Lieutenant Commander

So I used to have that EW issue from 94 where they ranked all 303 episodes at the time. However, I believe I lost it for good a few years back and I would kill for those ranking lists again. Does anyone here have the issue, and if so could they either like, post the list, or message me? That would kick ass.

Unbelieveably (even to myself) I have the issue. Lemme see if i can scan the list and email it to you.

I don't think i can PM you yet as you are new to the board. Anyway, since there was another request to post the list here, i'll do it that way. I tried scanning the pages but my scanner has a lid that doesnt come off, so it makes it very difficult to get the entire page scanned. Looks like i'll have to type the list up for you, so please give me a little time. I'll post each series as i go along.

In the meantime, this was the cover of the issue you are interested in:

Haha. I'm just a huge list nerd and try to find as many review sources as possible. I remember having this magazine right when it came out. I was like 8 and just getting into Star Trek and loved the list in the issue.

I'll try to dig up a picture...haha.

The Ultimate Computer, Balance of Terror, The Empath, Return to Tomorrow and Day of the Dove should be much higher.

Space Seed is good, but not good enough to be #2. The Deadly Years, The Gamesters of Triskelion, Shore Leave, Plato's Stepchildren and especially Mudd's Women (one of the worst Trek episodes IMO, and far worse than I, Mudd) should be much lower on the list. (Plato's Stepchildren better than Balance of Terror and Is There In Truth No Beauty? Really?)

TNG:

Should be higher:

The Wounded (much higher - I'm shocked where they put it)
Tapestry
Sins of the Father
Reunion
The Defector
The First Duty
Face of the Enemy
Inheritance
The Offspring
Second Chances (not even in the first 100?!)
The Enemy
Attached
Family

Should be much lower:

Cause and Effect - the most overrated TNG episode IMO. Am I the only one who found it really boring and repetitive?
Descent pt 1
Relics - it's nice and I get the nostalgia thing, but there is no way it is in TNG top 10.
Genesis - it was awful. What is it doing in the top 100?

Also, The Best of Both Worlds part 2 higher than part 1? Come on!!

Ok, list for TNG is completed. I have problems with both lists as well, but we have to remember these lists are only the opinion of the author.

Here is what the introduction to the article says:

"We know, we know---there are already enough Trek episode guides to fill a Ferengi freighter: But ours is the first to actually rank all 303 episodes from best to worst. How'd we do it? Our crack Trek-ologists devised a formula so sophisticated (plot + f/x - cheesy costumes divided by number of times Bones says "He's dead Jim!" ) not even supercomputer M-5 could figure it out. In the end, though, there's only one thing to remember: Trek is a little like sex--even when it's bad, its' pretty good."

I'll get DS9 up later. Because this was written in '94, they only get to episode #46.

Well, people are never going to agree 100% on those kinds of lists. Which is exactly why it's fun to read them and comment on them.

You rock, my dear.

Deep Space Nine episodes #1-46 rated best to worst according to EW 1994. Makes me wonder where these would have fallen had the issue been done after all the DS9 episodes aired:

Captive Pursuit
Invasive Procedures
Dax
Past Prologue
Duet
Dramatis Personae
The Nagus
Battle Lines
The Forsaken
In the Hands of the Prophets
The Maquis Pt 2
Rules of Acquisition
Whispers
The Alternate
Blood Oath
Necessary Evil
The Collaborator
If Wishes Were Horses
Crossover
Playing God
Vortex
Cardassians
Shadowplay
Armageddon Game
Tribunal
The Jem'Hadar
The Siege
The Storyteller
The Maquis Pt 1
Sanctuary
Q-Less
Profit and Loss
Emissary, Pts 1 & 2
The Passenger
The Homecoming
Babel
A Man Alone
Second Sight
Progress
Melora
The Wire
The Circle
Rivals
Paradise
Move Along Home

And thats that! Glad to help out Carlmarx. I live to serve!

Yeoman Randi, you're my new best friend.

Christ, that DS9 list is messed up. The Nagus and The Forsaken ahead of Necessary Evil and Whispers? And how is Duet not #1? Captive Pursuit is one of my favorites, but not the best of the first two seasons...

Yeah, that's a pretty weird list. The other two make sense, more or less - even though I have minor objections. But the DS9 list just makes my mind boggle. Dax and Invasive Procedures are apparently also better than Duet, which is only 5th? :cardie: Looking over that list, the only explanation that makes sense is that the people who compiled it were big TNG fans who preferred standalone, TNG-like episodes - especially if they featured TNG characters, like The Forsaken or Q-less - while most arc-based episodes or those who feature shadier characters and storylines more typical for DS9 tend to be seriously underrated on this list. For instance, the Circle 3-parter is very low on the list, and an average, TNG-lite episode like Melora is above The Wire.

Why is Plato's Stepchildren so high, and The Empath so low? I like the latter episode. As for Genesis, what the hell? Why isn't that right at the bottom?
