The College Football Thread

The Ducks are up 44-20 with only eight minutes left. Digits must be most unhappy.

Pretty much, yeah....

:scream:

What the fuck was that? USC had no answer whatsoever for Oregon's offense. Congrats to the Ducks. They deserve it. When was the last time a team racked up 600+ yards of total offense against the Trojans?

I know that USC has lost some games here and there over the years, but I can't remember the last time we got our asses kicked.

And we certainly did that tonight.

Hopefully we can close out the rest of the season and go 10-2, get a decent bowl game, and move on.

There seems to be some hex on the Trojans when they play in Oregon, either the Ducks or the OSU Beavers. Frankly, I expected it to be a lot closer but I learned a long time ago not to underestimate the power that playing at home in Autzen brings to the Ducks.

Well, that makes the Cal loss not seem so bad. Oregon, Pac-10 Champions on the way to the Rose Bowl? Who would have thought after that first game.

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending Saturday, October 31st, 2009

1 – Florida (8-0)

Between this year's UF team and last year's, which one wins? "Where have you gone, Percy Harvin, yo? Our offense turns its lonely eyes to you"

2 – Alabama (8-0)

Sadly, it's starting to look like the Gators/Tide winner vs. Texas, with the other worthies shut out.

3 – Texas (5-0)

At least we haven't had to listen as Mack Brown whines or lobbies yet this year.

4 – Texas Christian (8-0)

That defense is fast and ferocious. I'm not sure any of the top three want anything to do with the Frogs.

5 – Boise State (8-0)

Amazing what a past opponent's win can do for your ranking, ain't it?

6 – Iowa (9-0)

They're playing a very dangerous game, no pun intended. Can they keep rallying late?

7 – Cincinnati (8-0)

Looking rather vulnerable without Tony Pike, with WVU and Pitt still to come.

8 – Oregon (7-1)

Had they not lost to the Broncos, I'd have 'em number one.

9 – Georgia Tech (8-1)

The triple option with top flight recruits. This ain't Navy or Air Force, people.

10 – Louisiana State (7-1)

I'd love to see them beast 'Bama, then UF in the title game, while someone upsets Texas. Come on, chaos!

11 – Pittsburgh (7-1)

They looked awesome against a USF team that subsequently handled West Virginia with relative ease.

12 – Houston (7-1)

That loss to UTEP seems less inconceivable now, as the Miners have also beaten high-powered Tulsa.

13 – Miami, Florida (6-2)

Got through the trap game with Wake Forest.

14 – Penn State (8-1)

Still haven't beaten anyone ... but still have lost only to Iowa.

15 – Southern California (6-2)

I'd called for at least three losses. Looks like I'm gonna be correct.

16 – Utah (7-1)

Their season, with TCU and BYU still to come, could go either way.

17 – South Florida (6-2)

They seem to own the Mountaineers. Suddenly the game with Rutgers, who seems to own them, looms large.

18 – Brigham Young (6-2)

Still have a shot at Utah ... and beating them always makes a Cougar's cockles warm.

19 – Oklahoma State (6-2)

Crushed the 'Pokes fans' dreams again—as we all expected. And you just know that OU's gonna beat 'em, too.

20 – Ohio State (7-2)

The nightmare scenario: A 10-2 Ohio State gets the BCS nod over an 11-1 Iowa.

21 – Notre Dame (6-2)

The rest of their games are winnable. It's looking like BCS or Gator Bowl for the Irish.

22 – Arizona (5-2)

Perhaps they'll pin loss number three on USC.

23 – Oklahoma (5-3)

Clearly the best three-loss team in the country.

24 – California (6-2)

They'll hang around, of course, now that it's too late for them, now that it's too late to do anything meaningful.

25 – Rutgers (6-2)

Normally Saturday's victory wouldn't have been nearly enough (as I mentioned previously) ... but pulling out a win at UConn under those excruciating circumstances is an intangible I can't ignore. Tom Savage came of age as a gunslinger in the wrong town, and Tim Brown, who lived two houses down from Jasper "Jazz" Howard growing up, may have been the only person with enough karmic capital to beat the Huskies at home yesterday. My condolences to UConn, and congratulations to the Scarlet Knights, who make their first appearance in the Top Twenty-Five this year.

As punishment for Brandon Spikes' attempt to gouge out the eyes of a Georgia player, Florida's Urban Meyer has laid the disciplinary smack down, and suspended his superstar for thirty whole minutes against national power Vanderbilt.

And this is almost certainly one of those guys, who, if asked, would assert that he is not only a coach, but An Educator—someone helping these kids (and they are kids) learn life lessons. Way to mentor, there, dude.

Brand(on), Spike(s), Gouge ... whatever, eh, Urban?

Yeah, thats a really weak punishment. Apparently that sort of behavior is okay in Urban Meyer's world. He's helping Spikes more than hurting him, since keeping him out of that half game is just reducing Spikes' odds of injury.

Congrats to Mallory. If Cal couldn't go to the Rose Bowl, I always hope that Oregon does. Good luck on the rest of the season!

