That, at least, could have made some sense in a way. But no, I guess plotdevicism was more of a concern. Gotta pit Dukat against Sisko in a religious battle of Good vs Evil!

I liked Pirate Dukat. He was my favorite Dukat, followed by Regular Gul Dukat, Crazy Dukat, Cardassian Dictator Dukat, Commandant Dukat, and lastly Religious Fanatic Dukat.

See, I've always felt Dukat actually believed in the Pah-wraiths and his "insanity" had nothing to do with it. He always desired power, such as supporting the civilian uprising on Cardassia and joining the Dominion. The Pah-wraiths gave him power on a greater level.

Bingo. As I've said before, since Sisko is our hero and the appointed figurehead of the good godlike aliens, then Dukat, as our villain, must be the appointed figurehead of the bad godlike aliens so they can duke it out in true Manichean fashion.

That's the big problem about it. What they do with Dukat makes sense for him in his role as the main series villain but makes no sense in the context of who he was prior to that point. Things went wrong with "Waltz", which was an excellent DS9 episode but the one where they decided they'd start preaching to the audience that this charismatic guy some of them actually liked (that he had defenders troubled them) was an Evil, Evil Man.

Honestly we would have been better off with Dukat being written off the show after that episode. And I loved the guy.
