The 82nd Academy Awards & STAR TREK

Costume Designers Guild announced their nominations and Star Trek was nominated in the Best Fantasy Costume category.

Fantasy

  • Avatar (Mayes C. Rubeo, Deborah Lynn Scott)
  • The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (Monique Prudhomme)
  • Star Trek (Michael Kaplan)

My money is on the The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Same here. TREK had awesome costumes, but hardly original since they were generally and for a large part throwbacks and homages to classic TOS costumes sewn and made over forty years ago. And AVATAR is largely CGI so the actual costumes worn by live actors aren't exactly the most cutting edge ideas.

Lessee, we also had the Vulcan costumes and the Romulan costumes. What else...the Kelvin costumes...

Not many variations, really. The movie focused about 99% of its costuming energy on humans, Vulcans and Nero's crew. Aside from the leisure wear a few background aliens at the Iowa bar wore I can't think of anything else.

We're about 6 1/2 hours away from nominations. Interestingly enough, Star Trek is seen more as an alternate/dark horse for a nomination now. Seems like District 9 has stolen a lot of buzz. We'll see though.

No best picture for Star Trek? Not surprising, it wasn't nearly as good as District 9 or as ground breaking as Avatar.

Groundbreaking as AVATAR? No. 100% agreed there.

"Better" than DISTRICT 9? No. I enjoyed TREK a lot more in many respects...DISTRICT 9 more in a few others. They more or less balanced each other out in my eyes and while I think the latter film had a far, far more valid social message to speak about(which is 98 or 99% of why I think it got the Picture nod)it was not as fun or entertaining to watch as TREK in many regards. It is kind of a wash when I watch both. I gave both similar ratings after multiple viewings of each.

I have to keep reminding myself that the ceremony is THIS coming Sunday. It's already March and spring is just around the bend...after this long and harsh winter it's hard to remember that we're already in the third month of 2010 even if it doesn't really seem it. Thanks for the reminder!:techman:

In case you guys need any more enticement to watch, keep in mind that barring a huge surprise, "Star Trek" will be the first film of the franchise to win an Academy Award. Even if it's just for Makeup, it's still really exciting to think that "Star Trek" will be called out for the first time.

Wonder what film will walk away with a lot of oscars

"Hurt Locker" will probably win at least 3 (Picture, Director, Editing), and could also win Best Original Screenplay, Sound Editing, and Cinematography.

"Avatar" will win at least 3 (Visual Effects, Art Direction, Sound Mixing), and could also win Sound Editing and Cinematography.
