than something that falls quickly, will definately be why he got a K rather than anything else.

So you don't believe he deserves to be a Knight based on his own merits as an actor?

No offence, but you've grossly misrepresented the british honours system.

As do you. Some are obviously to reward political allies, but the majority have no bearing. You might remember John Major was given a KG by this Labour government.

I'm very happy for Patrick, but people must realise one thing. The man is millionaire Champagne socialist who lives the life of Reilly while financially funding a Government and political party that, through "redistribution of wealth", wants to put everyone in the UK in to poverty.

That "Champagne socialist" has earned his money by making alot of people happy. He also pays something like a 50% rate of tax to help to "redistribute wealth" whilst Tory donors squirrel away their funds in off-shore accounts to avoid paying tax. May I ask what you have contributed to making a fairer and happier society, the way Sir Patrick has?

This thread shouldn't have turned political. We should all be congratulating a man that has brought us great joy through the years. I am not a mornachist, but I appreciate the recognition of someones talents in this way.

Yes, this thread is rather embarrassing now. It started as a nice way to voice congratulations for Stewart for deservedly being recognised with an honour, and has descended into petty squabbling.

Never said he didn't, I believe he does, but that's not why it'll have happened in my opinion.

Actually KG is the traditional gift for a former Prime Minister bestowed by the Queen.

He's a great actor and very pleasant guy, but politically I have no time for him. If he was true to his convictions, he wouldn't even be accepting his Knighthood.

That is absolute nonsense - really you don't have any understanding of what you are talking about.

Come on, isn't that a little bit of hyperbole you're engaging in, there? A lot of people support Labour and for different reasons. He's being given the honor for his acting, and many people have been given the honor for doing less than he has.

I don't think many people will be supporting Labour again for about 25 years or so.

Where do you want to start on that point..?

let's see how many people are supporting Cam the Sham after he gets his ass handed to him by Irn Broon in the TV debates. Cam's playing the man because his policies are shite and he's leading a bunch of racist, sexist, money-grabbing, elitist bastards.

RANT ALERT - CONDITION RED - RANT ALERT - CONDITION RED

Kermit the Frog could turn up for the Tories and still win, most Brit's have had enough of this sham of a government.

Brown's every mannerism like those smiles and his slack jawed cretinisms at the end of every sentence make me want to vomit. Why are our soldiers working so hard around the world to ensure free and fair elections for people who don't want them when that unelected arse is sat in Number 10 destroying the UK 1 policy at a time and we can do nothing about it for at least another 6 months? I left the UK recently because of what THEY did to my country. Like 1000's of other nurses, policemen, firemen, teachers, public servants, doctors in addition to the wealth creators etc etc. Sometimes even being on the inside of the tent pissing out can't be tolerated anymore.

Anyone, Stewart included, who gives this arse a veneer of respectability is to be equally despised, I'd be interested to know where his nomination for a Knighthood came from? It reeks of vanity.

And as for this bollocks about paying 50% tax on his earnings, I'll bet my mortgage he doesn't pay anything like that and that his affairs are kept comfortably afloat offshore somewhere, like the rest of the Labour Party's 'supporters'.

And do you know what? I'm all for elitism, I'm all for money grabbing bastards getting into power and permanently removing the terminally incapable from ever going near national government again. I'm all for a class ridden society where people are bred to lead and the silly little Marxist's are confined to local politics where if they want to argue about where to put a bus stop, they can. Just so long as they never get elected to do anything of importance.

And most of all, I can't wait for a proper class war to start again, I can't wait for ghastly common little people to march up and down the country demanding their 'rights' and mung beans, I can't wait for the Police to be unleashed on those who did so much to ruin my once great country a la the miners who were too stupid to realise they were making themselves redundant without any help from anyone else. I don't give a shit about single mothers living in damp council houses with their multi-fathered offspring, I don't give a toss about community centres for asylum seekers, I couldn't give a flying fig for faith groups getting lottery money to build places to radicalise stupid immigrant children who blame me for everything wrong in their miserable bitter little lives, don't like it? Catch a boat somewhere else then. I do give a toss about old people dying in their houses because they can't afford to turn the heating on. I do give a toss about people being beaten on the streets outside their own homes by thugs who should be in prison but are not because they been given a tenth chance to go straight. So on and so forth.

I can't wait to see the looks on the faces of the cabinet on polling night, as person after person is given their marching orders, I can't wait for the whole of cards to come crashing down, I can't wait to see a broken Gordon Brown leaving Downing Street a trembling wreck of a man who will go to his dying day utterly broken.

I can't bloody wait mate. It's because everything that made this country great drove Labour mad, the rule of law, the great institutions of state, the structure of the United Kingdom itself and decentralised governance, the church, the monarchy, our armed forces have all been eroded and broken down by the politics of envy and some misguided social experiment based upon hatred for everything that actually worked for the UK, so I for one will dance on the grave of this festering sore of a government and despise anyone who supported such shite as foisted upon us, Stewart included. I will despise anyone who votes for them because you are part of the problem with all your silly little outdated ideas of what the Tories represent. What you are is scared, scared that your dreams of socialist utopia and government control over everything is about to be trampled upon and consigned to ridicule and resentment for the next 20 or so years. I can't wait. I hope the police come crashing through Labour supporters front doors the day after the GE and arrest them all for treason. I'd love to see that. I'd love to see Blair and Brown before a war crimes tribunal. I'd love to see Stewart's support for them then.

In all seriousness however, as long as what the Tories do is lawful, bring it on, time to start looking after the people of the UK first because that is the first duty of any UK government. And looking after the people of the UK is about knowing what's best for them, what's best is to stop, forever, these arseholes from ever going anywhere near us again.

You've done it now, my blood pressure has gone through the roof !!!

Have you ever watched PM's Qs? Gordon Brown will never handle live debates...

And I can see why you'd think the Conservative Party are elitist, after all the last two conservative prime ministers came from working class backgrounds, and tony blair was privately educated...

oh no wait

Rant that really does not belong in this forum
Why don't you rant about this elsewhere - like the Miscellaneous forum, or perhaps the Neutral Zone? (whichever is more suitable) It does NOT belong in a thread where SOME of us are expressing happy thoughts that somebody we admire for reasons that have NOTHING to do with politics is being honored for his work that also has nothing to do with politics.

Good for you buddy but these are political awards, he wouldn't have got it otherwise, he is a rampant Labour supporter therefore the rant is justified.

What you mean to say it you don't agree and that's just fine.

But his support for the Labour Party facilitated his award, don't be a mug and think otherwise. His politics have destroyed my country.

My pleasure mate, the contempt I have for those who do nothing and wallow in their own misery while blaming everyone else for their woes is vast. The UK is full of them.

Better to laugh at you from afar. I'll ignore the flaming too.

Okay - "buddy" - I hate it when people address me like this, btw. First, I'm not a guy, and second, we're not friends.

Rant against Patrick Stewart's knighthood all you want - IN THE PROPER FORUM!

I've said I don't care about his politics. That doesn't mean I support them. It doesn't mean I'm against them. I'm Canadian, so Patrick Stewart's politics are meaningless to me, unless he turns out to be a Nazi supporter or Holocaust denier.

And what the hell is a "mug" in this context?
