Well, I just recently became a fan of Owl City. Their song "Fireflies" is so light and bubbly that it just makes me feel good. It's contagious!

If you like Owl City, have you heard the Postal Service, the band they're imitating?

I'll check them out.
Oh, and it's incredible how some people get so vitriolic! (not you, just reading some of the comments in that link! ).

EDIT (9:51 AM):

Well, I went and listened to about 5 of their songs, and while I do find similarities, I do also note that there is enough of a difference between Postal Service and Owl City that OC is not necessarily ripping off Postal Service, because if we're talking similar synth and instrumentation, then that's a given in electronic music. There are lots of bands that sound very similar.

That being said, I much prefer the audio and harmonic quality of Owl City, as it is much more resonant and upbeat.
Oh, and the people on that page need to take a few Xanax and get a back massage or something.

There are lots of bands that I like...even like alot. But there are very few that I really LOVE - as in, the sort of band where I would buy their albums, sight unseen before I heard a single song from them.

Those bands would be:

1. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
2. Pearl Jam
3. The Tragically Hip
4. Bon Jovi

After these, come a small string of bands I really enjoy alot and would likely buy any record they put out....but in their cases it would not be 'automatic' - I'd want to hear a song or two first. Some of these bands would include Matchbox 20, Three Doors Down, The Sam Roberts Band, Van Halen, REM, U2, Journey, Prince, Crowded House, The Dixie Chicks...and if they were still playing, Queen, The Eagles, and The Police (although The Police, when they were still a band, would have fallen into category #1 above - I used to LOVE them).

But the four bands in category #1 above? They put out a record = I buy it. End of story.

If you add in soloists who used backup bands, I might also include Sting, Garth Brooks, and Dan Fogelberg.

Gravity Kills

You're the first person I've ever known to even acknowledge those guys. Superstarved was an incredible album. Why the hell they split up barely a year after it has always been one of electro-rock's biggest mysteries for me.

One of few groups to pull off a decent Depeche Mode cover.

Yeah, they were good while they lasted. Same with another little known industrial metal/techno band called Psykosonik. I wonder if being involved with the Mortal Kombat movies was a deathblow for them both.

The first time I heard that song I thought it was Death Cab, the singer sounds so much like Ben Gibbard and the music really does sound like something right off Give Up. I have to say, I am very fond of the Postal Service. Give Up meant a lot to me when it came out. I'm not much of a fan of Death Cab, though; I like only a couple of their songs. The Owl City song is listenable, but it is hard to get over how exactly the sound mimics Postal Service.

Too many to list. But at the moment I'm really digging Spock's Beard. Only discovered them a few months ago, and I find them to be highly addicting.

Nothing says "big balls" like bringing 2 Mellotrons and a Hammond on stage.

Other stuff I'm listening to the moment is Dream Theater, King Crimson, old Metallica, Opeth and 60s-to-early-70s Zappa (I listen to Absolutely Free, Hot Rats and The Grand Wazoo daily).

You have good taste, man. I love all this stuff you mention, too. I only discovered Spocks Beard recently myself. I got into Opeth in 2007 and Dream Theater in 08. Have all of their albums now.

If you like all those bands, you should give Porcupine Tree a listen.

Blackest Eyes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GbsF4oh0fM&feature=related

I've been meaning to give Porcupine Tree a listen for quite a while. I love the Opeth albums Steve Wilson worked on, and my friend is obsessed with them. I'll check those links out.

I'm pretty obsessed with Porcupine Tree as well.

I've noticed a lot of crossover between Porcupine Tree fans and most of the bands you mentioned. Opeth, Spock's Beard, Rush, etc.

Huge PT fan here. I heard two of my other favourite bands Opeth and Dream Theater raving about them so I picked up Fear of A Blank Planet last year. Can't believe I overlooked them so long. Now I can't get enough, and own all their albums. I really love Spocks Beard and Rush, too, so your theory seems to be correct!

Maybe I would have been a fan of Postal Service had I heard them first, but by the time I learned of the similarities, I had already listened to the entire discography of Owl City, and had found their music much more palatable and enjoyable.

I actually discovered Porcupine Tree a couple of years ago via a Rush website. There was a long thread in the non-Rush music section about PT, and I finally gave a listen. Blackest Eyes was the first song of theirs I heard.

Now I'm totally hooked. The Incident is awesome, have you heard it? Are they coming to Australia on this tour?

I also want to add Alice in Chains to my list. Dirt is one of my favourite albums ever. Facelift and Jar of Flys have more than their fair share of awesome too.

What did you think of the new album?

I loved it personally, and I think it has a great deal of dignity about it. Plus Jerry has really grown up a lot since the days of Dirt.

I haven't actually heard it all yet, but I really liked the ones I've listened to so far. I plan on getting the album when I get paid next week.

I actually went to see them live in Manchester a few weeks ago (the first time I've seen them since Staley died), and they blew me away. Tight as a duck's arse, and Duvall is a fantastic vocalist. They played a handful of new songs, and the vast majority of the Dirt album. Halfway through the gig, they performed an acoustic set (about 4 songs), which was pure awesome. One of the best gigs I've ever been to.

The new PT is great! They're coming to Oz next year and I really want to go and see them.

The new AIC is very good. A lot better than I was expecting. When I heard they were regrouping with a new vocalist, I'll admit, I was sceptical, but when I heard it, wow. A great disc, and a perfect tribute to Layne's legacy.

I have heard of them for years. Greatest band name ever. I dialed up a sampling on Rhapsody: very tasty. They even have some flute stuff (I play flute along with the other woodwind instruments).
