Nice. I love that this movie is doing so well. It is a great example of a heavy effects film actually having a good story.

I noticed on BOM that Avatar beat the Star Trek opening wkd (3day) imax record.
Avatar: $9.5 Million - 178 Screens
Star Trek: $8.5 Million - 138 Screens
Considering all the 3D Avatar hype stuff I am suprised it only just managed to out-do Trek. Infact on a per screen basis Trek wins 61,594 vs 53,370 . I suppose the weather might be a factor however I think this means the studio needs to ensure that Trek gets 4-Weeks or more in IMAX rather than a paltry 2. Its also interesting to note that Transformers 2 was unable to beat the 3-day IMAX total Trek did.
Infact I think they should take a leaf out of James Camerons book and release it this time in 2012 so that it can keep IMAX for itself like Avatar is (3 months). Clearly there is money to be made this time of year.

Transformers 2 didn't beat Trek's record because it opened on a Wednesday and made almost $4 million from IMAX screens on Wednesday/Thursday. If it has opened on Friday, it probably would've beaten it, but some business was spread out over its 5-day opening weekend.
As for Avatar, it probably was a combination of weather and lack of urgency since there are 3 months to watch it in IMAX. Also, I bet since it was the last weekend before Christmas, some people didn't want to pony up the price for the tickets, which are up to $18.00 in LA.
Trek 2 is going to be a monster. All signs point to a 350m+ Gross
The only thing I can think is that there wasn't as an urgency to see it on IMAX since it had about 4.5 weeks in IMAX, whereas for Trek they made a point to advertise the two-week engagement.
I haven't seen it yet, but a friend who DID manage to catch it said it's one of the better James Cameron movies. I might wait until it's out on DVD in a few months or so but I WILL see this thing and fairly soon! It's been getting nothing but good reviews!
This is definitely a film that needs to be seen in IMAX 3-D. I would highly recommend not waiting until it comes out on DVD.
Probably not. They should market it better. The villain was actually really good, and pretty dark, which I thought made the film a little more adult than a lot of the non-Pixar animated films that have come out this decade.
Not that strange...Trek has never really appealed outside the US except in English-speaking countries and Germany.
Avatar now has $393 million worldwide, and set a Christmas Eve record. At least it's a good movie...seeing New Moon at $659 million worldwide makes me sad.
It is strange due to the good reviews it gets from everyone, just cause it hasn't appealed doesn't mean anything cause its nothing like old Trek. The suits at Paramount will need to do some thinking.
Well, if there's no brand awareness or major A-list stars, both key factors in the international market, than it isn't going to have any impact on international audiences.
Well Avatar will soon pass Star Trek which we all expected.

Just to make a point that it is possible to grow the international numbers the next movie should have Tom Hanks and Will Smith in it.

I think Abrams himself has said they should get a big star to help with the overseas box-office so maybe they will get someone.
Abrams did try to get Russell Crowe and Matt Damon for this movie but ended up with Eric Bana and Chris Hemsworth.
I think Tom Hanks is required but I think he will be busy with the next Dan Brown book.
On the subject of Avatar I think its going to do over $500 million in NA and another $800 million overseas, its a monster. Infact at this stage I would not be surprised if it beat Titanic, an awesome feat for a Sci-Fi movie.
