Arise, SIR PATRICK STEWART!

Good grief, why are some people so determined to be negative about everything? Come on, people! It's Patrick Stewart and he's becoming a knight! That's just intrinsically cool. Why take all the fun out of it?

I'm not knocking Patrick Stewart, I just don't understand the whole "knight" thing. It's not like they give him a horse and armor and he patrols the streets at knight saving damsels in distress.

It's just an honor, is all. The British equivalent of giving someone the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

I guess it's a British thing...sort of like how the "Prince" part of Prince Charles means Jack Squat.

It doesn't mean Jack Squat, actually. It means that His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales is first in line to the British throne, that he is entitled to live in a royal palace and to taxpayer support, and that he will become by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of His Other Realms and Territories King, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, upon the death of his mother. It means that upon becoming King of the United Kingdom, he will have access to all classified documents, will be responsible for convening and dissolving Parliaments and calling elections, for appointing Prime Ministers to organize governments in his name, will be responsible for serving as the ultimate check to prevent governments of the day from violating the civil rights and liberties of the British people, will have a responsibility to otherwise always remain politically neutral and impartial (however much he may want to take a stance -- heck, he won't even have the right to VOTE!), will be responsible for representing the unity of the British people and the British state, will have to provide all sorts of public appearances at non-partisan functions in the name of serving the people, will be responsible for meeting every week with the Prime Minister to provide completely confidential and candid advice, and will be responsible for always obeying the Prime Minister's "advice" unless the Prime Minister is advising him to violate the law or the natural rights of his subjects.

In short, the British Monarch must give up control of their lives and receive almost nothing in return. They are obliged to spend their whole lives serving the people yet may never have the sort of power, even over their own lives, that most public servants enjoy. If they do their jobs right, I think it's a very noble thing, even if I disagree with the idea of a constitutional monarchy.

It would seem you know "Jack Squat".

Hey, you guys wanna stop making fun of the British and this honor they bestow their greatest citizens. It's not cool.

And it's now official. Congratulations Sir Patrick.
I wonder will he sign his autographs 'Sir Patrick Stewart' from now on!!!

I was expecting it to be on the news this morning, but no, everyone seemed to be more into the fact that Status Quo were getting OBE's. Patrick just got an also-ran mention in most of the reports I saw.

^ I thought so, but someone in another thread posted a link to a lengthy explanation as to why not. So, I'm not sure.

An honor well deserved! I would also like to thank him for entertaining us endlessly while he earned it.

I'm very happy for Patrick, but people must realise one thing. The man is millionaire Champagne socialist who lives the life of Reilly while financially funding a Government and political party that, through "redistribution of wealth", wants to put everyone in the UK in to poverty.

He's a great actor and very pleasant guy, but politically I have no time for him. If he was true to his convictions, he wouldn't even be accepting his Knighthood.

I was wondering if this puts him on a status where he stops doing conventions and autographs altogether!

He doesn't seem like the type to let that get to his head by any means, but the thought crossed my mind.

Awesome!:techman:

He should start wearing a sword and speaking only in old Shakespearian English!
Yep, I can just see the next TNG movie... Data's cat gets in Picard's way, and Picard has finally had enough:

"Out, damned Spot!"

:guffaw:

"I smite Thee feline from thine house!!"

Sir Ian McKellan

now Charles Xavier is on an even footing with Magneto...

A injoke if they ever do another movie again would be

Mckellan- Good Day sir

^Although since he's actually been the king of England (more than once, not to mention the king of Scotland and the king of Denmark), isn't he a bit overqualified?
Yes, but he also tried to overthrow Queen Mary and put Helena Bonham Carter (Jane Grey) on the throne - and was executed!

It's good they overlooked that indiscretion! :techman:

Come on, isn't that a little bit of hyperbole you're engaging in, there? A lot of people support Labour and for different reasons. He's being given the honor for his acting, and many people have been given the honor for doing less than he has.
