The Final Ongoing Star Trek Box Office Thread

Well, true... it's all subjective. I suppose if people like the whole Twilight thing, then hey, whatever. Not my cup of tea, but if they enjoy it, then more power to them. But I must admit, my competitive side just wants my movie (by which I mean Trek of course) to do better. ;)

Oh, and even though I said it's all subjective, that doesn't apply to Transformers: ROTF -- it was crap. And that's not opinion... it's fact. :p

:eek: Early estimates put "New Moon"'s midnight opening at around $23-24 million. That's just for shows after 12:01 am last night.

I noticed some theatres around here showing it at 10:00 pm last night. If a fair number of cinemas did that instead of (or in addition to) midnight showings, it could partially explain those gargantuan figures.

But either way, damn... that's quite a haul. Looks like we might be out of the domestic Top 5 sooner than I thought. :borg:

Are you sure it was New Moon. I don't think there were any pre-midnight showings. 2,000 theatres did show one showing of Twilight last night, but that's not added into New Moon's total.

^^^^^^
Yeah, I was just about to mention that. When I saw that the first Twilight was actually #2 at the box office on Thursday, I realized it was that one that had the 10:00 pm showings, not New Moon. I just kind of glanced at the showtimes, and I guess I misread it. My bad. Yes, New Moon only had midnight showings... which makes its performance all the more impressive.

Well, New Moon has now hit another milestone: not only did it reach new heights in the realm of midnight showings, it has now broken the record for opening day gross: $72.7 million. The previous champ was last year's The Dark Knight, which brought in $67.2 million on its opening day.

Unless it has extremely weak legs, it's gonna overtake Star Trek's domestic haul fairly soon.

UHG!!!:klingon:

It will have extremely weak legs. Just look at how the first one did. More than half the opening weekend gross came on the opening day. This one should be even more frontloaded. Probably even more frontloaded than Watchmen. I would still bet on it grossing less than $300 million domestic. But yes, it'll beat Star Trek, and bump it out of the top 5 domestic for the year.

If New Moon does top $302 million, to surpass HP6 for #2 on the year (and if Avatar ends up grossing below $300 million), then the top two grossing movie of the year would be Transformers 2 and New Moon. Would that set some kind of record for "worst reviewed top two movies at the box office in a year"?

I'd consider it more like a sign of the apocalypse myself. ;)

Yeah, don't feel bad. Star Trek had Box Office and Critical success. Movies like Twilight will make money, but critically, they're as good as gossip rags.

J.

New Moon is gonna go close to Titanic, say what you will about the Trek fanbase but the Twilight fanbase has grown shit loads since the first one cause of the hype. No offense to women, but the majority of you guys are fucking rabid when it comes to this shit.

Update for New Moon (if anyone's interested): $140,700,000 domestic estimate for the weekend; $258,800,000 worldwide estimate. Not quite record-breaking, but still very impressive.

It won't get anywhere close to Titanic. It'll be way too frontloaded for that.

Though I went a little overboard in my earlier post on this. Yes, it'll be frontloaded. Yes, it looks like more than half of the opening weekend gross came on Friday. But that Saturday drop actually wasn't as bad as I expected.

Yes, I do now think it'll probably gross over $300 million, and likely end up as the #2 movie of the year after Transformers 2. (giving 2009 the new record for disconnect between critical acclaim and box office success?)

I don't see the appeal either, but then, I'm not a teenage girl lusting after Robert Pattinson. :p Exit polling indicated that 80% of New Moon's audience was female, and 50% was under the age of 21.

In other box office news, 2012 took a bit of a tumble this weekend domestically, but it held strong enough overseas to lift its worldwide total to $449,321,000. That makes it the 7th highest-grossing film of the year thus far on the global level -- meaning Star Trek has been knocked down to 9th. :sigh: And given New Moon's progress, I'd expect it to eclipse Trek (no pun intended) very soon as well.

New Moon could reach Titanic levels cause of its target audience.

It depends on how much repeat business there is. "New Moon" performed very similarly to "Twilight" in terms of its Saturday and Sunday declines. If it performs similarly over the long haul, it will probably do well over $300 million but not anywhere near "Titanic".

twiligh? the series that literally bastardized vampires????

im sorry, I have a complete dislike for that incomprehensible pile of steaming rubbish, sufficed to say i think all 3 grudges were more entertaining

and grudge was the definition of bad.. next would be lake placid 2.

I wonder if these werewolves, wag their tails.. and sit and roll over.

yes. I'm quite angry with twilight. my gf told me it was awesoem and scary, here i was thinking i was going to see an actually good horror for once

what did i get? a chick flick with vampires that sparkle... not burst into flames in the sun.

^I have nothing against the "Twilight" series. I have no intention of watching them (and the Twi-hards are a little crazy/scary), but I can recognize why they're popular with its target audience.

FYI, the final number for "New Moon" was underestimated by over $2 million...$142,839,137.

Worldwide total at over $260 million. And this movie only cost $50 million!
