I love..GAGA!!!

Also, anyone else surprised at how thick of new york accent she still has. People like her usually go through voice training to soften it up.

What do you mean "still"? Why should she lose her accent? It's what we sound like around here.

Its not too unusual for people seeking a career in music to take classes to "purge" their accents. That being said, she definitely seems the type to do her own thing so I'm not shocked she didn't follow that trend

I really like Lady Gaga myself. Her "Paparrazi" song is VERY catchy and I caught myself singing that song in my sleep one time! :guffaw: !!! I also like her "Love Game" song as well as "Poker Face". :) When Mom first saw what she looked like she was like: that girl is WEIRD! And obsessed with dying!(cause at the end of her Paparrazi song, she hangs herself suppossedly at one of her award show thingys)Suffice to say, I liked it but Mom did not.

Her album is catchy clubby dance-pop - fun but nothing I listen to that much. That said, I have huge respect for her artistic vision and her musical talent. I love her acoustic videos on youtube, where it's just her and a piano, playing around with the melodies and rhythms, just belting the songs out. And her live performances - concepts, costumes, everything - are brilliant.

As far as I'm concerned, that's what really separates her from the pack of over-hyped, under-talented pop singers.

Those videos you mentioned, the ones where she's playing the piano beautifully and dialing things down to a more personal, sultry level, are what won me over.

She has real talent -- not just singing, but songwriting, composition and serious skills on the piano. Contrast that with the Britney Spears types, who are so heavily-dependent on Auto-Tune, they can't even do a song live without it.

Don't get me wrong, Euro-flavored club music is not my type of thing, but I can appreciate the talent even the music is not my cup of tea.

While some of her songs are catchy enough, I find Lady Gaga’s shtick incredibly and increasingly annoying - particularly as most of it has been ripped off wholesale from the vastly superior Roisin Murphy.

Even more grating is she carries on like she’s building a legacy similar in status to Bowie or Prince when in reality she’s just the newest stock standard pop singer releasing stock standard pop songs who just happens to have a rather inflated sense of self.

Her debut album is drivel bar a couple of songs. To her credit, The Fame Monster EP is a major step up, but again it’s neither anything musically ground breaking nor worthy of the hype currently swirling around her. After all, she still works with the same song writers and producers Britney, Beyonce, The Pussycat Dolls and The Backstreet Boys work with.

To be honest, I can’t think of a more textbook example of Emperor’s new clothes than Gaga.

She writes her own songs.
She also writes songs for Britney Spears and the Pussycat Dolls, has written for Beyonce, Fergie, and New Kids On The Block, so that would explain the similarities.

She could play the piano by ear at 4 years of age. Her musical talent was so marked that she was supposed to attend Julliard as a child, but instead, she chose to attend a private Catholic school. She eventually went on to attend Tisch School of the Arts in New York.

The Emperor has clothes. Speaking of clothes, what she wears is her own work, as she likes to design different fashions for each performance.

She has substance. She has staying power.

Red One, Darkchild, Teddy Riley: they're all high profile music song writers/producers for hire and they all worked on either The Fame or The Fame Monster (or both) as well as with the artists I mentioned. That would explain the similarities I was talking about. My point is her music is just more of the same.

Now I'm not saying Gaga's not talented or capable, she clearly is. My point is she's nothing new or particularly original and she's certainly done nothing yet to justify the pretense that I find so annoying about her.

Then again, if she did turn out to have one, it wouldn't really suprise me.
I'm not sure it would even deter me.

I have to agree with you there, Jonas.

Wow... you guys actually feel she's that attractive?

ok, who am I to argue? I think she's fugly and relies on her over flamboyant costumes and masks to cover her giant sch'nouzer, but to each their own.

But has anybody else ever noticed...... that yeah, she's apparently into fashion, she apparently writes her own songs...... sounds like what Gwen Stefani was doing years before gaga came to the spotlight.

Take Gwen, toss in Marilyn Manson's shock value, mix in some britney spears sluttiness and throw a bit of Madonna's attention seeking and history of coming from New York in the 80's dance club scene, and you get Gaga.

That's why I can't fathom why she's so special.

But then again I thought Emenim was only going to be a one hit wonder, Vanilla Ice/Snow rip off wanna be too, and he came out to be something all his own...... time will tell I suppose.

Well geez, I've been drawing since the age of four, I was supposed to go to the 1996 Canada Winter Games but took a different path into animation, web design, photo editing, CD ROM development, was class representative in college, I grew up roman catholic.... oh and escaped my own house on my own while it burned to the ground at the age of 9 years..... someone give me a friggin medal.

