YOU! The Contrarian

I just saw and loved "Take Me Out to the Holosuite," and I don't like baseball. I'm assuming others don't like the episode, because it's so goofy.

As some of the others have said, I really have a hard time getting through "The Visitor".

But many others like it and say it is like the best episode.

Here's my Trek-fan political incorrectness:

I'm not as keen on ship battles as most fans. They're okay for moving the story along, but I don't goo my pants every time they do an effects shot.

I adore the first two seasons. Sure, many episodes have a slower pace, but some rival the other series as far as weighty material to think about.

I'll freely admit I liked "Move Along Home" on its first airing and again on subsequent viewings. It was really Quark's first big episode, and it was an interesting, very non-Starfleet struggle to show him agonizing on what to do with these lives he barely knew.

Another vote for The Assignment, Let He Who is Without Sin... and Fascination.

I absolutely HATE In the Cards and still to this day have trouble figuring out what other people see in it - aside from it being a 'Jake loves his Daddy' episode.

Loved Vic. Wished they'd introduced him (and Ezri) sooner.

Enjoyed Weyoun but thought that they used him too much - Would have enjoyed seeing more Vorta besides him.

Also, it goes against popular opinion I know - but in my book, Garak is straight.

^We want Iggy Pop! We want Iggy Pop! LOL!

Do other people dislike Vic? My wife and I really dig that cat. Are we contrarians for liking Vic?

I thought almost everybody liked Vic. Me, I like him OK...but only in small doses.

I think I'm a little burned out on the whole sentient hologram thing, really.

I'm a little on the fence about "Far Beyond the Stars". I enjoy about 75% of the episode, but I think the scenes right at the end where Benny goes crazy and Sisko does a monologue are some of the worst things I've ever seen on Star Trek. As bad and infuriatingly annoying as some of the most atrocious junk in season 3 of the original series. I think it's a good episode with some of the worst closing scenes (and Avery Brooks' worst acting) in all of DS9.

One episode I will always have a major soft spot for, that most people seem to hate, is "Move Along Home." I went into more depth as to why in my review thread (which I HOPE I'll be up to updating more once peak season is over at work!), but I think it's partly childhood sentimentality at work. That said, there WERE a lot of other great moments in it, too. Was it silly? Yes...but somehow it WORKED.

Another that I just love that a lot of people seem to dislike because it's Dukat and the Pah-Wraiths is "Covenant." Man, Marc Alaimo SELLS this one. He definitely did his homework when it came to cult leaders, and he played the role to perfection.

One that I DO NOT like is "Far Beyond the Stars" because Avery Brooks goes and ruins it at the end. Plus, it feels a bit ham-fisted at times (in combination with Sisko's attitude in "Badda Bing," which involved some really bad writing that ignored the ramifications of Vic's sentience in addition to being wrong for the reasons Kasidy pointed out).

However, I WILL give credit to the novelization of Far Beyond the Stars, which I think works better for some reason.

I also notice that I'm a contrarian for liking Ferengi episodes, little did I know.

Actually that isn't true if this board a year ago is any indication. We did a thread on how people generally felt about the Ferengi episodes last year and by 2 to 1 people here were positive about them as a whole.

We also had a similar result, 2 to 1 in favour of the mirror universe episodes.

Also found a list that put together the least favourite episode of each season as voted by people here and they were:
Move Along Home
Sanctuary
Meridian
The Muse
Let He Who Is Without Sin...
Profit and Lace
The Emperor's New Cloak

In the end "Let He..." narrowly won the least liked of the least liked award over "Profit and Lace".

Of those episodes I don't mind "The Muse" and "Profit and Lace"...visually I'm also a fan of "Let He Who Is Without Sin...", so that's my contrary views if this list is still an accurate measure of this board.

I don't mind "Let He Who Is Without Sin...". I had no idea it was so hated until I saw this forum. So, I guess that one makes me a contrarian.

I hate Mirror Universe episodes, though. I like some of the Ferengi episodes, but overall I think the show would be better off without most of them.

I absolutely love "Life Support", even if it isn't exactly one of the most popular episodes. Definitely Top 10 material to me. It rarely seems to be one of anyone's favorite episodes. The ending is very sad and moving. I don't care about Bareil, but this episode is brilliant. I also like "Time's Orphan". People think of it as a bad episode, but I like it.

I don't care about "Far Beyond the Stars". Perhaps it is because I have no real experience about racism. "In the Pale Moonlight" also isn't one of my favorite episodes. It's a good episode, but doesn't make it into my Top 10.

Ties of Blood and Water has to be in my Top 10. Never done a Top 10, but when I saw how quickly that one fell during the hurt/heal game, it surprised me.

Also Wrongs Darker than Death or Night. I don't care what people say about it--I thought it was excellent.

TOBAW is in my top 10, too - although I always have a hard time making a top 10, since I have so many favorite episodes... It's one of the episodes that made me teary-eyed.

I liked WDTDON, too. What do people say about it? OK, it is a massive retcon, but it doesn't really contradict anything we had seen before. I think some people had a problem with the time travel aspect, but I don't see why - we'd have to write off about 30% of all Trek episodes on that grounds, I never had a problem with it as a storytelling mechanism, and in this case, for once it didn't end up creating any paradoxes.

I like Life Support as well, I think that that episode and Past Tense marked the point when Bashir really turned into a great character.

Speaking of Ties of Blood and Water, Second Skin rarely seems to show up on lists of the most popular DS9 episodes, but it would make my top 5 no problem.

Oh, i'm also reminded that....

I like "Duet", but I find it hard to see how it could be considered DS9's best or second best episode. The scenes between Kira and Harris Yulin's character (can't remember the name) are excellent, and Sisko and Odo are also really strong as wise administrator/leader and "impartial justice minded security chief" respectively, but there were certainly other stronger eps.

I also don't like Damar that much, and I find Casey Biggs acting a bit irritating (i do appreciate, on an objective and visceral level, what was done with him in The Final Chapter though).

I also like Garak, but he's definitely NOT my favorite recurring character in the series. Might not even be in the top 5.

And oh, I prefer Jadzia over Ezri. A LOT.

This doesn't make you a contrarian. A poll on this forum showed that the majority prefers Jadzia to Ezri, although the margin was not that large (72:64). (Interestingly, even though Jadzia beat Ezri in the popularity poll, Ezri won the Sexiest DS9 character poll. But still lost in the overall Sexiest Trek character poll, even though she was leading for a long time.)

It seems that they're neck to neck in popularity in this forum, but I've never seen that many Ezri fans as here. Before I joined this forum, I was never aware that Ezri was that popular to even challenge Jadzia.