Thanks! The only game left the makes me nervous is the Civil War game vs. Oregon State. You can forget about rankings and records when that one rolls around.

Uhhh... not trying to be sarcastic here, but things right now are surprising the heck outta me in that Stanford/Oregon game.
31-14 Stanford at halftime?!?! What in the frell is going on?

And today was the day Iowa choked, 17-10 Northwestern. :(

I'm convinced that Vandenberg didn't even practice this week.

He sure didn't look like it, but then that whole offense I thought was more dependent on the RB as opposed to Stanzi. It's hard to think that Northwestern's D shut them down like that. But maybe they're an extension of their coach, Fitzgerald.

ETA: And Navy beats Notre Dame?!?! That had never happened before Weis got there, and now it's happened twice!!!

And OSU smacks Penn St in a game that still makes me wince.

This Baa/LSU game is interesting. Julio Jones looked like he had rocket sleds for shoes on that touchdown a minute ago. Kudos to the official who picked up the flag after throwing it for pass interference. After all the infamy the SEC refs have received lately - most of it deserved - that was a good thign to see.

At this point, Charlie Weis has to seriously consider seppuku.

And that Oregon loss to Stanford really hurts Boise's BCS chances, especially if Texas Christian runs the table. I like the Broncos, but they only managed 19 points on the blue turf against a team on which the Cardinal hung half a hundred. In short, beating the Ducks just doesn't mean as much as it did five hours ago.

Well, the Ducks I both know and love reappeared today. The team that can't look prosperity in the face for too long (like more than a week). My hat's off to Stanford though, Harbaugh is really doing a good job with them.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!

Well, at least our defense is back in form....

USC is 7-2 after playing 6 games on the road. It will be nice to get back to Los Angeles.

That Stanford game could be quite interesting....

I hope USC and Arizona win out, since I have tickets for that game December 5th.

:techman:

Went to the Georgia/Tennessee Tech game today. It was like watching the Falcons play a middle school. They scored a bunch in the first half and then just ran the clock out in the last half.

Oklahoma still sucks. Take them off the polls for good, please. Thanks.

Shades of Stanford/USC 2007. Looking forward to that. ;)

1 – Florida (9-0)

Holding serve was more than enough this week.

2 – Texas (9-0)

Everyone seems to be talking about UT perhaps being the nation's best. Arguably, they're not the best team in Texas, let alone the country.

3 – Alabama (9-0)

Yet again, one of the SEC undefeateds is the beneficiary of some highly questionable officiating. Either their referees are incompetent, or they've been instructed to subtly influence the games.

4 – Texas Christian (9-0)

Probably the best defense in the country, and now they can move the ball, too. Frankly, I'd like them against any of the top three ... but they still need a win over Utah for further validation.

5 – Cincinnati (9-0)

The Bearcats should have lost. Man, UConn just can't catch a break.

6 – Georgia Tech (9-1)

They have a few nice wins, and their only loss, to Miami, is quite respectable.

7 – Boise State (9-0)

Amazing how a past opponent's performance can impact your ranking, eh?

8 – Houston (8-1)

Still winning ... and still in the mix for best team in Texas, as well.

9 – Pittsburgh (8-1)

If they maintain their poise, I like them to beat the Bearcats.

10 – Miami, Florida (7-2)

In my opinion, a 10-2 Miami deserves a BCS bid over an unbeaten Boise State.

11 – Louisiana State (7-2)

They got dicked by the refs. That was clearly an interception. How convenient for 'Bama that the call on the field said otherwise, eh?

12 – Iowa (9-1)

The big question now: Will Iowa finish in the Top 25?

13 – Oregon (7-2)

Still incredibly dangerous; still apt to disintegrate defensively at a moment's notice.

14 – Southern California (7-2)

Speaking of disintegrating defenses ...

15 – Ohio State (8-2)

They're dogged, I'll give 'em that.

16 – Utah (8-1)

Their big chances are coming.

17 – South Florida (6-2)

USF vs. Miami looks to be a good one.

18 – Brigham Young (7-2)

Not sure how they lost at home to Florida State.

19 – Arizona (6-2)

Don't look now, but ... they control their own destiny in the Pac-10.

20 – Penn State (8-2)

This year, they've proven a quintessential pretender.

21 – Oklahoma State (7-2)

Every year, they prove a quintessential pretender.

22 – Auburn (7-3)

I absolutely think they can beat the Tide in the Iron Bowl.

23 – West Virginia (7-2)

Their season could go either way, with Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Rutgers still to come. I can't stand the Mountaineers, and would love to see them finish 7-5.

24 – Wisconsin (7-2)

Another solid UW team that can't possibly win anything meaningful.

25 – Rutgers (6-2)

We'll learn a lot Thursday night when they host USF.

Well, this wouldn't be that big of an upset, but certainly USC could lose this game. Especially with practically every offensive starter injured.

Harbaugh has done a nice job down there. The Pac Ten is pretty competitive, don't let anyone tell you different.