My point being is that there's millions of people out there with very similar lives, troubles, difficulties, successes, etc. ~ Sure she's the one out there trying to get her name known, and bravo to her for doing so..... but she's average at best........ maybe it's just me but it seems as though people have been fed crap for so many years that when they're given something average, they treat it like gold and think it's the next best thing since the model T.

Added:

Maybe it's because I grew up listening to 60's, 70's and 90's music (interesting how I hated much of the 80's music which I was born and raised in) my parents were into such bands as Black Sabbath, Led Zep, Iron Butterfly, and when I was a teen I got into The Tea Party, I Mother Earth, Edwin, Our Lady Peace, Pearl Jam, Econoline Crush, Matthew Good, etc..... which is all pretty well not her genre.

I do, yes.

I just see different qualities.

The beauty of music and art is that each person can see something unique, something special, where others just scratch their heads in befuddlement. Art is so beautifully subjective that way.

But then again I thought Emenim was only going to be a one hit wonder, Vanilla Ice/Snow rip off wanna be too, and he came out to be something all his own...... time will tell I suppose.

Now see, I'm not a fan of Eminem, so it balances out. ;)

Hey now, no need to be so acidic. No one is comparing you to Lady GaGa. Qualifications aren't necessary to like or dislike her or her music.

I grew up listening to 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's music. It's all about musical choice. You don't have to like her music.

Well I'm not a huge fan either, but I grown to appreciate his stuff and some of it is actually quite funny..... but repetitive after a while.

I wasn't exactly going for a comparison of myself in paticular, just a loose example of why the values given for liking her stuff in my view can be applied to just about anyone. I wasn't saying I am something special, on the contrary.

I grew up listening to 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's music. It's all about musical choice. You don't have to like her music.

I know this and I have said this and I have also said you can like it all you want.... for me, it's about observing people's reasons and justifications for certain things in a topic.... for me, it's not so much who you like, it's why and how.

Just expanding my overall understanding, while providing some of my own understanding at the same time. It's only fair afterall.

Criticism for using producers... check. In this day and age, I can't imagine why that's a valid critique. You want your music to sound as good as possible, so you get people who know how to massage your sound to its full potential. Even those musicians who are good producers in their own right still bring in additional help to produce a good album.

Genre elitism... check. I really don't understand the mentality that you're only allowed to like certain kinds of music. I like a little bit of everything. Hard rock, techno, classical, prog rock, jazz, fusion, house, metal, industrial, crunk, folk, and probably any other genre you could dream up--I dig 'em all. I care about whether I enjoy the music, and don't worry too much about whether it's pigeonholed into a specific genre.

And really, if you like someone's music, you have to think they're the best thing ever? When did that happen? You're not allowed to like music just because you like it? I like some pretty questionable stuff, and I won't arguments for its artistic merit, just that I fucking enjoy it. Lady GaGa is not, at this point, a top-tier musician. Maybe she will be, someday. I don't know. What I do know is that I enjoy what she does here and now, and look forward to more. She has talent, she has style, she's intelligent, she knows how to put on a show, and she's good to her fans. While getting a break in the music business can be pretty arbitrary, she's definitely broken through, and just because there are better musicians out there is no reason to resent her success. By definition, there can be only one that's the greatest in the world. Is that the only person deserving of a recording contract? :p

I do love it when there are always complaints about the lack of talent in pop music, and then someone comes along who has talent--and everybody can see it--and they still fling shit about it. "Well, it's not enough talent!" or "I don't like how she uses it!"

What the hell do you want, people?!

I just got her song SPEECHLESS via Itunes..not the piano version I was hoping for, but still pretty good. I think she actually has a 'strong' voice, not one of those mousy voices that are the rage of the day. And chords in this song are pretty sophisticated in this day and age...

Thumbs up on this song..Speechless

A Pony.

Just because some think someone has talent, or just because someone claims to have talent, doesn't mean they actually do have talent or that it's a universal acceptance that they have talent.

People can determine for themselves if someone has enough talent for their tastes or whether or not they appreciate or like how they use their talent.

You can laugh all you want, I will equally laugh at her and that you're a fan, it matters not to me. The music industry is just that.... an industry. They are in the market of entertainment which also means they're out to get our attention and our money. Just because they make it "Big" in this market, doesn't mean I suddenly should snap sh*t and get in line with everybody else in worshipping her arse or anybody else's arse for that matter.

I don't think she's worth a dime of my money or a minute of my time.... my reasons are my own and your reasons for supporting her are your own as well, and thus, the view on such a subject is quite..... subjective.

But to mock people's reasons for not liking her or her music?

All you're doing is then opening up the debate for others to come back and mock your reasons for liking her and her music..... what goes around, comes around.
