Anyone else notice that when Young returned to Earth to adminster the well-deserved ass-kicking, he tricked the receiving officer who asked him, "Dr. Volker?" to which Young replied, "Yes." Command didn't know it was actually Young, so his chaperone didn't try to keep that person away from Col. Telford. Happened about 40:20 in on the Hulu vid.

One thing I noticed, this episode was rather slow, which isn't necessary bad, just a fact, at 30-45 minutes in I thought the episode should have been over by now, it seemed to last a really long time, felt longer than an 1 hour
Maybe that's because the Earth visits were wrapped up around the 40 minute mark, then we got more things happening.

Bingo. I like that as an occasional novelty. An episode sets up a straightforward plot, which is apparently resolved with an appropriate amount of mischief... and there's still twenty minutes left in the episode to twist on. I feel like I've gotten a bonus hour of the show that week. Crusade's "The Needs of Earth" is another good example.

I gave it a 6. I really don't care for the Earth based storylines, and much prefer the stuff that happens on the ship.
One thing that I didn't get was when the found that chair, they immediately thought that it had something to do with the mind thing. I would have thought that it was an early version of the control chair like the one in the Antarctic, or on Atlantis and maybe they could control the ship now. I don't think that was ever brought up.

My wife had a funny comment... When Wray switched back to her own body, they should have shown that person that she switched with kind of gag a little and then reach in and pull a little hair out of her mouth. I Couldn't believe my wife said that...

Looks like we found the stinker of S1, it's a low point.
Not a bad one, but enough character development already!
We got a lot out of the montages, and canon validation that Icarus was naquadria-powered (see the extended "Stargate Primer" videos from the pilot that are a DVD extra in waiting, IMO)

So far, it feels different from any previous Stargate, but still, Stargate. Its nice that the stones have their quirks (not that they figured out how to turn them off!).

Not "Spock's Brain" or "Threshold" territory, not even "Meridian" or "Facination."
Every series has its sinkers in season 1, so I'm giving this a wide berth. It certainly isn't the best, but if its the worst, that's not bad.

I just want an episode where they don't focus on the characters ON EARTH! Give us an ep where we get a line from TJ saying "Mr Clean and the cook are using the stones" and that's it. We're getting there.

the FTL vulnerabilities (and the havoc they can wreak) and the bleedover will lead to interesting developments down the road.

Well that's the main problem I have with the show. I completely understand that shows have terrible episodes, especially first seasons, but the show is spending so much time and effort on these Earth-based soap opera elements that I think this is what the writers want. The writers are more interested in the Earth-based melodrama over the sci-fi of the Destiny. The first season finale is going to change from a Goa'uld invasion of Earth to finding out that Chloe is pregnant with Rush's child.

Bad episodes I can handle, but I don't think the series and I agree on what is considered a bad episode.

I enjoyed seeing Young beat down Telford, but I am getting tired of the looking for food, water, etc. I don't think we are going to see any aliens on this show at all. Are they ever going to move beyond the search for supplies+soap opera drama? I want some scifi action.

We had aliens last week and also in Air and Water. Short memory.

I want intelligent, non animal type aliens that they can interact with. Some beings that can challenge them, but not be rejects from a Marilyn Manson concert.

I wonder if Eli was really socially inept, or if he was intentionally being a douchebag to Scott.

The latter would make me like the character a little more.

I like character development. I was really struggling to identify with most of the characters until these past two episodes. Now, when one of them runs off on a dangerous mission, I might actually give a crap. When Lt. Scott was in that hole a few episodes back, I didn't care if he died or not. Now, I probably would.

I'm personally hoping that the entire point of the Earth melodrama stories is to show us why the crew may not want to go back to Earth so badly afterall.

Do any of them have a good life to go back to? Eli's mother is dying of HIV. Scott's a father to a chick who had no problem taking his money but has no intention of raising their son properly, and he has no way of really seeking custody. Young's wife is as much a douche as Telford is. Chloe's friends are all shitty human beings just like she is. Rush only wants to be right where he is. And we have no idea what Greer's life is like back there but it's probably going to be in a prison cell since Telford is, in fact, a douche.

