James Cameron's Avatar: Discuss/Countdown

So apparently while this was advertised as coming out here in Australia tomorrow (Thursday), it's actually out today. I looked at the showtimes, and saw that there were Wednesday times listed, so I checked with the theater, and yes, they are playing it today, so I bought a ticket. So I'm leaving in a few minutes to go see the movie.

I will try to to post my reaction after I get back, though my internet connection has been a bit flakey, so that might have to wait until tomorrow.

I don't see the reason for the hype.....this movie looks like Terminator meets a Pixar movie. Terminator = awesome. Pixar = not so much. Looks pretty stupid, tbh.

YEAH, I SAID IT.

Alright!

I guess that means that someone should start an "Avatar reactions and grading" thread soon...

Based on the reviews I've read and listened to, I realize it's because of the special effects. Everyone seems to agree that the movie's plot is basically crap, but it just looks great and is competently directed, so that's how it goes.

It's basically Transformers, but premiering in December so that it becomes more "artistic" than typical blockbuster fare.

I really hope not. I hated Transformers. And its sequel. Avatar seems to have a lot more substance, and spectacle you can actually appreciate. The jumbled mirage of images & loud noise is not spectacle, and I'm looking at you, Transformers.

Devin Faraci's review of Avatar is online and as expected he does not give an endorsing review -- it is not wholeheartedly negative (6.5 out of 10) but not overwhelmingly positive either. He basically praises the special effects, but says the story and characters are weak and generic. So, basically, what you just said firehawk12, but he doesn't choose Transformers as a comparison -- in fact he says it is much better than that -- but he actually uses Peter Jackson's King Kong as comparison. He says both are overbloated, relying simply on visuals, and will quickly be forgotten over time.

You know, King Kong is probably the better comparison. You have the hype of a big director doing an expensive pet project which focuses more on the spectacle than on the story.

They can be fine movies and I'm sure I'll watch this over the holidays, but it seems like the story is taking a huge back seat to all the technology. God, now that I think about it, it's the video game problem.

I love how, in the space of a day, his review has accumulated 176 comments. He's like the Tachy of movie critics.

He even said something positive about Gamer. I can't hate him now.

Michael C. Hall looked pretty cool in the trailer of that movie. And he was playing a villain, good call.

There, I too can say something positive about Gamer. That and I really liked the premise, although - *spoilers*! - I haven't actually seen the movie.

...that's a spoiler in the sense it renders my comments sort of moot.

Time for more mathmagic:
Michael C. Hall in Dexter > Stephen Lang in Public Enemies.

Ergo, Gamer has better villain!

Don't.
Gamer sucks hairy monkey balls.

Unless you want to see Amber Valletta's ass. Lot's of nice views of it.

Yeah, it was a pretty terrible movie, but at least it was entertaining. I don't mind watching a bad movie as long as it doesn't bore me.

Neither do I , but I must say Gamer also bored me, so for me it was an all around failure.:p

Judging from the review I just read, that seems fair. 'Read' is a generous term here. I know my prose has a loose concept of grammar and tends to run on and on in overlong sentences (that abruptly and for no reason end in parentheses - seriously, how did I graduate from a school with this nonsense writing style?), with reams of completely unnecessary big words hurled in to make me seem smart...

To be fair, your style is more of less stream-of-consciousness, which is typical for forum posts. Perfect grammar isn't as important as having a train of thought that one can follow in BBS posts, which is why it's okay to have parentheses after each sentence, as they serve the function of adjacent side notes or post script without the distraction of either interrupting reading or writing flow.

Now, as for White's "style"; he doesn't have a consciousness, so the result is just a stream...of verbal diarrhea.

I concur with this assessment -- Gamer was a piece of crap, and not even a reasonably entertaining piece of crap. Although Michael C. Hall as the bad guy was half-decent, in a "scenery-chewing villain" sort of way. The dance number he did near the end was just so out-of-left field, I couldn't help but laugh.

As for Avatar, a few months ago I was a bit wary, but I find myself looking forward to it now. Here's hoping it doesn't disappoint.

Well, I wasn't planning to.

Or rather I was - I had intended to watch the movie if it got good reviews... and it didn't, which is no doubt why Armond White deems it praiseworthy.

That and dyslexia, which is my wonderful fall-back yet completely true excuse for inept writing. :)

But yes, seriously, White has no business being published with that sort of prose. Forget his opinions or trollishness here - it's just terrible writing.

That almost makes we want to see the movie now. But really, couldn't Hall have been in a good film or something? (...the Lang role in Avatar?) Bah.

Here's hoping it doesn't disappoint.
Indeed. Been looking forward to this for months. Part of me wants the next Star Trek, as far as that J.J. Abrams spectacular went, but I'll settle for anything fun.
