Top 10 Science Fiction movies for 2009

Here is my list of the top 10 Science Fiction movies for 2009.

Making this list this year was very hard, complicated by the juggernaut called Avatar. Without further ado, here is my list.

1. Avatar - Best story and best acting? No! Simply the film that changed everything, Yes! The seamless integration of photo realistic CGI and live action is a marvel to look at.
2. District 9 - Would have been #1 if their was no Avatar. This story simply rips at you, its science fiction at its best.
3. Moon - With a tour de force performance by Sam Rockwell and the use of models and miniatures, this reminds you science fiction can be intimate and far reaching.
4. Star Trek - Without a doubt Star Trek is back and it's loud and infused with rock and roll. T
5. Watchmen - I loved the realistic take on super heros. While I was never a huge fan of the original comic inspiration, I really loved what the filmmaker did here.
6. Pandorum - Many people probably dismissed this as a Alien clone or worst Aliens. If you passed up seeing this because you felt this way, your actually missing out on a very good movie.
7. Surrogates - It's a pretty good movie, with an excellent premiss.
8. The Box - Well acted, strong sci-fi ideas and from the director of Donnie Darko.
9. The Time Travelers Wife - While I never read the book (I do own it, just have never had the chance) The actors are amazing in it, Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams are perfect as the couple who must battle time to be together.
10. Terminator Salvation - This movie had such potential but got mired in familiar "Pre-qual" story telling. I believe this entire movie could have been just a 15 minute intro to the real movie, about the resistance being led by John Connor against the machines. Yet, this is still very watchable but probably not more than once.

What are your top 10 Sci-Fi movies of 2009?

I saw four times the amount of newly released sci-fi films this year compared to previous years.

Which is to say I saw four (that's sad, isn't it)?

Moon, District 9, Avatar, and I forget the name of the other one. It had what's his name, the guy from the Lord of the Rings in it. Moon was the best of the four.

1. Star Trek
2. Avatar
3. Moon
4. District 9

Didn't care for anything else. I thought Pandorum (except for the ending), and Terminator Salvation were mediocre.

Good list except for T:S (crap) and Time Traveler's Wife (book was better, movie was more "time travel inconvenienced my marriage")

Struggled to come up with 10 sci-fi movies I've seen this year so I added vaguely sci-fi movies as well.

1. District 9
2. Knowing
3. GI Joe
4. Transformers 2
5. 2012
6. Star Trek
7. Avatar
8. Surrogates
9. Terminator: Salvation
10. Watchmen

1. Avatar: simply beautiful, breathtaking movie experience

2. Star Trek: great restart of a tired franchise

3. 2012: yeah I know - brain dead and impossible plot, but you gotta love the epic destruction!

Of the Sci-Fi(ish) -- if we're considering Watchmen to be sci-fi, for example -- films I saw in '09, here's how I'd rank them.

1. Star Trek
2. Watchmen
3. Avatar
4. District 9
5. Transformers 2
6. Terminator: Salvation
7. GI Joe
8. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus...;)

1.Star Trek
2.District 9
3.Terminator Salvation
4.Surrogates
5.Transformers 2
6.Pandorum
7.Moon
8.G.I. Joe
9.2012
10.Knowing

Based on pure enjoyment, mine would be-

1. Watchmen
2. Avatar
3. The Time Traveller's Wife
4. Paranormal Activity
5. Zombieland
6. Triangle
7. The Box
8. Terminator Salvation
9. Carriers
10. District 9 / X-Men Origins: Wolverine

(Couldn't decide between the last two)

I don't think I saw ten sci-fi movies last year.

I haven't seen Avatar or Moon, but intend to do so.

I loved District 9, Surrogates, and Star Trek.

Terminator: Salvation was okay. The ending was stupid, but the rest of it was pretty good.

In No Real Order:
9
Avatar
GI Joe
Moon
Star Trek
Surrogates
Terminator: Salvation
Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen
Watchmen
X-Men Origins: Wolverine

1. Avatar: simply beautiful, breathtaking movie experience

2. Star Trek: great restart of a tired franchise

3. 2012: yeah I know - brain dead and impossible plot, but you gotta love the epic destruction!

Those would be my top 3 and in that order for all the same reasons.

I thought it had that guy from the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers in it? :p I've seen those four, and enjoyed each (although District 9 had the Nigerian problem), and agree that Moon was the best.

I've also seen X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Watchmen, and Terminator Salvation. None of those films were very good. I have moderate hopes for The Box, no hopes for Surrogates, and will do my best to avoid ever seeing Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. Joe.

You mean Viggo Mortensen in The Road?

That's possibly sci-fi, it's in a post-apocalyptic future.
