James Cameron's Avatar: Discuss/Countdown

As someone who wears prescription glasses, I LIKE the big glasses. The slim-lined glasses I used for the Toy Story double feature were incredibly uncomfortable. They barely fit over my glasses, and the earpieces curved inwards, so they were pressing uncomfortably into my temples.

I rather like the glasses I got for Nightmare Before Christmas a few years ago; got similar ones with Meet the Robinsons. Do the Disney Digital 3D glasses work for other 3D movies? (besides the Monsters vs. Aliens ColorCode-type movies) If so, I think I'll bring my NB4Xmas glasses with me to Avatar, in case they have those tiny glasses again.

Joy

The glasses I had for "A Christmas Carol" were nice, only I wish the glasses filled my whole field of vision it sort-of ruins the experience when I'm aware I'm wearing the glasses by being able to see the frame of them.

I really do hope that the substance that enables levitation isn't called "Unobtainium".
Those battle sequences look so frenetic that I thought this was a Michael Bay movie for a second or two.

It is being informally called "unobtanium" at least in interviews with the film makers. A nice in-joke for SF fans. :) Is it called that in the film? We don't know yet...

FOX has released a completed short action scene (in HD) of 'Avatar' from early in the film, where Jake has his first run-in with aggressive Pandora wildlife...

Warning, SPOILER. Do not watch if you want to see Avatar fresh. :) (if Only I had that strength to avoid spoiling all)

'Thanator Chase': (2m 30s)
Streaming: http://movies.ign.com/dor/objects/800318/avatar/videos/avatar_trl_thanator_chase.html?show=hi
Download: (100mb) http://streamingmovies.ign.com/movies/article/104/1047900/avatar_trl_thanator_chase_wmvhd.wmv

(This is a longer and completed version of a scene shown on 'Avatar day', and also on XBox Live last week)

FYI, Cameron also did two recent interviews, which both feature behind the scenes footage and new clips:
- 60 Minutes Interview
- CNN Interview

Hm. Impressive as a SFX reel (I liked the bit of him out of breath, latching onto a bit of driftwood), but out of context it just seems to be 'hey, monster, run'. I'm none too enthused about the actual content, though I'm sure if I had see the monster scene in the new Star Trek out of context I would have been similarly unamused.

Also a number of 'wow' moments that will clearly play better in theatres, like the look down the waterfall.

I didn't really watch all of it, found it a bit tedious as action scenes like that don't translate well for me without the build-up.

But looked good, this is going to be a fun movie.

Very strange reaction I had to it. It was both better and worse than I expected.

I think, visually, it was a little better than I expected, better than just a World of Warcraft CG cinematic. content wise, it was a little tedious. Maybe because I could never get a great look at the monster, it was just 'generic CG monster flailing and growling'.

Well it is just a 'concentrated' chase-scene without any build-up... It should play quite different in context. (I have seen the minute that precedes it in other leaked/glimpsed footage, so I was not bothered by it)

I am actually trying to go to this movie fresh. I've seen parts of a TV last thursday. That is it. Not even a trailer. I really have no idea what this movie is about.
