The End Of Time Part 1 - Comment & Grading SPOILERS

Wasn't this episode written at the beginning of the year? Before Obama took office and when the economic crisis was at its highest? It would explain the way people behaved, although it dates the episode...

I don't think it's a timing issue. When I say this it will probably sound disrespectful but it isn't meant to, but I don't think that people in the UK would put that much regard into what a US President has to say. With the US news broadcast and the constant commenting about Obama, it's almost like the UK has become some kind of quasi-USA in the Whoverse. I find it a bit odd, actually.

Kinda befuddled how they're bringing in the scenes with Sarah-Jane, Rose, Jack and Verity that have been leaked about...
I'm currently torn between two possibilities.

They're regeneration hallucinations. In past regenerations, the Doctor has relived the adventures of that life before it ends.

The Doctor is getting to say goodbye, in a way, to the people he will actually never meet or who will never know him because history is getting rebooted.

Halfway between, I think - he'll get the chance to say goodbye to his friends, as acknowledgement that they're part of who he is.

In the Whoverse I cant see the UK government having any authority on the world stage, or much respect from its people (wonder if they ever got around to the expenses scandal ;) ), it might be that people really do feel like they have got a better chance with Obama as part of the US, than as part of the UK, that said why not plumb for help from the EU rather than the US?

Could the UN have come in and declared UK government unfit*, and Obama is acting as a temporary leader until one can be found?

* can the UN do that?

I do agree with you there. I suppose there is the timing thing to take in to account, it was written and made early in the year so it could just have fallen in to the trap of trying to be relevant. But unless there's something to come of it later it just doesn't seem in anyway realistic that anyone would believe Obama could come up with an instant fix for the world economy, especially not in Britain with our general outlook on everything.

Holy shit! That's all I have to say right about now...

Well, except...

Still, it irritated me the people were like niavely talking about Obama curing the economy and everything. People just don't talk that way in my experience.

I got the impression some people were saying that in jest, especially the two homeless guys in the beginning.
On the other hand, while the Obama euphoria has died down considerably (and so has the recession panic), I do know people for whom talking like that about Obama and politics in general wouldn't be out of character. Not everyone's a cynic, you know... ;)
Besides, if Obama announced he'd tell the world how to solve some imminent, important problem, I believe people would listen to that and talk about that. Usually, politicians word what they say very carefully so something like that would get noticed and be talked about.

By the way: What does anyone else thinks is the explanation of Wilf's involvement. Is he maybe a Timelord turned into a human?

Oh, and I mean to say earlier, people talked about Heath Ledger being a brilliant Joker, and he was, but Simm kicks the crap out of him...

I ... uh ... what the hell was that?

What the fuck did I just watch? Seriously, it's like Davies just decided - "Fuck it! I'm going out, am I? Well, I'm going out with a motherfucking shit! And not just any shit, a monster turd that will clog up the drains so tightly that even my incredible ability to create plots looser than an escaping elephant on laxatives couldn't shift this."

I can't even call this bad. It's just

I was fucking drunk when I watched it but now thinking back and reading comments...it still makes no fucking sense.

The Master has followers and there was a "book of Saxon" and Lucy made some potion that was supposed to kill him but instead gave him lightning powers and the ability to fly and a hunger for chicken...or something?

There was a load of old people in it for no other reason than so June Whitfield could touch the Doctor's bum.

OBAMA? WHAT?

I like Wilf at least and Timothy Dalton is my hero.

But still...WHAT?

And I read so many (spoiler free) reviews saying "no honestly this episode is GENUINELY GOOD AND AMAZNIG" but...

You know, normally I just go along with RTD's big crazy finales... he writes really good dialog and the character portrayals are usually enough to keep me smiling and nodding though the silliness. But this was just a bit much for me. I enjoyed the 10th Doctor as always, and Wilf and the Master (ignoring the fact that he has superpowers now apparently) were fun to watch as expected... but no. It wasn't enough this time.

It's just ridiculous. Think about it, right now apparently Sarah Jane has turned into the Master. So has Gwen. So has Martha. So has Mickey. So has every single other character we've ever met. So has every two year old still in diapers (not an image I particularly relish, there). What's going to happen? At the end, everything will go back to normal and no one will remember because it would be too ridiculous for them to keep any sort of real consequences from this absolutely crazy scenario. It's just a retread of Last of the Timelords with a new coat of paint. Normally I just happily go along with whatever RTD does, but this is just nonsensical.

I actually have a horrible theory about how this is going to get resolved. I also have a sinking feeling that this will happen.

The Doctor's body will get shot up to fuck, so badly that it's beyond the state of regeneration. The Doctor will put all his regeneration energy into a dying Donna, transferring himself into her, and then she'll regenerate into 11.

RTD will think this is brilliant, because it mirrors the Master taking over humanity's bodies, and he gets to sort of kill off the Doctor at the end of his reign. It will also solve the regeneration limit, and he'll be very proud of himself and look smug on Confidential. Everybody else will cry.

The scariest thing about that is...to a madman, that makes sense.

God help us all.

Whoa. Don't quite know what to think of that yet....

Erm, ok. Now, I'm not an expert on Classic Dr Who, but what the hell does a species whose crowning achievement throughout creation is MASTERING TIME AND SPACE need with a fucking prophet? Doesn't that go against every rule in Universe and for the sake of telling a story that you can think of?

If you think about it, it's a parallel to Dalek-Caan. Dalek-Caan became the Daleks' insane prophet, and here we have an insane Time Lord Prophet. RTD could be going for some Manichean dualism thing, with the Time Lords and the Daleks as mirror images of one another.

Indeed he is, very obviously.

I'm just waiting for GB to go in meltdown when they figure out
works as the fucking Pythia from the books as well as the parallel to Dalek Caan...

But why sacrifice the integrity of the story for a shallow parallel that only says in big fat comic sans font "TIME LORDS ARE BAD MMKAY?!" when its quite evident they're not all happy go lucky because their leader just vaporized someone for questioning him? It just seems like a pointless parallel to me.
