The 82nd Academy Awards & STAR TREK

Not nominating one of the best movies of the decade - "The Dark Knight" for Best Picture was a shameless and entirely appalling move by the Academy, IMHO.
Especially considering the fact that they made an exception back in '04 with "Return of the King," IMO the weakest part of the trilogy (TTT would have deserved it, though).

But for me, the Academy lost all credibility with robbing "Brokeback Mountain" and giving Best Picture to the utterly forgettable "Crash." I mean, even the most conservative homophobe should concede that Ang Lee made a f***ing classic!

STar Trek is just not an "Academy Award" kind of film. Those films usually have Meryl Streep in it crying.

Or committing suicide. I remember as we left Sophie's Choice, my date commented, "Well, that was not a real toe-tapper."

What exception did they make for ROTK?

Also, I completely agree with you on Brokeback Mountain vs. Crash.

I hope either "District 9" or "Inglourious Basterds" snags it. Or "Avatar" if it's anywhere near as good as "District 9." It would be nice to see a science fiction movie win something, but not "Star Trek." There have been much better Star Trek movies before that have been snubbed in the past, so giving this mindless action flick anything outside of VFX would be kind of appalling in my opinion.

ROTK being the first and only fantasy film in history to win 'Best Picture'...

Interestingly, all three LOTR movies were nominated for best pic, but only two sci-fi films in history had that privilege ("Star Wars" and "E.T."), so I wouldn't hold much hope for "Star Trek."

I think it'd have a very excellent shot at Best Visual Effects and Best Score if nothing else. But that'd be two more Oscars than TREK films usually get.

  • Visual effects - a nomination is a safe bet, but Avatar will probably claim it
  • Art direction - good chance for that
  • Makeup - also a safe bet, might even be a favorite to win
  • Best Sound and Sound editing - these two are a no-brainer, IMO
  • Film Editing - it was pretty good
  • Best Score - music was far from brilliant, but far worse scores have been known to win it
  • Actor in a supporting role - If they could have given it to Jennifer Hudson, then they could at least nominate Bruce Greenwood, but I wouldn't hold out much hope

Actually I was reading that instead of 5 now 10 films will be nominated for best picture, so I think when you look at the selection of movies this year, Trek should be nominated, but it will never win. Because it simply isn't the best movie of the year to the non-fan.
But there is no arguing that it is in the top 10 movies for 2009 by every standard there is.

^Actually there is. ;) Maybe VFX, makeup, and/or score, but even there "District 9" had some really good VFX and makeup too, as have some other movies this year.

Even with the Best Picture nominees expanded to 10, I don't expect Star Trek to make it. For one thing, it's been a pretty strong year for movies in general, and while Star Trek has been nearly universally praised, that means that most people liked it, as opposed to nearly everyone LOVING it. Every critical review I've read has given the film above average, rather than as a superior film. It's a film that most people can agree to like, but disagree as to how much they like it.
