Here is my list of the top 10 Science Fiction movies for 2009.
Making this list this year was very hard, complicated by the juggernaut called Avatar. Without further ado, here is my list.
1. Avatar - Best story and best acting? No! Simply the film that changed everything, Yes! The seamless integration of photo realistic CGI and live action is a marvel to look at.
2. District 9 - Would have been #1 if their was no Avatar. This story simply rips at you, its science fiction at its best.
3. Moon - With a tour de force performance by Sam Rockwell and the use of models and miniatures, this reminds you science fiction can be intimate and far reaching.
4. Star Trek - Without a doubt Star Trek is back and it's loud and infused with rock and roll. T
5. Watchmen - I loved the realistic take on super heros. While I was never a huge fan of the original comic inspiration, I really loved what the filmmaker did here.
6. Pandorum - Many people probably dismissed this as a Alien clone or worst Aliens. If you passed up seeing this because you felt this way, your actually missing out on a very good movie.
7. Surrogates - It's a pretty good movie, with an excellent premiss.
8. The Box - Well acted, strong sci-fi ideas and from the director of Donnie Darko.
9. The Time Travelers Wife - While I never read the book (I do own it, just have never had the chance) The actors are amazing in it, Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams are perfect as the couple who must battle time to be together.
10. Terminator Salvation - This movie had such potential but got mired in familiar "Pre-qual" story telling. I believe this entire movie could have been just a 15 minute intro to the real movie, about the resistance being led by John Connor against the machines. Yet, this is still very watchable but probably not more than once.
