Bumping this since Avatar has now been released, and it has made quite a splash. Its $77 million opening weekend is comparable to the $79.2 million that Star Trek made after the same amount of time. Will it be able to beat Star Trek's domestic total? We'll have to wait and see. Worldwide, Avatar has grossed $241.6 million (giving it the 9th best global opening weekend ever), so it will certainly surpass Trek on that level fairly soon (as virtually everyone expected it to do).