The only two mains that might have a reason to go back are TJ and... the human resources chick. No idea what TJ has waiting, but the HR chick has mixed signals about it. On one hand her girlfriend is a hottie and they seemed to have a good life together. On the other her parents are cold-hearted dicks apparently and she's taking part in some kind of conspiracy crap with the Middle Eastern dude.

Yeah, I noticed. And loved it. Telford has crossed a line. He deserved that, and more.

So basically the only aliens you'll be happy with are a return to the old human-in-rubber approach. I'm very happy, actually, that they haven't done that yet. I suspect you'll get your wish fairly soon, though, there aren't many sci-fi shows that can go for very long without doing that.

Mallozzi mentioned on his blog the other day that we're going to get our first sentient aliens early in the second half of the season.

There were parts of this episode I liked, and parts I didn't, so it's hard to give it an overall rating. 6 or 7, maybe?

The Ancient chair is an obvious setup for future episodes, so I'm fine with that. It's even somewhat sensible that no one is allowed to use it right now. Considering how everything goes haywire when they try to make the ship do something, best not to let that genie out of the bottle yet.

The Earth stories. This shit between Telford and Young has got to stop. Where is the fucking chain of command? Their superiors need to kick both their asses. Hell, even temporarily demote Young and put Scott in charge aboard Destiny. Young is a piss-poor leader. I get that he was just riding things out until retirement, but he needs to suck it up and act like he's running this shit. Playing with Ancient stones so he can punch out Telford is ridiculous. Neither Telford nor Young should be "stone-switching" anymore. They clearly can't deal with it like adults, and the brass need to clamp down on them, hard.

Scott's trip was a lot more tolerable. I knew when they showed him talking about the pregnant 16-year-old in the recap that it was going to turn out she had the kid after all. They've made him out to be a generally nice guy who has just made some dumb mistakes, but is trying to make things right. I can certainly respect that. I also like that they didn't just have everyone kiss and make up and have her promise to go to school, make a good life for her and their son, etc. She'll still live her life how she wants, but at least Scott's money might help when things are tight. That's probably the most he can hope for without being there in the flesh.

Camille's story was nice, but... boring. I'm not sure what's wrong with her character, to be honest. She's just not very compelling, and nothing she has done so far has been all that interesting, either. The scenes with her partner just went on way too long. I'm glad they've joined the 21st century and got around to showing a healthy, stable homosexual relationship, but it would be nice if they bothered to make it interesting viewing, too...

I hope we see more consequences to the use of the stones, too. As I see it, the stones have a handful of legitimate uses:

1. Maintaining contact with command on Earth.
2. Allowing the people aboard Destiny some respite from their situation.

#1 should override #2 every time. And #2 should only happen as long as those using the stones demonstrate they can do it responsibly. Young fails that criterion. And all this nonsense should result in use of the stones being further restricted to avoid such problems. I also hope we see more problems emerge from using them, like the memories bleeding over.

The line never would have been crossed if Young had kept it in his pants.

1. Maintaining contact with command on Earth.
2. Allowing the people aboard Destiny some respite from their situation.

3. Bring people with expertise onto the ship...like...I don't know...getting a licensed medical doctor onto the ship during the outbreak of an alien illness (rather than letting the medic handle it)... ;)

Seriously, they repeat that line over and over again about how it's the "wrong people in the wrong place," but they can easily get the right people onto the ship on a near constant basis. They just don't bother.

Forgot that one! But you're right. That one should also supersede any "recreational" use. I think the rec use should be heavily restricted and regulated. That they let some people run around unescorted is inexcusable.

I doubt if they're going to allow anybody to permanently switch minds, they can get a specialist if they need to, but I doubt if there's many earth doctors who could handle a alien plague. Also there's the matter of using the right equipment, which might not be available on Destiny.

What?

That was not Chloe. That was the other horse-faced chick from the psych evaluations or whatever. They showed her face both times. Ignoring that, they also showed us what she was doing while that was going on (ie, exercising on that observation deck).

Horse faced!??!

Glasses for you!
