Day of the triffids

Just seemed like he woke up on the plane and thought "I'm gonna be a complete and utter bastard from now on."

I got that, too. This is one of the things I dislike about BBC drama: I just don't get the motivation of the characters so often.

If he was the sort of person to seize the main chance, I doubt that he'd have been travelling in Economy/Coach to start with.

I think they may have just been going for he was just a bit of a psycho, but if so they didn't even pull that off well. Although I wouldn't say it's a particular problem for BBC drama, it does seem to be a problem for programmes that want quick and easy good and bad guys. I think it might have worked better as a 5 parter like Torchwood, or Criminal Justice rather than a 2 part mini-series.

I'm about 2/3rds of the way through part one. Its an interesting situation. Though the first part does feel as if they're jumping on the zombie apocolypse vibe. and the thought of the sighted basically enslaved as human seeign eye dogs is downright terrifying. I'll be interested to see how it all pans out.

It probably helps that I don't know who Eddie Izzard, apart from the name. To me he just seems like a poor mans Tim Curry. Haven't gotten a good look at the Triffids yet. At the moment they appear more like giant moving Aloe plants. I definately need to check out the 90's version. I never saw it, but I do recall pictures of the Triffids. They were designed more like a cross between an orchid and a carnivorous pitcher plant.

I know its not a perfect adaptation, but as an American viewer I can't help but be impressed. I seriously doubt you'd see a story like this attempted here in the states. The BBC seems to be the only place to find half-decent SF programs anymore.

Okay just finished part one. Wow, it took like ten minutes for everything to turn into a fascist dictatorship. And I see they've given the Triffids a similar flower to the 90's versions.
I swear I'm really getting a Doctor Who vibe from all this. Replace the Professor and Jo with the Doctor and a companion, have them forceably seperated partly through the story (Dalek Invasion of Earth?). Add an evil mastermind, and an alien menace and you've got a classic Hartnell or Troughton story.

^Have you seen any of the recent remake of Survivors? It's definitely the better post-apocalypse show.

Not yet. Though now that you mention it, I'll track it down and give it a go.
Y'know, for years I've been a big fan of zombies films. Though lately I'm actually more a fan of end-of-the-world stories in general. (excluding crapfests like 2012).

If you like it, series 2 of Survivors is starting on the 12th.
